Mazda may be thinking about bringing its well regarded Mazda2 hatchback to the US in the not so distant future.
In addition to the Mazda2, the automaker is also looking into the future of diesels in the US.
“We’re not ready to make the announcement but obviously we sell diesels in Europe,” O’Sullivan said during a lunch with reporters in Detroit. “The Mazda 2 is extremely successful in Europe and Asia. We’re continuing to watch that space in North America.”
Currently Mazda of North America is busy finishing the launch of the CX-9, the revamped Mazda5 and the upcoming launch of the all-new Mazda6.
It will be interesting to see if Mazda does decide to bring the Mazda2 to the US, since Ford is also launching the Fiesta by the end of 2009. The Fiesta is based on the same platform as the Mazda2.

Don't bring this car to America. Its exactly what the public seem to want and this will only create more demand for a class of vehicle no US auto manufacturer can emulate successfully.
We need more V8s and SUVs.

I live in the Americas and there's not a chance in the world I'd be caught in that diminuitive, hideous, cheap POS.
By the way, I drive a small japanese RX7 hatchback that's 20 years old. I've never had a V8, and I still hate this car.

"Saturn Astra."
That car is only an Opel. The only difference is the badge. Really....normally they change at least something, but thats it! And thats a good thing.
If they would bring the TDI to the Astra of the Vectra, I would buy it. Very fun to drive TDI.
I think the guy calling for the v8 was being sarcastic. Perhaps just saying that while 90% of us want it, American car companies will only mess it up and deliver expensive, giant crap boxes.
Although these HUGE suv's are funny and they give you the chance to shout out the window at the driver " USA, USA, USA!!!" or even "RUMSFELD!!!!!!" ;)

with cars like Honda Fit, various Scions and Toyota Yaris, it would be stupid not to challenge Honda and Toyota in these areas.
60s 70s 80s and 90s are over. V8s are overkill and belong into niche markets (gigantor SUVs, sports cars....). As the gas prices rise, we will se even more demand for cheaper running vehicles including diesels. Most people will use these econboxes to commute to work anyway. V8s don't mean crap in a traffic jam.
