Next-Generation Volvo XC90 has Been Cancelled...RIP XC90

volvoxc90.jpg
According to a new report by Auto Motor & Sport the next-generation Volvo XC90 has been cancelled.

According to the report Volvo has decided to kill its flagship SUV due to a lack of environmentally-friendly powertrain options. Volvo has no hybrid powertain in the works or even a start/stop engine function, so rather than spend the large amounts of money to develop the systems Volvo has decided to ditch the model all together. Slowing sales of other vehicles in the segment also can be blamed for the decision.

The 2009 XC90 will receive a facelift and the model will continue on until around 2012. The smaller XC60, XC50 and maybe even XC30 crossovers are still in the works despite the death sentence for the XC90.

Toss in a torquey, efficient diesel and you have a powertrain. I thought Ford had some hybrid engines in some of their small SUVs but I guess the 4cyl options aren't "luxury" enough for the eco-friendly Volvo crowd.

Allen:

Its sad that one of the first real casualties of the SUV-downturn was one of the nicer, more fuel-efficient models. Huh, well at least whatever sells in its place will be even more fuel efficient.

Sphere:

I don't get it. Why don't they kill they product in 2008 already? Why keep on making it until 2012? If they are so ashamed of the engine, why keep it?

It looks like those greenies who preach everybody to save and buy expensive lamps, but who themselves can't get rid of their private jets (see Al Gore, Larry David's wife Laurie) from their west to the east coast homes and back...

Hey Ford, do like the rich, just buy Volvo some carbon credits to offset a new V8 400hp engine (or make your customers pay some - hint, give them a carbon credit CERTIFICATE! wow...), and you'll be fine! hahaha.

Andrew:

@Sphere,
WTH are you talking about???

I am very surprised you know how to use a computer to get to this website..... Oh.. wait, are you looking at someone's favorites link??

Back to the point, why would Volvo kill off an existing model when the posting states they are going to kill off the next generation model....

We don't care about Al Gore or the other people you listed... It's already a pain to board a plane without being stripped, poked, questioned, searched.. some people just want an easier experience to get to point a to point b where ever that might be...

Ford has been somewhat hands off with interactions between Volvo and crossplatform integration. They tried that early on and consumers of Volvo spoke with their walets going somewhere else.

Al_Frick:

Would you rather get blowed up by al qaeda than being "inconvenienced" by some TSA employees doing their job? It's amazing that liberals feel that a wait in line is not worth the price of security against an enemy that has vowed to kill as much people as possible. Wow. We have American soldiers risking their lives every day and you can't stand in line for 20 minutes.

blowed-up:

Al_Frick, go back to school, learn grammar, and THEN claim nonsense republican opinons in an auto forum!

It's your narrow-minded viewpoints that will drive our enemies to get us "blowed-up"!

from the website: Volvo officials have replied to Auto Motor Sport Sweden with a brief statement that XC90 facelift is indeed in development, however, the next generation XC90 has not been canceled. Although it is still not clear, the new XC90 will undoubtedly be built using a Ford platform to take advantage of cost savings in an effort to remain competitive as stated above. Volvo stresses that Ford does not dictate which models Volvo will build. They are more autonomous than ever and freely proceed with planning of new models with independence. By making a fresh start with a new platform, Volvo will lose a couple of years, but the benefits of having a more competitive model is worth the investment, especially as such an important vehicle to Volvo as the XC90

"blowed up by al qaeda" ?

Keep the political crap off this car blog. If you really care about our national security, ask yourself:

1. Why our borders are wide open. Simulated WMDs have been smuggled across numerous times successfully by TV stations and even government sponsored tests. Check this out:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1sz_Vyutuw

2. 90% of import containers are not scanned before loading them on trucks bound for our cities. Oops.
3. Why are power plants, dams, and power grid stations are wide open. You can just drive thru the little wooden gate with a loaded truck. Some dams you just drive over.
4. Walking thru metal detectors and limiting my liquids to 5oz. will not stop a suicidal terrorist. Hell, just blow yourself up in the security line at the airport, there's more people there than on the airplane.

Stop being a mindless follower and think for yourself. I don't care what party you are.

Kell:

I think Volvo is doing the right thing. I can see more car companies following suit, as well. Sales figures show that SUV's are falling out of favor, especially large ones. With rare exception, the ones still being sold have big discounts. Small SUV's don't make sense to me either, since the interior is the same size as a 3 or 5 door hatch and the styling, mileage and handling are worse.

walets?

And as for the article, and your statements about Ford and Volvo,
1. There is a lot of cross platform and technology use in Ford with regards to its purchased subsidiaries.

2. Volvo, Ford, and Mazda all have technologies on the drawing board for engine start/stopping technology when the car isn't moving.
