2008 Honda Accord Was the Best Selling Vehicle in the US Last Month...Surprised?

2008honda_accord_white.jpg
Honda released the all-new 2008 Honda Accord last September and it seems like most people, well at least people that make comments on here, said the car was ugly. Well it looks like the US buying public has spoken and the new Accord was not only the best selling car in the US last month, but the best selling vehicle.

Yes, that means that the Accord outsold the best-selling Camry and Ford's F-Series pickups, which have been the best selling vehicles in the US for years. Due to the high gas prices, consumers no longer want large gas-guzzling trucks, which explains the decline in Ford's sales. GM and Toyota are also having problems selling their own full size trucks, so it is not a surprise to see the F-Series lose its crown. The big surprise is that the Accord is outselling the Camry, which has been the best-selling car in the US since the late 90's (it lost the title one year to the Accord in 2002). Last month, Honda sold 36,161 Accords, while Ford only sold 34,996 F-Series trucks and Toyota only sold 31,310. In addition to Accord outselling the Camry in March, it also outsold it in the first quarter of this year.

Is anyone surprised? Most people also said the new CR-V was ugly when it was redesigned for 2007, but it surprisingly is now the best-selling SUV in the US.

Gary:

I'm still not a huge fan but it did look much better in person than it does in pictures. A little less bulky than the Camry with similar features and powertrain...

Jung:

Well, the four door is ugly, but the car is a great package. It seems like the front and back were designed by different groups.

SteelCity1981:

I was one of the few people on here that didn't think this car was ugly and it would sell well, but i didn't expect it to sell this well to be the top auto in america in sales so far.

Alex Greene:

I agree that the car looks rather bland, but that's not what attracts a typical Honda customer. I'm not that much surprised with the sales figures.

Sphere:

It's ugly. What if it sells? The Focus and the Corolla also sell a lot, and they are not exactly good looking.

I think most buyers reservations about the styling (last generation was really bad IMHO) melt away when they see it in person and get inside and feel how comfortable the interior is. After a test drive, the competence of the handling and performance of the powertrains seals the deal. I bought one hook line and sinker last October. Having that much comfort and MPG is something people forgot about when gas was cheap and SUVs were the rage.
WTG Honda.

Noya:

I'm with Gary, this is easily the BEST looking sedan in the $19-28k category.

I was also one of the many who said it was hideous, and that Honda would be refreshing the style withing a year due to poor sales...I was wrong of course. Honda is one of the smartest companies around.

I've only seen a handful of these in person, the first in my rearview mirror...I didn't know what it was. I was thinking, "WTF is that?!" because it looked so mean and aggressive. Then I realized it was the new Accord...but I couldn't tell if it was the coupe or the sedan. So I switched lanes and let it pass, and it was the SEDAN!.

It's really a much better looking car is person. I've since then stopped by the local Honda dealer and checked it out in person; very nice, the best in it's segment from styling, interior, materials, etc.

SlowandMellow:

Well it is ugly, and I have yet to see to one on the road; I have been in several US cities.

Ed:

I use to think the sedan was ugly after the first pictures were release, but it has really grown on me. It definitely looks much better in person.

Jason:

I thought it looked nice but was overpriced. Looks like people are buying cars instead of paying their mortgages...

jettto:

the car is UGLY, the CAMRY 2007-2008 is so much nicer better designed....(exterior)

but i must admint... the engine and the interior is great...!

but none of these 2 can beat the mazda 6... !

Cheap Car Lover:

It's too big. Someone at work got one a few months ago, the thing is enormous. But, by and large, Americans are enormous. No wonder we have such huge cars.

Everyone posting on this site is generally wrong about most things. So I'm not surprised at all.

I didn't use this site back in September.

winer:

Beauty is on the inside - good powertrain, good engine, decent ergonomics. People ARE voting with their wallets.

Regarding the size - the only real concern for suburban population is mpg, not the size.

bc:

Meanwhile, Detroit releases a new 800 hp motor for its next generation corvette...

Terence :

This still looks better than the CR-V... Honda/Acura needs to stop with the weird designs.

lowest iq:

let's wait for next months figures, or lets say, until Toyota has cleared its trucks.

The white car probably belongs to AVIS.

John:

I love my 07 Camry, but I really do like what Honda did with the Accord. Better looking than the previous model.

JerryL:

One reason I've consistantly chosen the Camry/Corolla over the Accord/Civic in the past has been the interior styling (which felt overly spartain in the Hondas). With the most recent body-style changes, Honda has drasticly (to my taste) improved.

I find the Hondas now to be at least as esteticly appealing as Toyota... so the criteria to choos from (estetics and value being similar) change to performance (MPG), performance (handling) and performance (engine/drivetrain).

Of those, the Toyota line wins only in MPG. Add to this that Prius sales likely take a bigger chunk out of Camry than Accord (more likely to change car than car and manufacturer), and that the Accord revision is more recent, and I'm nut surprised at all about the numbers.

