2009genesis01.jpg
Hyundai is going to officially unveil its new Genesis sedan next week at the Detroit Auto Show.

Hyundai's newest model is based on all-new rear wheel drive architecture and is expected to have the capabilities and features comparable to $60,000 premium sedans at a starting price under $30,000. Hyundai's new "premium sports sedan" will be offered with three engine choices, 3.3L V6 (268HP), 3.8L V6 (290HP) and an all-new 4.6L Tau V8 that puts out an estimated 368 horsepower. The V8 is mated to a six-speed Shiftronic transmission and is capable of reaching 0-60mph in under six seconds. Hyundai has pointed out that the Tau V8 puts out more horsepower and torque than the Lexus GS450, BMW 750i, Audi A8 and Infiniti M45.

In addition to the class rivaling horsepower numbers, Hyundai also installed all of the latest technological features in the Genesis. This includes a state of the art Lexicon audio system, Bluetooth, navigation, backup camera, rain sensing wipers, 8 airbags, electronic parking brake, etc.

Stay tuned for more details from the show next week.

HYUNDAI UNVEILS GENESIS PREMIUM SPORTS SEDAN
Hyundai crafts a rival to $60,000 sports sedans ... with a starting price under $30,000
Rear-wheel drive and high-output V8 engine deliver world-class driving experience

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., January 8, 2008 – Hyundai aims to shatter premium automobile paradigms with the North American International Auto Show introduction of its new flagship, the all-new Genesis sports sedan on January 13. With capabilities and features comparable to $60,000 premium sedans, Genesis will be offered at a starting price under $30,000 when it goes on sale this summer.

Genesis is built on Hyundai's all-new, performance-driven rear-wheel-drive architecture. It offers three powertrains, including 3.3-liter and 3.8-liter V6 engines, and Hyundai's all-new 4.6-liter Tau V8. Tau will produce an estimated 368 horsepower on regular fuel, and lead all its competitors in specific output with 80 horsepower per liter. With technology rivaling more expensive luxury sedans, Genesis showcases features such as XM NavTraffic, Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFLS), Smart Cruise Control, Lexicon® audio systems and electronic active head restraints.

"While Genesis will compete for customers with cars like Chrysler 300 and Pontiac G8, our engineering benchmarks were Mercedes E-Class, Infiniti M, and Lexus GS," said John Krafcik, vice president, product development and strategic planning, Hyundai Motor America. "Genesis provides a potent combination of performance, luxury, and value. We think it has the opportunity to be an extremely disruptive force in the large sedan and near-luxury segments."

Genesis ushers in a new era for Hyundai. Its all-new rear-wheel drive architecture will spawn more products in other segments, as suggested by the Concept Genesis Coupe shown at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November 2007.

NEW PERFORMANCE-DRIVEN REAR-WHEEL-DRIVE ARCHITECTURE

Genesis is built on an all-new rear-wheel-drive architecture, its first application in a U.S. Hyundai model. Genesis boasts a near ideal 53/47 front-to-rear weight distribution for exceptional handling and more refined steering characteristics. The rear-wheel-drive layout allowed engineers to position the car's front wheels farther forward delivering outstanding handling and steering performance. Standard Electronic Stability Control (ESC), the industry's most important new safety technology, further enhances the vehicle's driving confidence. Hyundai leads all popular car brands in the standard application of ESC, with more than 70 percent of 2007 Hyundai sales featuring ESC as standard equipment.

Genesis reduces interior noise levels and improves ride and handling with a stiffer, lighter body structure. The use of high tensile steel in critical areas in the unibody provides Genesis with 12-14 percent higher dynamic torsional rigidity and a lower body structure weight than the BMW 5-series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class – despite having a substantially larger cabin than either of those benchmarks. Hyundai Genesis has more interior volume than Mercedes Benz E-Class and BMW 7-Series.

