Hyundai is going to officially unveil the all-new 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe at the New York Auto Show this week, but thanks to quite a few sites the photos are already out there.
Since the official release from Hyundai hasn't happened yet, all that we know is that the coupe is RWD and will come with the option of either a turbocharged 4-cyl or a V6 engine (the V8 from the Genesis sedan is not going to make it into the coupe).
Stay tuned for the official press release and photos from the show this week.

The overall shape is quite nice, but I can't help but feel its been over-designed. The lines on it just seem so "busy". The front and rear lights have their shape dissected unnecessarily - why not make them one continuous shaper? Then the rear 1/4 windows have a bit extra shape added to them with the bit that dips down.

Looks like a 350Z. I'm hoping its priced like a Sonata. I hope it handles better than all there other cars. Now if the Koreans could build a car that performs like a German car, and reliable as a Japanese, and as much power and torque as an American car then Americans will buy.

its a nice looking car although the front bumper isnt that great Its still a very nice looking car. I hope the weight of this thing is less tehn that of a rx8 because if so you will have a monster on your hands.

these guys are really masters at marketing.
For months this website was abuzz about this new V8 coupe that would take one the world.
Then, the V8 was dropped. Now it basically has a 4-pot and V6. Its just a rearwheel drive successor to the coupe.
It will also not take one the world, only some mid prized Nissans/Mitsus/Toyos
A big 'so what'.
Nice car though.

Not a bad looking car with the exception of oddly shaped rear passenger windows.
I'm interested to see what Hyundai can do with the turbo 4, if they can manage to keep the weight down it could be a fun car like the Nissan Silvia.

I have really liked Hyundai's designs lately, including the Genesis sedan. I really don't like this. It looks like an RSX with its pop-top opened. I know it's larger, RWD and all that, not my cup of tea.

Not much the G37...but If this is priced close to the Accord Coupe, Solara or the Nissan Altima coupe...those are the ones in bigger trouble.
I think this RWD car will kill them all...awsome!

I don't think there's much chance of it being lighter than the RX-8 (a 2900 pound car) when Hyundai is comparing it to the Mustang (a 3400 pound car).
There is a chance of it being lighter than the Mustang, but even that is unlikely thanks to new Euro AND US crash safety standards (Pedestrian, and Rear Offset) that I don't think the RX-8 or Mustang have yet been made to comply with.
I hope I'm wrong, but I'm not hopeful.

I think it should compete well with the likes of the 350z, G37, RX8 etc. It's definitely a step above your normal 2dr coupe, even the relatively beefy Altimas. The top model will be pushing 300+hp from the v6, which is very impressive (and about time) considering the lackluster performance from the v6 in the current tiburon. And the 4cyl turbo will probably have the best bang-for-your-buck modding potential. If I don't buy a car before this is released, I'll definitely be taking a look.

Looks damn good. I wouldn't buy one because I am not in the target demographics for this car. Hyundai defiantly on a role pre production. Who knows when they hit the road.
Needs a 300hp V6, and RWD for sure. V8 is too heavy, wasteful and is not needed, and ALL 4 cylinders suck. (even the famed Lotus and WRX)

Looks like the Tiburon's big brother, which isn't a bad thing. All we need now is the info on the turbo 4. The 3.8 V6 is putting out 290hp in the Genesis sedan, maybe they'll get a few more horses out of it for the coupe.

Oh come on, how can THIS get any positive opinions? looks like a retarded Tiburon had sex with an even more retarded Skyline. And no that is not good. They got the proportions right but the details are horrible. I'd rather be seen in a Yugo than this.
What happened to the guy/team responsible for the sedan? Did they just fire them and replace them with three blind men?
I hate to stereotype but Hyundai needs to hire some Italian designers to do their sports cars.
and now if you excuse me I have to go clean the vomit off my carpet.

I think this car will completely beat the overpriced Accord and Altima coupes (at least they are here in Canada, I mean 45K for an accord??? whatever...).
I think it looks nice and like someone said above, it kinda reminds me of the RSX. Who knows what honda was thinking when they replaced their RSX with an SUV... man they are silly...

hyundai was smart to drop the v8 option. if someone wants a v8 rwd coupe then they are probably not too worried about gas prices, which means they have a good amount more $$ than the rest of us. so they are probably not gonna spend it on a hyundai. drop the v8 option = less production costs
i think this car will sell extremely well for a few reasons:
1: its rwd. honestly ive seen many complaints about the amount of fwd cars that come from asia, im amazed more people arent praising hyundai for making this car rwd. the majority of rwd cars to come from asia have been the 350z/g35, miata and expensive lexus models. which brings me to next point.
2: it will be affordable. the turbo 4 model will most likely be thousands less than a g35 with better gas mileage {not that the g35/350z have bad mpg} and im sure the v6 model will be able to compete very well with those cars for much less money.
3. nothing says easy moddability like a turbo4. this car may end up being a hit with the tuner crowd. that combined with its rwd, which may make it a popular drift car, and its low price, will attract the younger market {tuners}

Looks nice. It's got some visual quirks that keep me from drooling over it, but then those make it identifiable too.
Dynamically, who knows? Numbers only tell you so much. But I think Honda, Nissan and Toyota should be paying attention. Hyundai's on the rise.

It's still looking pretty good.
Still not sure about the back-end though... something funny going on there.
If the quality of the final product is even half of what Hyundai is promising they'll probably have a good main-line coupe on their hands. Keeping the final price down will go a long way in drawing customers to an inexpensive RWD ride.
Only two years to wait and see.

