Winding Road is reporting that Lexus wants to further close the gap between the IS-Fand the BMW M3 and the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG. The IS-F/R version is going to be powered by a 5.0L Yamaha produced V8 that puts out 429 horsepower and 376 lb-ft of torque. That is up from 417 horsepower and 371 lb-ft of torque in the current IS-F. The "R" version is also going to be lighter by about 220 pounds thanks to carbon fiber and a stripped down interior.

Like the M3 and various other AMG contraptions, why not make a Coupe?

While I do like the car, I do kind of understand Jason here. Sports sedans are great, but once you get to a certain level of wealth as to actually afford a weekend car (and with stripped down interior and presumably harder suspension, this would be one), a coupe makes more sense just to save the weight from the beginning.

I completely agree. While a sedan IS-F makes sense (a sporty sedan that is family friendly), once you start stripping down the interior and stiffening the suspension does it become unfriendly to your family. It may be fun for you, but little Lucy might not like the rough ride so much.
IS-F/R aught to be a coupe!

/agree
I've been thinking this for years...all the sports sedan hype about lowering weight, beefing up the spring rates, swaybars, more hp, etc. just doesn't make sense if you're still carrying around a back seat, two extra doors, a bigger body and compromising on aerodynamics.
Hmmm, I want a fast car, but oh wait, I need to commute to work, carry kids, get groceries, go to home depot, blah, blah, blah. All this is diluting the purpose of the sports car. On top of that the fanboi's will tell you it's the best thing since sliced bread, Pffft.
Pamper your real sports car and get a high MPG 'beater' for the everyday chores.

This story has popped up several times now, but Lexus is still denying an IS-F-R-version (or IS-F Evo like AutoExpress called it back in March).
Would be nice though.
On the SEMA show last October Lexus showed a satin-black IS-F that was full of extra goodies. It might have been a hint...

This story has popped up several times now, but Lexus doesn't say anything about an IS-F-R-version (or IS-F Evo like AutoExpress called it back in March) yet.
On the SEMA show in October they did however show a satin-black IS-F that was fully loaded with all kinds of go-fast-goodies which could be a hint.
It would be nice...!

Um, they make a 2 door m3. They always have... The 4 door shows up intermittently.