WORLD-CLASS TAU V8
Headlining the Genesis' performance capabilities is Hyundai's all-new Tau 4.6-liter V8 engine mated to a ZF 6-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC® manual control. The Tau V8 delivers an estimated 368 horsepower to fit the demands of performance-oriented consumers. Unlike many competitors and most premium sedans, it achieves this impressive power output using regular unleaded fuel – further demonstration of Hyundai's commitment to value. This powertrain combination will launch Genesis to 60 miles per hour in less than six seconds. The Tau produces more horsepower and torque than the powerplants found in Lexus GS450, BMW 750i, Audi A8 and Infiniti M45 and has more horsepower per liter than any of its V8 competitors. The Tau engine is built with flexibility for the future. Future Tau variants may offer larger displacement, forced induction options and other technology enhancements.

STRONG LAMBDA V6 PERFORMANCE
Genesis also delivers spirited performance through its two V6 options -- all-aluminum 3.3-liter and 3.8-liter DOHC V6 engines that deliver an estimated 268 horsepower and 233 lb-ft. of torque and an estimated 290 horsepower and 264 lb.-ft. of torque, respectively. To maximize the power spread, the engines utilize Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) on intake and exhaust cam shafts and a new Variable Intake System (VIS) that helps cylinders breathe efficiently at low and high RPM. The better breathing results in outstanding off-the-line acceleration and passing performance, and remarkable fuel efficiency. The V6 engines use an alloy block and cylinder heads for lighter weight and thermal efficiency, and feature timing chains with no scheduled maintenance.

Even with their impressive output, all Genesis engines are also environmentally friendly, with all three achieving Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV) certification levels.

ADVANCED 6-SPEED TRANSMISSIONS
Both Genesis V6 engines use an Aisin 6-speed SHIFTRONIC automatic transmission that features an overdrive lock-up torque converter for improved highway fuel economy. The transmission offers smooth shifts and a wide spread of ratios that ideally suit both engine's characteristics including a tall-overdrive sixth gear for quiet, efficient highway cruising. Drivers can access the SHIFTRONIC® feature by moving the gear selector into a separate gate. Pushing the selector forward or pulling it rearward will shift the transmission up or down sequentially, adding to driver control. A clear LCD readout on the instrument panel shows the gear that's in use.
The Tau V8 Genesis is mated with an enhanced, high-output ZF 6-speed transmission to handle the added horsepower and torque.

INNOVATIVE AND SOPHISTICATED SPORT-TUNED SUSPENSION
Genesis features a suspension design that is among the most sophisticated and refined anywhere, at any price. The front five-link suspension features upper and lower arms linking the front wheels to the chassis. This artfully articulated arrangement creates a virtual king pin axis that dramatically reduces unwanted kickback through the steering wheel as well as improving responsiveness. The five-link independent rear suspension is equally sophisticated, enabling precise suspension geometry for a premium ride and engaging handling prowess. The capabilities of the advanced front and rear-suspension are maximized through Amplitude Selective Dampers (ASD) allowing tuning flexibility at smaller damper displacements. The ASD suspension provides:
-Improved ride comfort with more body / wheel control
-Increase driving comfort without compromised handling
-Optimizes road surface contact
-Technology used in Lexus, BMW and Mercedes-Benz models

PROGRESSIVE DESIGN MIRRORS ATHLETIC CAPABILITY
Genesis' design is a progressive interpretation of the modern rear-wheel drive sports sedan. To match its dynamic capabilities, Genesis combines strong, sculpted forms which integrate precise details, natural materials and innovative lighting to provide a well-crafted, premium design aesthetic.

