Detroit 2008: Honda Pilot Prototype Hits the Stage

img_6378.jpg
Honda has used the Detroit Auto Show to unveil the Pilot prototype that conveys many of the design features of the all-new 2009 Honda Pilot.

For the 09' model year the Pilot will receive all new styling inside and out. Legroom, cargo and occupant capacity have increased across the board. The Pilot's platform has also been redesigned for better handling and ride comfort. The 2009 Pilot will also feature the Honda-exclusive Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure.

Under the hood the V6 engine will feature Honda's fuel-saving Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) technology that can operate in 6-cyl and 4 and 3 cylinder modes for improved fuel economy. The new system is an improvement over the current Pilot, which can only operate in 6 and 3-cylinder modes.

The 2009 Honda Pilot will debut in the spring of this year.

Tom:

That front... its just aweful.
Oh man, I hope they don't go with it on their production vehicle.

Jim:

I was looking forward to the new Pilot, but this thing looks like an over-sized Jeep Patriot. No thanks.

gilly:

Wow...I didnt know hideous came in silver.

Joe:

In every article the first 5 comments are negative. It's the internet tough guys. Like the clean redesign and fresh engine tech. Good job honda, no matter what the faceless big-boys say. It will kill whatever is left of the Explorer/Durango.

Scot :

Honda hit a home run with the Civic and CRV, a base run with the Accord, and pulled out the "BIG UGLY STICK" for the Pilot. What are they thinking? Joe, is right though, it will beat the competition because it is a Honda.

k1dude:

I like it. It looks more rugged than the current model. It's also bucking the trend of suppository shaped SUV's that have huge exteriors and tiny interiors. I like the utilitarian boxy shape. That's the most efficient use of cargo space. I want an SUV for it's utility, not fashion. Throw on some crossbars/steps and you have one rugged looking cargo hauler. I think the new Pilot will be a home run. My wife already wants one. Remember, it seemed everyone hated the Ridgeline styling when it came out, now most people love it.

zippy:

Not liking the nose on this thing.
I typically like Honda styling and I buy their products, but I ain't liking this. Acutally, if they just put some more conventional headlights in there, it would look better.
Still, if I could get 25/26 mpg hwy and at least 20 city, I will consider this.
I keep looking at this and its starting to remind me of the first gen Xterra.

Alysandra:

Kinda funny looking but I like it. I think it will grow on people. I like the round blueish internal headlight. The dash treatment is pretty good too. The backend seems a bit like the nissan armada. Too plain.

MDX Lover:

Honda, you’ve got to be kidding!!!

Honda hit jackpot with the two Acura MDX models, with unique 'anti-boxy' looks that made that vehicle stand out in the crowd of the pretty dull SUV sector. The new Pilot, however, takes it back by two generations. It looks more like the Nissan Xtera, or perhaps
the ‘rap-special’ Cadillac Escalante. Hopefully this new box at least will be fuel efficient…

WS:

Certainly isn't as visually interesting as the current Pilot. Seems very slab-sided with few design elements. Reminiscent an early Ford Explorer or Bronco II.

SVT:

I bet Honda designers went out one night, one of them drank so much he puked and the rest thought the vomit created a pattern that had to be on their next design. Behold the craptacular Elemental Pilot.

gilly: now it does

MDX Lover: cadillac escalante, esse edition indeed

Andri:

I don't know... Personally I think honda has been making a fool of itself with the Pilot, Element, Civic type-r.. Actually I can't think of any good looking honda from since the old civic type r. Ok and s2000.

Cheap Car Lover:

The worst part about this new pilot is the headlights, they look like they picked them up at Pep-Boys. Other than that it looks pretty good.

I HATE crossover vehicles, thanks for making a real SUV Honda!

Kell:

Yet another reason sports wagons would be superior in this niche. Let's face it, this thing will never see a dirt road, and that sucks for an SUV. It is unattractive, boxy, and underpowered, yet still sucks gas due to high weight and poor aerodynamics. I'll bet it still handles horribly due to such a high center of gravity. It falls into the "no-fun-at-all" category IMO.

The only thing it has going for it is space, but a well designed sports wagon can come close if not match it, and be fun to drive too. How bad do you need that extra few cu.ft. of space? At the cost of literally everything else? I just don't get the "fake SUV" craze.

I sell Honda Cars/Trucks... I wish I could sell the bikes too. but what-ev' so the Ridgeline... people hated on for 4 months before it came out and one the 2006 Truck of the Year... The Civic... 06' yeah HOME RUN! then The CR-V... I had never seen an SUV get such low marks from everybody.... (FYI, it is now the #1 selling SUV in the beautiful U.S. of A!) then came the Accord... Mixed reviews, I think most people were upset that it got bigger, its selling well, and if you don't like it, don't buy it. as for this 09 Pilot Prototype... IT'S A PROTOTYPE! no those headlights won't stay (thank you for that) and the sweet high&tight dual chrome finishers most likely will not either (big bummer) but the shape the size, the over-all look Honda is not going to spend a couple mill on a pile that doesn't clean-up well. so relax, enjoy the show, and go look at it in the showrooms whats it comes out.

Peace.

Oh, p.s. It is RUMORED that Honda Has bee thinking about an SUV w/ a smaller than 07 pilot but bigger than 07 CR-V... 2.2 i-DTEC? or 3.0L V6 Hybrid? like Nissan Murano/Lex rx 330 size???????

as for the small Sports WGN, look up the Honda STREAM and tell the Honda Guys/Gals in CA, that they need to bring it ove here for us to love too.
