2009 Dodge Challenger Could Start at $23,995...Is It Worth It?

09_challenger_blue_se.jpg
The 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 starts at $40K when you factor in the gas guzzling tax. That's a little too high for most of us, so for the 2009 model year there will be lesser powered Challengers with a much lower price tag.

According to an un-named Chysler exec the 2009 V6 powered Challenger is going to start at $23,995. Chrysler has yet to officially release the pricing for the 2009 Challengers, although it is expected that the base Challenger will start south of $25K. If it does indeed start at $23,995, the Challenger starts at about $4k more than the Challenger's closest competitor, the Ford Mustang.

Is the Challenger worth the extra $4K over the Mustang? This gap could close when Ford releases the new 2010 Mustang, but not probably by much.

Vlad:

NOPE!

Sphere:

The 300 starts at less. I'd expect the cheap coupe to start even cheaper...23k is too much.

The only respectable version is the v8, but if it's worth 4-6 grand more than a Mustang I'm not sure. Foot brake?

Turkle:

The cold hard reality of these price points will cut a swath through all the hype surrounding this car and drive down the demand in about 2 years. You are not getting anything unique for the extra money over a 300. One of the major arguments made by people going Ga-Ga over this car is that it looks like nothing else on the road. THANK GOD! for that brother! I am glad that there will not be too many of these ugly hunks of second rate, half-baked, squint and I can almost see the original crappy design coming through, attempt at "original" design this Dodge "Challenged" car really is. It is funny how so many enthusiast are laughing at the Chinese for copying other manufacturers, but we gladly line up to buy such blatant unoriginality, design wise from Ford, Chevy, and Dodge.

bc:

Yes, if you want to drive a crappy car...

John:

Man that interior looks cheap for something that begins at 23k. Its like gm just recycles the same junk dash on every car. Nothing new but even with the 40k version the dash will still look horrible what are they thinking.

Paranoyd:

Looks like a dash made and designed in the 80's.
There's such a thing as trying to be tooo retro.
Old lookin' = look very cheap (to look at and probably to make).

Cheap Car Lover:

Good thing in a year or two they'll all come with *a pile of cash* on the hood incentivising you to buy them. 23k is too much for a 6 cylinder car like this, espcially the garbage 6 cylinder they put in these.

I'd planned on buying the RT once it wasn't *cool* anymore, but without a handbrake they can forget about it. That's completely ridiculous.

Jake:

Four pedals including the parking brake? Isn't that getting a little crowded?

I HATE the steering wheels on Chrysler products, that there is enough to keep me from getting one. There is nothing sporting about a large plastic brick in front of you. Look at an RX-8, that is how a sports car's steering wheel should look, airbag and all.

Noya:

$24k, you can pick up a nearly new Mustang GT for that.

WVO:

I owned a 1971 Road Runner. It ran like the wind. I first saw this Challenger and loved it. At first. Looks aren't everything. Then came the $40k price tag ( I could probably get a used Cessina for $25k). Then came this 6 cylinder option for still more than a Mustang GT. The interior, looks like spare parts from a Ram van. This isn't the same company that produced those muscle cars in the 70s. They came out with 'new' technology back then, the Hemi. Why couldn't this company come out with 'new ' technology with this one? Like a diesel/electric hybrid drivetrain.

WS:

Interesting that the new Challenger is likely to follow the same fate as its predecessor. The original Challenger was introduced just ahead of the first major fuel crisis, and was subsequently killed by it. I think the same thing will happen with this one, though the V6 version will likely survive for a while.

I think 23K is probably as reasonable starting point, but you won't see one for less that 30K at the dealer...they will mark it up almost to the point of choking off demand.

Dan:

@ Jake:

I agree, the e-brake should be center handle pull style in the console, like a corvette or most other manual tranny cars (S2K, 350Z, RX8, etc).

Allen:

I knew the SRT8 would do well, but the standard model, nah. Its target market is smaller than ever. The Mustang appeals to women heavily, but men looking for "manly" cars are not the numbers they were in the 60s, and with so many things on their minds today, most early twenties men (the people who would make this their first new car purchase) need something with better mileage and more utility than a 4200lb car-of-questionable-style. Its going to sell well with the redneck crowd, don't get me wrong, but they alone cannot push this car to 100,000 units.

And Chrysler desperately needs 100,000 units on a new car right now.

Rich:

Chrysler's products all look the same on the inside. Like a pickup truck covered in hard plastic. $23K for this? Maybe in pesos.

J-:

hey john .......u r a dumbass.
GM doesn't makes dodge.
....i know the car looks horrible, but chevy doesn't produce it

Joan of Arc:

Holy crap. That interior is just... horrific!

The Mustang has a pretty decent interior, especially compared to this. That is just pathetic.

Hopefully that isn't the actual interior. Seriously..

i have a 2006 mitsubishi galant.....mitsubishi is the same company as dodge.
why the galant interior looks better than the challenger.

Tim:

Great car, beautifull, but it needed to be out 3 years ago and 1500-2000 lbs lighter to be a major contender.

Zack:

Yeah..the interior is just....

The exterior is awesome, but I'm not driving from the hood. I....I'm going to be waiting for the 2010 Mustang, kinda sad to say it. But if the interior is shit, I'm not going to buy it.

Dennis:

I owned a 1970 Challenger and loved it, but I like the 2009 even more. I like the retro styling inside and out - except that I think th interior is great looking - but the exterior needs some chrome or striping - something other than the monochrome look it has. Also, I've driven the retro mustang (2006 V6) and if you want a plastic plain ugly interior - look there. If you don't upgrade it, you get plain black everything. I agree that Dodge is going to kill this because the gas mileage vs performance isn't in line with today's realities but for those of us that do like the 2009 Challenger, it's our one last chance to own one of Dodge's best looking cars. The R/T with automatic has cylinder deactivation to improve gas mileage - and it does pretty well on the highway - matching the V6's mpg. I think that model (29,999.99 from Dodge.com) is going to be the most popular of the 3. The SRT8 is going to be sought be those for whom the price of gas still doesn't matter. The V6 will do well only if it can move the car with decent accelleration - and it could - my last Ford Explorer (2005 model XLT) was a 4.0 liter V6 and that SUV weighed just over 4900 pounds.
Let's hope there's a hybrid or all electric high performance version in the works so these don't disappear after 5 years like the originals did.
How many of you like the 2010 Mustang redesign? I don't like it as well as the 2005-2009. I've seen enough photos of the new Camaro to be sure in my mind it's gonna be the white elephant of the 3 muscle car brands. The animations of it looked absolutely hot but the real thing is plain jane outside.

Has anyone considered that the Government itself may be the reason for the continued high gas prices? Think about it - keeping them this high has finally started a revolution towards smaller cars and hybrids. Remember the Honda Insight - cute little 2 door hybrid that started hybrids? Discontinued because of poor sales. If they brought it back now - I bet they couldn't make enough of them.

Please hold the boo's from the other side - this are just my opinions and I know everyone follows their own beliefs - as they should.