I don't have a strong feeling one way or the other about this one. Overall, the exterior looks like a G6 with cheek-bones and a puckered up grill to me.

All in all a very nice car, I like other wish they wouldn't have dropped the V8 as an option though.
If the quality, fit, and finish of this is anything like my Wife's 2006 V6 Sonata then I'll be all over it when it gets released.
For those guessing on Pricing: Hyundai had said before that the would go for around $25K loaded and $19K for base models.

Hyundai's quality is already top-notch... I have an '08 Elantra I got as a family car and their is simply not one thing wrong with it. It's chassis is even 9% stiffer than a Toyota or Honda! That said, this car should do well in the market for sure. It may have love it-hate it looks but a RWD turbo4 couple will certainly be a hit with tuners while the V6 version will be for the more mature driver...

Let's recap, shall we?
Hyundai RWD Genesis coupe:
300hp V6 or 200+hpTurbo4
6sp auto or manual
Nice interior
Analog gauges
Good fit and finish
Good reliability
Keyless entry and pushbutton start
17" wheels or better, with ABS, traction control, etc., etc.
Sleek profile, better than Eclipse IMO
Curb weight <= Mustang
BMW E46 M3 was used as a benchmark
"The unique curve in the rear side windows is meant to increase blind spot visibility"
Price $19-25K
Anyone not curious is 1. dead, 2. female or 3. looking for a minivan.

This car is NOT manly, sorry but I don't even know why you would go there perhaps boyly if there was such a thing. Without the scoot knock-off hood and custom paint this is a sissy car. It kind of reminds me of an anime version of the mid 90's prelude. The sporty version of the concept was intregueing this is not.

I imagine this is going to be a very nice car for the price. Its just like others said though, it doesn't really excite me. If they used the e46 m3 as a benchmark, and they are letting this be known to the public, they have a tall order on their hands... I hope they are able to deliver.

It will be the 4B11T 2.0 L turbocharged, all-aluminum Straight-4 engine that the Mitsubishi Lancer EVO uses. They collaborated on design, and thus both will implement the same engine. There will be slight differences between both cars and both engines, but the basics will be the same. The EVO X is only putting out 300HP as well for the 2008 model year.

While I don't agree with the female point, I do agree with your other points, and I also believe you forgot to mention that these people might also be into driving around town in the couches (we know them as Toyota Camry and/or Honda Accord).
Like most cars, this one is not for everyone, and this thread proves that. What is beautiful for some isn't for others, but one thing is for sure: It looks like Hyundai has a great car in their hands. This might be what they need to prove to everyone that they are serious about performance. Good show...

The 4B11T is a great motor thus far. JNZ Tunning has started the mod process on their new one and it responds very well to bolt-ons. If this IS the 4B11T, this car will sell well to the DSM and EVO crowd.

It is in the same class as the g37, 350z, mustang. etc...Not the accords or altimas. You can't compare fwd with rwd. Engine displacement and power are all close to the 3.5 or 3.7 litres.
Anyhow whatever the case. It's still a Hyundai, I think it would be a great used car. I believe their resale value on their products aren't like Honda's. I'm sure it'll be fun just to rip it up.

so let me get this straight, rumored price is 25k starting, and BMW wants to charge 33k for a 135 that looks 10k cheaper than this thing?
300hp v6, you dont need a V8 anymore, especially when gas is close to hitting $4/gallon or already has in some states
Posted by zzz | March 18, 2008 8:54 AM

@Steven:
Price, size, HP numbers, and body type put it in the same class as all of those cars. The beauty of this car is the fact that it can compete with so many different cars due to it's awesome price/performance ratio. With it's Turbo 4 and sub $20K price it offeres a nice alternative to the Dodge SRT, Cobalt SS, and Civic SI compacts. With the V6 it offers competition to the Altima Coupe, Accord Coupe , 350Z/G35. It's a briliant play on Hyundai's part. Just wait for them to put the V8 or a bigger turbo on the 4 banger to compete with Evo's, Challengers, Camaros, etc... I know many people say a V8 would be wasteful but it should at least be an option to compete against the faster cars out there. If the 4 door can handle the power I'm sure the coupe can too.
FWD, RWD, and AWD can all be compared if they are similarly priced and meant to target the same demographic.
Saying you can't compare FWD & RWD drive cars would eliminate the Acura TL from being compared to the Infiniti G35/37 which is one of it's direct competitors.

If Hyundai is smart they'll make an LSD optional with both engines. Better yet, make it standard.
I don't really think this car looks that great, but it's cheap, reliable, small, and RWD.
The looks do not excite me, but the car still does.
I really hope they kept the weight down...

This thing looks sinister and I'm glad they did not deviate from the basic design. So what if there is no visible carbon fiber or flashy trim, but if you look closely this car looks very much like the press release vehicle. I hope they do offer the V/8 option because I'm willing to pay higher fuel prices for the exaust note and ability to break 400HP. I now own a BMW 540i sprt (V/8), but no longer want 4 doors, therefore don't see the need to carry the extra weight around. What I desire is an M3, but I can't even imagine paying 335ci prices after owning a BMW and seeing first hand how much they tear up. Hyundai builds more reliable vehicles, but until now were not very performance oriented. If this car performs as they & I hope it will and it is just 85% of what BMW offers I'm in....