Cheap Car Lover:

@ JerryL

Asthetic

Gabe:

After seeing both in person I think the sedan does not look that bad but the coupe is not attactive. The rear end just looks wierd but the sedan is an alright looking car compaired to the competition.

JerryL:

@Cheap Car Lover

Yea, next time I need to check the dictionary rather than take a wild guess at spelling :)

Billy Bob:

I like how the coupe look and the sedan look from the front to the side only, and doesn't the 4 door, looking it from the side, look like the current Mercedes C class? But, I have to agree with many that the back look ugly. Well for the new Mazda 6, the front is hideous that's about it, and for the new Nissan Maxima...what the hell was Nissan thinking???? They sure down shifted from "Shift 2.0" to Shift -2.0.

Haha:

9/10 people on this site think everything is ugly!

Dennisil:

the numbers dont lie (unless your george w bush, then anythings up for grabs.) this car has a nice drive

GRIZZ:

People are always saying the cars are ugly here. I think the coupe is great myself and the sedan is what America wants, a sharp conservative dependable vehicle. Its not going to turn heads, but its pleasant. Toyota is having quality troubles compared to their past track record, plus they really are making ugly cars, so people are going back to Honda, the paragons of slightly boring consistency.

prabalg:

It might be selling, but there's no denying that it is ugly! But, beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder, so who am I to complain!

All said and done, Honda makes great cars, but their recent models are just ugly. As a matter of fact, most of the current Japanese cars have gone that way.

LuvMy05Benz:

Don't worry guys, it's still ugly. They only sold 36,161 because I have cursed it's unholy ugliness and opted out. Coulda been 36,162.

I cringe everytime I see one on the road. That must have happened to me like 36 thousand times in the last four weeks.

9/10 people on here would agree with me.

Optimummind:

This new generation Accord is not ugly. It's a handsome, sharp, sleek, slick, and good-looking car for a family sedan. I like both the sedan and coupe designs, which was a surprise for me because traditionally, the Honda Accord sedans always looked worse than the coupes. It does look kind of similar to the earlier-redesigned Hyundai Sonata but it looks like a more expensive car (which it is).

If I didn't like my current car's design so much and tinkering with it and I was in the market for a family sedan, I would definitely choose the new Accord over the Camry, Malibu, and Sonata.

DrFruit:

(My English dictionary says Aesthetic.)

I was surprised at how good a Civic Hybrid looks in person, much better (or should I say, less ugly) than on any pic I have seen.
I wonder how they do that.

Darmok:

This just proves the power of Consumer Reports. People buying Accords don't care what they look like, it's an appliance. They care about the style of a car about as much as I care about the style of my washer and dryer.

Donnie Anderson:

I've always owned a Chev. I've always had major problems. Point being, GM lacks quality. Same goes for Ford, Chrysler...get my point.

My last vehicle was a loaded $35,000 Ford Ranger which was a real beauty but sucked down gas faster than Iraq can produce it. And it was obviously a cheaper truck, fit & finish wise, no matter how nice it looked. So when the lease was up a few weeks ago I went car shopping. I looked at everything but North American. Mazda, Nissan, VW, Hyundai, Toyota, Subary, Honda, Mini, etc... I tried every manufacturer and every model.

In the end I came to several conclusions. I still love Subaru but the financing and MPG kept me away from the Impreza I wanted. Mazda's are damn nicely styled but their quality lacks. Hyundai seems to give a lot for your $$$ but internet searches turned up many negative experiences with Hyundai in total.

I was down to 2 cars, The Corolla and the Civic. The new 2009 Corolla Sport has the body kit and tries to look like everything else out there like the Altima, Mazda 3, etc... The Civic is original. You see it and you know it's a Civic. it has that space ship look to it. After the test drives the Civic had more power, was smoother over the bumps, was roomier inside, had less blind spots, and I love the digital speedometer. As for MPG they are equal.

I also eyed the new Accord while Civic shopping. They had a 2 door red one in the show room with black leather interior. Very nice. Almost has a Nissan Maxima look to it. I love it. It's big and aggressive. It better be for the price cause it sure ain't no Civic. I think it's a wonderful car and the new designs Honda are coming out with are spectacular. May look a little funny at first but once you own one it's amazing. The little details are amazing.

I think Toyota's quality is slipping a bit while Honda's is only improving. I'd give the advantage to Honda, and the numbers are proving that.

On a side note, the service I received from Honda is spectacular and unlike anything I've received from Ford or GM in the past.

As for the CR-V I think it's very nice. I was looking at a few at the dealer and was impressed with how nice they are. The Element too is very nice. Element is more utilitarian like a JEEP minus the off road part. The CR-V is more refined and luxurious for the soccer mom who needs and SUV for groceries cause the Mini Van isn't cool.

Tim:

Has anyone considered that the people who bought these are the ones that must be the first on their block to have one. Once those types of buyers are gone then what happens to the sales?