HIGH-TECH ACCOMMODATIONS AT ACCESSIBLE PRICE POINTS
The new 2009 Genesis is the most advanced Hyundai ever. From its design and spaciousness to its technology and appointments, it delivers a wealth of features and performance befitting flagship European and Asian brands, but delivers them at a much more accessible price point. Starting with its Lexicon state-of-the-art audio system featuring LOGIC 7® technology, Genesis offers an extraordinary combination of technology, premium appointments, and value. Standard is a soft-touch instrument panel with woodgrain accents, Bluetooth® hands-free mobile phone interface, and USB/iPod® auxiliary inputs. A state-of-the-art navigation system with an eight-inch display is available. The navigation unit is accessed by a user-friendly multi-media controller that also controls the radio. Backing out of tight spaces and avoiding mishaps is much easier with the available backup camera that uses the eight-inch display to show the driver a clear view immediately behind the car.

A leather-wrapped dash, door panels, and console lid surround the driver in a luxurious environment, while heated and cooled driver's seat provides optimal driving comfort. An automatic windshield defogger with humidity sensor and rain-sensing wipers allow crystal clear sight lines. No other car in the segment offers an ultraviolet reflective leather steering wheel, which keeps the surface cool to the touch, even in scorching sunlight. Genesis also offers the conveniences of power rear sunshade, automatic electronic parking brake, proximity key and push button starter.

LEXICON® AUDIO SYSTEMS TEAM WITH XM, HD RADIO™, and APPLE TO OFFER UNRIVALED AUDIO PERFORMANCE AND CHOICE
Rolls Royce Phantom and Hyundai Genesis are the only automobiles to offer a Lexicon-branded state-of-the-art audio system featuring LOGIC 7® technology. The Lexicon® surround sound audio system includes a 12-channel digital amplifier and 17 speakers producing more than 500 watts of sound in 7.1 discrete audio. Genesis is also the first popular brand to offer the clarity of digital HD Radio technology from the factory. Navigation-equipped Genesis models also include a 30-gigabyte hard drive and XM NavTraffic. Like every 2009 Hyundai, Genesis comes standard with XM Satellite Radio. Auxiliary USB and iPod® inputs allow drivers to fully control and charge iPods directly from the head unit.

ADVANCED LIGHTING TECHNOLOGY
The 2009 Genesis offers Xenon high-intensity discharge (HID) headlights. The advantages of HID headlamps include greater lighting power, daylight-type lighting and reduced power consumption. In addition, the cut lines of the new HID headlights are extremely precise, providing maximum nighttime visibility without distracting other drivers. The lamps also feature an auto-leveling function which keeps the headlights level regardless of how the vehicle is loaded with passengers or cargo. Genesis also offers an Automatic Front Lighting System that allows the headlamps to automatically swivel for better visibility when cornering.

NEW TECHNOLOGIES DELIVER IMPROVED SAFETY PERFORMANCE

Maintaining Hyundai's emphasis on delivering leading safety technology, Genesis boasts world-class active and passive safety features to help both prevent accidents, and maximize the well being of its occupants in the event of a collision. The Genesis continues the Hyundai tradition of standardizing key life-saving safety technology such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC), eight airbags and electronic active head restraints.

Genesis' total of eight airbags include advanced dual front airbags, front and rear seat-mounted side-impact airbags, and roof-mounted side curtain airbags for both front and rear outboard seat occupants.

An electronic active head restraint system will debut on the 2009 Hyundai Genesis. Hyundai is the first popular brand to offer electronic active front head restraints, an improvement over mechanically based active head restraint systems. Until now, electronic active head restraints could only be found on select Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Lexus models. Active front head restraints have been proven by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety to help prevent whiplash.

Genesis has a total of 8 ultrasonic sensors located on the front and rear bumpers. The sensors along with the rear backup camera help detect how close objects are when parking. Distance is indicated on the in-dash screen and accompanied by an audible warning tone.

Forward-looking radar is used in Genesis' Smart Cruise Control system. Smart Cruise Control adjusts vehicle speed to maintain distance from the vehicle ahead in the same lane.

Genesis is brought to a halt by large four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with Brake Assist and Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD). The 12.6-inch front rotors have single-piston floating calipers and the rear brakes feature 12.4-inch rotors with single-pistons on V6 models. Twin-pistons and larger rotors are featured on V8 models.

