Hyundai unveiled the all-new rear-wheel-drive Genesis coupe at the New York Auto Show last month. It was rumored that the new coupe would eventually replace the Tiburon in the lineup, although Hyundai execs eventually said it would not. Well John Krafcik, Vice President of product development for Hyundai recently told the Automotive News that the this is going to be the last year for the Tiburon.
Krafcik is insistent that the Genesis coupe is not a replacement for the Tiburon. "We are seriously looking at a small front-wheel-drive coupe to replace the Tiburon," Krafcik told the Automotive News. Krafcik did not reveal a time frame. At the LA Auto Show, Hyundai execs revealed that they are looking at the Veloster concept as inspiration for the replacement for the next Tiburon.

Big loss, I just feel sorry for the douches who bought one of these piles.
Back when this body style came out (2002-2003?), the dealer I worked for also had a Hyundai lot. I drove it, and while it was okay, it wasn't near the quality of the RSX or Celica.

For some reason, I'm not feeling too sad about it as well although I like the TIburon. The Tiburon was a good deal for its price and lots of standard options but it went wrong in two ways:
(1) The redesign of the front look from year '07-08.
(2) The lack of progress in engine power. Hyundai should've increased the power output of both the i4 and the V6. The i4 could've used a factory turbo without increasing the price too much if they really wanted to.
It seems Hyundai spruced up their Sante Fe's, Sonata's, and Elantra, but got lazy with the Tiburon.
Bring on the Genesis Coupe and let the old Tibby rest in peace until Hyundai can make it better.

While I disagree with the ugly comment, it is time for the Tiburon to go. I wonder if this means the Kia concept we saw has a better chance of tipping up...

I won't be sad to see the Tiburon go, its was underpowered, overpriced and ugly. Bring on a new model.

I don't know why Hyundai took a dump on the Tiburon. It showed a lot of promise with the 2003 model, but after a couple of years they started to put this car on the back burner. The tiburon would have been a great car to this day if Hyundai would have continued to put it as their flagship sports car and gave it the same treatment as all their other cars.

My girlfriend picked up a V6 Tiburon, the 06 model just as the 07's were coming on the lot. She got it for $15 grand which included a modest number of options to boot. I think the dealer was trying to clear out the 06's.
Although not the greatest car, the price couldn't be beat and it looks good in black. My GF loves it and she spent less money on a new car then she was expecting.
My only real complaint with the Tiburon is that if you are tall don't plan on siting in the back seat.
Anyways, the Tiburon is a decent, reliable, and inexpensive coupe.

The new model based on the "BK" platform will be known as "The Whopper" and will have flames on the sides.

Good riddance to the Tiburon. When the first model was introduced, the factory claimed that the body was designed to appear like tight, lean muscles. Unfortunately it came out looking more like a severe case of cellulite. Instead of clay models, they must have been using plastic bags full of cold oatmeal to design this thing.
The current version looks much better, but it's too late. The damage has been done. Tiburon is Spanish for "shark," not guppy. Slow, fat and ugly is no way to go through life as a car.

I had an 04 tib 4 cyl for a few years and while the level of refinement was below your acuras and toyotas of course, it was a pretty decent car. The thing we have to keep in mind is Hyundai has only been making cars for America for a little over 15 years, and they really only got serious about making a good product 6 or 7 years ago. Look at where honda or toyota was after 6 or 7 years in America and compare it to where hyundai is. They are way ahead of the curve. The quality of the vehicles is actually pretty good, it's just a level of refinement that is about 5 years behind the japanese competition. I don't know about you, but I'm not rich, so if I have 2 choices being 1. buy a 5 year old toyota for 15,000 or 2. buy a new hyundai for 15,000 with the warranty, and the same level of refinement as the 5 year old toyota, I'll take the hyundai
