More Rumors Claim That the Mitsubishi Concept RA Hints at the Next Eclipse

conceptra.jpg
Mitsubishi released two official sketches of the automaker's Concept RA last week. The concept is going to be unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show next month. Initially everyone has speculated that the concept is providing hints of what the next Eclipse is going to look like.

Well now according to insiders the concept could provide a hint of what the next Eclipse will be like. According to What Car the next Eclipse could also make its way to Europe. The concept is powered by a 2.2L turbodiesel that puts out 202 horsepower. The diesel also meets Europe and America's stringent emissions regulations.

Since the engine does meet regulations on both sides of the Atlantic, insiders are suggesting that the model could make its way over to Europe.

Either way lets hope that Mitsubishi is finally trying to return the Eclipse to status it held in the early 90's.

Travis:

I really love the way this thing looks, the only things that bother me are a roof line looks almost impossibly low. and the fact that the rear end needs more work, the hatch and rear should flow together nicely and the bumper should be less bloated, the bloated portion reminds me of the current car, they need to look at the bobbed off rear of the G1 car, it would match the front styling MUCH better. and I love the front end styling and the sides, they are firm and angular and really stand out in todays world of rounded organic shapes.

202 hp and 335 ft lbs from a Turbo Diesel (per prior rumor) should serve up some soild performance if they keep things light I could see a 6 second 0~60 being possible, and it should even get good fuel economy.

Jake:

Please Mitsu, make it RWD or AWD!!

I think it would be neat to put this design into productions with only a few minor changes to it. I would prefer AWD to FWD or even RWD.

Snake:

1) The design will never make it into production as shown - the beltline is too high, the wheels far too flared, etc. Why do companies show drawings...that they NEVER make as shown??

2) Two-door coupes are a dead market. The production costs are not much less than a good 4-door, and it seems the public would rather have the roominess of the 4-door than the sportiness of the coupe.

Regretfully the hayday of the coupe seems to have passed, regardless of what "enthusasts" say in marketing studies. When it comes time to put the money down on the product...they'll go for a sporty SUV or a "sports sedan" instead. Considering that Mitsubishi is on it's financial rump, they are far better putting the development money into the area of the market where the demand is.

Kell:

Getting a sports sedan or SUV is a compromise I no longer have to suffer. I'm in the market for a fast sports coupe. I'll keep my little commuter/grocery getter and get a real sports car to pamper. :-)

As I mentioned before if Mitsu keeps the major design cues from this drawing and keeps the car under 3000lbs., that 200hp/300ftlb turbosiesel (bio?) could be successful. Keep in mind the Hyundai Genesis coupe is going to be stiff competition given it's price, weight and 300+ hp.

Paul:

Passenger cars are for pussies

A company's success might lie in the mass market of stupid looking 4 doors, but the appeal of the car showroom is driven by fast sports cars

SUV's and 4 doors are for people who don't care about what they are driving.... and are furthermore, incapable of taking the responsibility to evade danger. Sort of like a rolling steel bread box.

For this kind of car RWD is best, AWD is good, and FWD is a MISTAKE, so don't make it FWD or you'll be considered as stupid as the people being lead through life in steel bread boxes.