WARRANTY
The all-new 2009 Hyundai Genesis is protected by the Hyundai Advantage, America's Best Warranty™. Coverage includes five-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper protection, 10-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty, and seven-year/unlimited mileage anti-perforation coverage. In addition, Genesis buyers receive 24-hour roadside assistance coverage at no extra charge for five years (no mileage limit) and that service includes emergency towing, lockout service and limited coverage for trip-interruption expenses. I have no idea about Hyundai's build quality, but This car looks fairly impressive, both ascetically and it's mechanical specifications. It looks like they took a lot of styling cues from BMW and Mercedes Benz on the exterior. Interior defiantly looks Asian but with a Mercedes Benz and Audi influence. I do not believe this car is superior to its German or Japanese rivals but the price may be the big selling point. I as I'm sure a lot of people think of Hyundai as more of a low end car brand. Cars that are for the daily commuter on a tight budget. But this car looks fairly luxurious.

I do not believe it will cut into BMW's 7 series or Mercedes Benz's S class sales as the car is being marketed to do. I beleve the people who will buy this will be the people who would normaly buy a BMW 3 series, Mercedes Benz C class, Cadillac CTS, or Lincoln MKZ that may need or want a larger car for the same money.

We will see how the market embraces it.

TheHorta:

Wow. I never imagined I would covet a Hyundai.

gary:

now why can't they put that V8 in the coupe?

as far a reliability goes, the wifes sonata is 2 years and 35k miles with not one problem.

dumping my Acura for the Coupe as son as its out.

might trade the sonata for this one too.

BigWill:

Hyundai is really getting it's act together. They've figured out how to get another 25-30 HP out out of their V-6s to put them near or above the competition. We'll have to see if they've figured out suspensions yet. If the 268-hp base model is less than $30K with most of the stuff in the Technology section above, Lincoln is going to have a lot of trouble rationalizing why the MKS is worth $8K more.

This pretty much confirms Toyota's insistance that its biggest threat is from South Korea, not Detroit.

Plazmic:

If a Camry, an Accord and a G35 had a baby ...

I don't think anyone expects this to cut into the $60k market. What they want to do is what Hyyndai is good at - make people think they're driving a car that is in a class above what they paid. They're targetting people who *want* a 60k car and maybe would buy a used one.

I personally like the look inside and out. I wonder if people would rather buy a Hyndai over a Camry/Accord though. It'd be a hard sell for me.

ThrawnDougal:

I have only owned 1 Hyundai and I can say the build quality is really good. I own a 2003 Santa Fe GLS w/ 4 wd. Take it to the mountains all the time and hauls a lot more stuff than my Civic. Was a bargain to the competition at the time and I really enjoy it.

It now has 61,000 miles and I have had no problems. Although, I drive it a lot, I don't use it as a daily commuter.

The Genesis looks to be a great sports sedan for the price. Which is why I bought my Hyundai. I can't comment on Hyundai's coupe/sedan quality, but their SUV build quality and reliability is good.

Keith:

Coount me in! I love this car. Hyundai is ona roll. Their quality has been impressive witht ehri latest cars, particularly the Sonota. The Azera is good too, although not as good in crash tests as the competiion and the lack of nav in that class hurst it. But this baby may be my next car! Bring it on...

Allen:

The interior is what we need to see. If its interior can keep up with the design of Mercedes and BMW (that last one being easier than nought), than Hyundai has a winner here.

It starts under $30,000, but I can't image you'd get the V8 for less than $40,000. Still, I can see this cutting into the $50,000 market (where the 5 series and E class are)(the 7 series and S Class start around the 90s don't they?), and its a stretch to say Hyundai would attract those buyers.

It's kinda like the Volkswagen Phaeton: not to many people want a uber-luxury car with a Volkswagen badge on the front, the same may be said for the Genesis. Still, the Genesis is half the price when fully equipped probably.