Alex:

I saw a 2dr today, was really surprised (in a good way) that it was an accord. I say thumbs up to the coupe, not so much to the 4dr. (Though I really dont like 4drs, except subarus, they pulled it off)
@ Tim. Who has to have the first Accord? I mean, come on, its a Honda Accord. I could see this with a Mustang/Camaro/Prius (yeah) where its a symbol kinda thing, but an Accord, get real. I think this thing is having genuine success.

Subpra:

My head snaps around everytime one of these drives past me. I guess I think it is a nice looking car because it gets my attention and I don't feel bad after.

I think Honda has a winner here, but then again one usually can't go wrong buying a Honda.

Sphere:

I've seen the new Accord in person, the coupe and the sedan. The Sedan is indeed ugly, I can't help it, that's my opinion. The coupe is better, but then again, IMHO, the Nissan Altima Coupe looks great, really looks much more expensive and refined.

Allen:

The thing is that last years transmission and engine problems, however much resolved this year, still plague the Camry in the minds of the moronic consumers: those who do barely any research and just stick with something based on brands. And Toyota has been doing some strange stuff recently: its Lexus brand doesn't really seem to relevant to me anymore, even though its still quite good. And the Toyota brand itself I think is starting to shed its enviromentally friendly image that the Prius endowed, thanks to the new line of pickups and SUVs.

Meanwhile, Honda vehicles are only getting better. The styling isn't revolutionary, but what in the Accords price range looks dramatically better? The Accord also has amazing mileage, low repair bills, low costs of ownership, low downtime in the shop, low insurance rates... all good things in an economy that is pinching people's pennies right now.

And its incredibly comfortable. No matter what trim you buy it doesn't seem like its under equipped or under powered for the money.

I would argue any day of the week that the Hyundai Sonata provides better value, but is the better value always the better car? Can numbers alone always define what a car is? Not always. This is what has propelled the Accord.

Way to go Honda. I welcome many more months of the same dominance if possible.

William:

Do any of you own the 4 door sedan? I do, came from a Dodge Nitro SUV had only 1.5 years. I am very happy with my 4CYL EX-L W / NAV! Got the car Sat, drove 143 miles up to Sunday mostly highway. I still have 2 points above the half tank mark! Take that! The fit & finish inside is very nice for what the car is! Oh, and it's fully loaded to the gills.
Gas prices will continue to rise, I feel sorry for those SUV drivers, even those who are "rich" will start to feel the effects once gas hit's 5 dollars per this summer!

Rich:

@ Donnie Anderson

You dropped $35K on a f**kin Ford Ranger?? Did you get lobotomized before walking into the dealership??

FYI: Ford is now selling an $80,000 Mustang. Better hurry and get yours before they're gone!!

duh.

Dave:

Honda people understand that Hondas are not about the styling so much as the value, performance, and reliability. I have an '06 Accord EX-L (3.0L V-6) and it's awesome. Getting 25+ (combined city/hwy) mpg on the daily drive - which is better than advertised. I thinks it's great for a 243 hp car. Also have an '05 Acura RSX - a nice little economy car with some style and performance.

I used to be a Toyota person - had a few Camry's in the 90's. These were good cars but they had no "soul". Just utilitarian appliances.

To me, the only issue with Honda is their paint. It's too thin, and it scratches and chips far too easily. Other than that, I don't think there is a better car out there for twice the price.

Joe:

I have been a loyal Honda owner since 1970. I have owned more of their motorcycles than I could possibly count. Bought my first Accord in 1986 and drove it 8 years. I had to fight people off when I put it up for sale and sold it for a surprisingly large amount of money.

If nothing else, Honda's resale value makes them desirable and well worth the purchase price. (Just check the classifieds in your local paper and compare used Honda Accord prices to any other cars of the same year and class.) But someone mentioned something about their "soul." This is what sets Honda apart from Toyota, Nissan and Mazda. Mr. Honda was a racing fanatic and had a fascination with small, high RPM engines. The RC149 GP racing motorcycle (1966) had 5 cylinders and displaced a mere 125 ccs. It had a redline north of 20,000 RPM! Yes, it was a four-stroke.

Honda has introduced some remarkable technology, a result of their "pedigree." They build engines with oval pistons that have 8-valve combustion chambers with twin connecting rods. They pioneered the mass production of a trick valvetrain, the overwhelmingly successful VTEC system, that adjusts valve lift and duration at different engine RPM.

Honda's "soul" sets their products apart. "It's the engineering stupid." Honda engines and drivetrains are decendants of Mr. Honda's vision and handiwork. This semi-intangible attribute is what makes Honda products slightly better than Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki, etc.

longdxcommuter:

@Joe:

Overall, I agree with your post. However, I would be remiss not to include Mazda and Nissan (to a lesser extent now) to that list of dependable but sporting vehicles. Mazda's have always been driver centric and it evident in the Mazda 3; their smallest entry in the US market. It sports a sophisticated suspension design and begs the driver to push the limits. (this from the least expensive offering).
