Chrysler has just announced that the automaker will shutdown most of its operations in July for 2 weeks.
CEO Bob Nardelli said in a memo that the automaker will take a "two-week mandatory shutdown for the weeks of July 7 and July 14." He went on to say that "As a private company, we need to think like owners and do our part to accelerate Chrysler’s recovery and transformation.”
Chrysler lost $1.6 billion in 2007 and sales in the first two months of this year are down 13 percent.
In addition to shutting down for two weeks, Chrysler is also offering buyouts to 44,000 hourly workers in order to trim costs.
It is normal for automakers to idle plants during the summer as they retool their plants for the upcoming model year changes.

I've had 4 Chyrsler products and they have been the best cars I have owned. They aren't making anything in the economy segment. Not good when gas is heading to 4 or 5 bucks a gallon.

What's the big deal, GM has been having a two week shut down since the 60's and beyond. Its called "Model Change" This not new, it's not even news. Is Chrysler just starting to figure this idea out, if so it explains a lot about them.

It seems like an appropriate action for Chrysler. And if Chevrolet was able to do it many times, then it should not be a big problem for Chrysler. I'm not a big fan of Chrysler, but anyway, I hope they recover. Although, my hopes of recovery are mare for Ford. I am a huge fan of Ford. Unfortunately, I not sure if they can even afford to do the same thing.

So what? If you look at Chrysler's model lineup, it's hard to believe anyone has been working in the design dept. This is not news, but the following link is:

@ jason
Reinvent something like the PT crusier? How is the reinventing something when they basicly tried to clone a modern day version of the Ford roadsters in the 30's?

dennisil, you are an uneducated Idiot, for making the stupid comment you dennisil, you showed us how uneducated you are, while stereotyping tens of thousands of Chrysler workers! Many of us have degrees and other forms of post-high school education! Many were tea chers,hospital-workers, or other highly-skilled professionals. We are here because of pay and ,benefits for us and our families! Why do you assume we need GED training? You need to learn to spell "maybe" and "powered"! Besides, the Hemi is made in Mexico now! Do you think education is why Chrysler lets Jose' or Carlos build it instead of me? The educated Engineers and Executives have presided over the fall of the U.S. Auto Industry! I buy your products, services, and support many communities all over this Country! So, ask Toyota why the Tundra is not selling, and try to figure out why we are in a recession! You Dummy, I hope you cannot pay your mortgage or rent or insurance! When you lose YOUR HOME,maybe BMW, Mercedes,Lexus, or Toyota can give you a job! Have you ever wondered why U.S. Autos are not allowed to take over foreign markets? I guess not; you can't even spell "maybe"!

Frankly Chrysler has betrayed American trust. We bailed them out of bankruptcy only to see the fat cats sell off to the Germans years later. Combine that with an uninspired design team and multiple mechanical issues and you have a car company that I'm no longer interested in. Unions are what's wrong with car manufacturers today anyway. For some reason I'm expected to pay out the arse for inferior engineering and lack of imagination. There are VERY few companies or cars that I would bother to purchase new. I get sick of paying too much for so little. I'm hoping that Chrysler dumps the unions altogether and shuts down for a bit just to reorganize. Perhaps then they can afford to hire people who do a better job at engineering and design and get rid of the high paid button pushers that cause car prices to inflate on a yearly basis. One thing I do admire about the new owners is that they're investors. They don't mind shutting things down if it makes them money in the long run. It's all about getting a return on their investment and right now, that's hard to do with all of the overhead. So Ivan, while you wish ill against someone who's tired of your union crap, why don't you take a step back and ask yourself why everyone perceives the unions as a bunch of money grubbers who have an inflated opinion of themselves? Auto lines have become so computerized that we could pay bananas for monkeys to do what half of the guys do on the lines. You guys make me want to look at cars that are at least 5 years older than current models. I'll continue to buy older cars and refuse to support the auto industry until the auto industry realizes that I don't like grabbing my ankles every time I start car shopping. Buying American shouldn't make me feel like I was held up in a dark alley. I'll continue buying foreign products if they give me a better bargain.