Kell:

If I needed a family car, this could be it. Talk about Bang for your Buck. And it looks good inside and out, too. 'Nuff said. Test drive please!

"now why can't they put that V8 in the coupe?"

/agree. That would pretty much guarantee superior performance for the coupe against the Mustang (the stated goal) and many other performance cars.

dude:

Wow...This car might be cheap, but parts to be replaced will be super expensive and yet hard to find. Other than that Hyundai has balls.

SEALBoy:

I'm really liking this. Sure, it may take styling cues from other high-profile cars, but honestly who doesn't these days. We just focus the "copy-cat" idea on Hyundai more because it has a bad reputation - which, I must say, these past few years is fast becoming a misconception.

For $30000, this car is a clear winner. It's got the bells and whistles of the other cars, and from the pictures it looks like it has the quality too.

Kevin Wallace:

Give it all wheel drive instead of the typical single axle single wheel drive and I'm there. Even if it's driven by both wheels on a single axle I'd hold off until all wheel drive was released. Having owned a new RL and finding it unbeatable for the price I'd welcome a new price point even if it came from Hyundai.

Cargasm:

Call me impressed. Looks damn good. Specs are nice, too. I didn't read anything about fuel economy, but as long as they are not abysmal, it shouldn't be an issue. All the Hyundai owners I know say good things about their cars.

Are they going to build this car in their Alabama plant?

I

Sphere:

I've have to say, I'm impressed. Reliability apparently is there, buildy quality idem, not sure about the quality of the materials (leather, headliner, plastics to the touch), but the power...wow.

The style is very good, better than most recent BMW & Mercedes IMHO, and on a par with the M35/M45. Acura, and the domestics are the one who will lose most I think. Would you buy a Lincoln/Mercury, or a Caddilac or a fully loaded 300C over this? Maybe, but the competition will be tough.

I'm most curious about the suspension, though. This is tough to get right, the balance between ride and handling in this class is crucial. Steering feel is another thing I'm not expecting much of, but even if its numb and light, many oponents suffer of the same disease (Lexus 430 GS, etc.).

Overall I'm impressed. Can't wait for the reviews.

NoDos:

I love this car! I love it even more that its a Hyundai. Which means, it'll lose value quickly so I can buy a used one for real cheap! Yeah! I won't have to wait 10yrs to afford a used Lexus, I only have to wait 1 or 2yr for this.

bliq:

I think Camcord should be worried about this car as it's playing in the space that the premium camcords live and this car outclasses both by a significant margin (save judgement on the handling as no one knows what that's going to be like yet).

My theory is the coupe is going to be positioned as a handler and not a drag racer and putting a relatively heavy V8 in there will upset the balance. Perhaps a twin turbo V6 is in the coupe's future- possibly sportier than a luxury oriented V8.

Given Hyundai's reliability record recently (excellent) and their rising resale values, this should be on many people's short lists. It's going to come down to how well Hyundai lets people know that this car exists.

Cheap Car Lover:

Looks good. I hate the wood on the steering wheel though, lexus does it and it makes it much harder to drive. Leather wrapped please.

I love this car because it's cheap compared to it's competition. I'm enamored with it's RWD too.

Also, what the heck is a lexus gs450? A hybrid v6? find a better comparision. A gs460(ls engine...) would have 380hp, which is better output, specific or otherwise, than this hyundai.

Cheap Car Lover:

Too keep people from thinking I'm stupid, or uninformed...

Why does the gs460 have 352hp and the ls460 have 380?

gilly:

RL in the front and LS in the back....

- Acura + Lexus = Hyundai?

gilly:

John:

It's definitely a clusterf*ck of designs from other cars (interior and exterior), but then again it's not like they are trying to reinvent the car... XD

Gilly has the right idea about the exterior. I personally think the rear looks more like the 5 series done right.

