2009 VW Passat CC is Going to Start Below $27,000

2009_passat_cc.jpg
Volkswagen officially took the wraps off the 2009 Passat CC at the Detroit Auto Show last month. Now according to CEO of Volkswagen Group of America, Stefan Jacoby, the Passat CC is going to start below $27,000.

This is good news since it was originally rumored that the CC version of the Passat was going to be priced above the regular sedan at $35K. Obviously this is part of VW's plans to increase its sales in the US.

When the Passat CC is released it will be powered by a 2.0L TSI engine that produces 197hp and a 3.6L V6 that produces 276hp. The 3.6L comes standard with 4MOTION all-wheel-drive.

It looks like a nice car. It has a good price. It has VW quality. It should sell very well.

stoned:

I wanna see this in person may get it on lease for my first car. Also I'm 18 and have been driving regularly since 14 so no getting a new car for a first car is stupid comments. Also my mommy and daddy ain't gonna be helping me I got a good job lined up.

I wouldn't mind taking a look at this car, as the fit, finish & interior quality is typically very good.

I know people are going to knock its reliability, but if you like to do your own work, this shouldn't be a setback especially at this price.

I wonder how much the markup is going to be for Canada, or if we'll see this model at all (R32 isn't sold here for example)

Mazda6 Guy:

@Jagaer:

With the way vehicle manufacturers like to rip off Canadian customers, I wouldn't be surprised to see this car very close to the $40K range.

This is a very nice looking car, the outside is nicely sculpted, and the interior while simple, looks very nice, and of very high quality. If VW can keep the reliability in check they should have a winner in their hands.

Kell:

I like it as a commuter sedan overall, and the interior is very nice. It's not really a sports sedan IMO. The rear taillights has a touch of Corolla in them to me. Not a bad thing necessarily, just an impression. With so many designs out there, there seems to be a lot of overlap. I also hope they increased the legroom. I had a previous model as a rental and my knee was against the center console with the seat all the way back.

Dropping the price $8000 was smart, because at $35K it would be competing with the BMW 3 series and other better cars. BMW should learn this lesson and drop the pricing on the 1 series to increase sales.

The last thing is build quality. They need to build this car well and get that bad rep behind them.

Andy:

Looks nice but I wud rather buy a 3.3ltr 268hp Hyundai genesis for $30k, than 2ltr VW crap for 27k which needs a lot of maintenance, and the manufacture quality has slided way below hyundai these days.

longdxcommuter:

The biggest hurdle that VW faces is addressing the dreaded " reliability" issue. Whether this is factual or more preception based, it haunts every potential VW buyer. I recently rented a new VW Passat. It had an incredible interior (great fit and finish), the 2.0T engine, and drove very well. But in the back on my mind, I would question whether I would actually purchase a VW. Whether CR, or JD Power are correct or giving equal weight to potential problems per vehicle, I am not sure. But negative reports from these and other sources have soured my desire to buy a new VW.

o:

arnt you allowed to just buy the car in amereica?

Cheap Car Lover:

It's not vehicle manufacturers that rip of Canadian citizens, it's government import tariffs. When you import a US car to Canada you'd have to pay the same thing, or more.

Cheap Car Lover:

Ohh, and 27k for this car isn't a bad deal. I wonder how much options will add. I don't think it looks all that bad either.

"It's not vehicle manufacturers that rip of Canadian citizens, it's government import tariffs. When you import a US car to Canada you'd have to pay the same thing, or more."

That isn't always the case. Take for instance the Civic, Corolla, and Camry (Solara). All these have assembly plants in Ontario, yet you don't see Canadian customers getting better price on these vehicles than American customers...

Manufacturers use a very simple formula to calculate what they will charge customers, and that is "What the market will bare." That is why you see many of them offering discounts on their cars, they won't lower the sticker price (for resale I presume), but it is pretty much the same thing. That tells me that they can sell the vehicle $5K less than they do here, they just choose not to do it.

I mean, consider this, there is no reason why a Subaru Impreza WRX would cost you $34K+ in Canada when you could buy the same car in the US for $24K. There is no excuse for that!

Gary:

If VW's reliability increases this thing could be a TSX killer. Looks much better anyways.

Turkle:

Mazda6 Guy,

This thing would have to handle the same or better than the TSX to better it in sales. I just don't see that happening. I am not some dyed in the wool Acura fan, I just don't see VW emphasizing sportiness over the visual impact this car is intended to have.

It looks great, and at a price point of $27k (US), it should do fine. I really wonder if this means the end for the Passat though. How will it be differentiated from this car? The more expensive, boxier, poorer handling brother?

guswms1:

As a past and present VW owner (Jetta 87, Passat 02, Toureg 04), the problems occur with the dealerships providing adequate support and maintenance to new (off the assembly line) products.

The maintenance techs are not fully knowledgable of the products and do more harm than good. With a sluggest ecconomy, cost would be a major factor of its success within the states.

Although it was love at first sight, this time, I may listen to my wife and wait until VW work out the bugs (as I should have with the Toureg).