SteelCity1981:

This car looks great. If Hyundai continues at this rate, Toyota and Honda are in for some serious competition.

rene:

good they kept the hyundai badge.

All these 2nd brands dont add much, except for complexity.

Now if only Tata (india) could producte it for US3200.....

Evan:

well son of a bitch that was the car i saw on the freeway about a month ago. all this time i thought it was a new accord because they have the same doors\windows. that makes me sad.but at the same time happy that i got the picture.

Sambonator:

I wonder what the pricing will be for the V8 version?

Diesel:

Funnny how Lexus has its own copycat now like Lexus itself was a cheap copy of the Benz at first.

LS anyone?

longdxcommuter:

I'm in, RWD w/ 2 powerful V6's or a more powerful V8, plus all the luxury touches of its rivals, Hyundai has a clear winner. My brother is in route sales and has an '07 Azera, with over 55k (trouble free) miles. The only obstacle Hyundai has to overcome was with the shoddy build quality in the late '80's early '90's that negatively affects resale values today. Still, between this and the Tiburon coupe replacement, Hyundai is really making waves.

Very pretty car!your blog really beautiful!

That looks very good. Hyundai is playing their game very competitively now.

Frank C:

OK, I read this right? 368HP, rearwheel drive, all the bells and whistles, will ring in most likely around 40K for the highend Genesis..... Using REGULAR UNLEADED GAS!

SO, that means 20K less to finance, Also means I wouldn't have to spend that amount in gas for the BMW, Mercedes, LS430 and M45, which, as far as I know, use Super Unleaded. And, let's not even discuss the insurance costs.

I've owned 3 Hyundai's: 2002 Sonata, 2003 Santa Fe, and the 2007 Veracruz. I now consider myself a loyal Hyundai fan for the last 5yrs. I figured I've saved on new car purchases the sum of almost $19K over these three vehicles when compared to other vehicles I looked at. I have also had 1 problem in five years from any Hyundai. My 2002 Sonata had an O2 sensor fail, that was replaced under warranty. That's it. Other than normal maintenance, the Hyundai's I've owned cost nothing more.

Time to trade in the 2002 Sonata, 81K miles. It's been a fantastic little car for me, but, it's time graduate to upper level. I've been awaiting the arrival of the Genesis. I'll see you at the dealership as soon as they arrive. Not overly concerned about the "it looks like a Lexus/Infiniti/BMW/Mercedes/Acura crowd." What matters to me, is that it looks like a great car and unbeatable price.

BTW, the 2007 Veracruz just beat the Lexus RX350 in a head-on comparision conducted by Motortrend. I don't take much stock in auto mags, because I believe people will justify buying whatever vehicle suits their needs. However, I found it interesting that Hyundai was being compared to Lexus, when everyone says it's competitors are the Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot.

See, people are catching on! Looks like I'll have to start forking over more cash at the dealer in the future. Anyone checked our resale values for Hyundai's lately. Might be an interesting story their too.

DrFill:

Now that the Hyundai mole has popped-off.....the big wind has blown over
It's a very nice car, will be finely made, and is a strong value.
There are issues
No style. Couldn't look more anonymous
iDrive
Hyundai name (If you being up Lexus, show some guts and challenge Lexus)
VW history
Forgetting who they are. Elantra and Sonata are losing share by chunks, while execs go chasing rainbows.
The company struggled to show a yearly sales increase, and still fell short of sales predictions by over 75k! They have a brand-new, 9-car lineup, and the whole company was outsold by Toyota Camry!
If you wannabe, do. Don't half-step. If you want Lexus, go get 'em. Earn some respect.
Don't reverse engineer BMW's and Mercedes, than pound your chest. Be original, and step up.
Thank you.

Alex:

Hyundai quality is A+

As mentioned when one of the top execs at Toyota was asked who they are afraid of they had one name: Hyundai.

This is going to be a fantastic car.
