Detroit Auto Show Preview: 2009 Honda Pilot Prototype Unveiled

09_pilot_prototype_rendering.jpg
Honda is going to use the Detroit Auto Show next month to unveil its Honda Pilot prototype.

As usually is the case with all Honda prototypes that show up on the auto show circuit this Pilot prototype will be a thinly disguised version of the all-new 2009 Pilot. From this official rendering it looks like Honda is going to buck the trend of crossovers that look like cars with more truck-like styling. At first glance this photo looks like a new Jeep.

PRESS RELEASE:
Prototype Honda Pilot Headed to North American International Auto Show

12/12/2007 -TORRANCE, Calif. - A prototype of the next-generation Honda Pilot will be unveiled at the January 2008 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced today.

The prototype will convey design features of the more boldly-styled, next-generation Pilot and will emphasize authentic SUV styling, clever interior packaging and advanced technologies for safety, fuel efficiency and convenience.

The current-generation Pilot offers versatile eight-passenger seating and all-weather, medium-duty off-road capabilities while earning a distinctive reputation in the midsize SUV class for its refined handling and ride comfort. Among its numerous accolades, the Honda Pilot has earned Car and Driver magazine's prestigious "5Best Truck" award for six straight years (2002 thru 2007).

Additional Honda vehicles to be on display at NAIAS include the FCX Clarity hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, introduced at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show, and the CR-Z concept vehicle, introduced at the 40th Tokyo Motor Show. Limited retail marketing of the FCX Clarity will begin in summer 2008. The CR-Z is a next-generation lightweight sports car concept equipped with Honda's original gas-electric hybrid system.

It looks really nice. It would be interesting to see how close the production version is when compared to the prototype.

GT Fan:

Looks very decent, and very similar to... the last generation Land Rover Freelander (front end, not necessarily a bad thing to me), combined with some Hummer styling cues... (rear quarter window panels)

Either way, I'd rather my wife consider a vehicle like this over the Land Rover LR3 any day ;-)

(no offense to Land Rover owners of course, we used to own one)

Oh and yes... as was mentioned in another article.

It's yet another glorified station wagon. lol

Turkle:

This is only a sketch, but it has me thinking. Honda states clever interior features, but they don't say a larger interior. With the rake that front wind shield has, I would expect some usable space to be lost. The overall design is a large departure from the current Pilot's large, open greenhouse and low waist line. This thing seems to follow the trend of making cars with high belt lines and "tank slit" windows. Styling wise, not a bad thing, but it does limit outside visibility for the driver. The possible glass panels on the roof (do you see them?) will provide needed light that would be limited by the smaller windows.
I would also be really impressed if the front overhang stays as small as it is in this drawing. I really like how the front end of this sketch looks compared to the current Pilot.

Tod:

Has anybody else noticed how over the last few years the size of the side windows have been shrinking?
Cars are starting to look more and more like APC (Armored Personel Carrier)

Greg:

I can't believe how you can say "I like it" based on a drawing... Automakers prove over and over that their prototypes rarely look like the illusions conjured up by the artists... and the real vehicle rarely looks like the usually pretty nice anyway prototype. Who cares about drawings, prototypes and hypothetical numbers. Let's see real cars, with real mpg improvements, with real hybrid systems, etc... Less smoke and mirrors, PLEASE.

(well, keep the standard mirrors.. :))

thrawn:

If no one says "I like it" on paper first, then you will never see a production version in the first place.

longdxcommuter:

I am more interested in the prospect od diesel V6 engines coming to Honda/Acura in 2009

Dude:

I agree with Turkle. The current Pilot is on my want list. But only if they would change the ugly saddle interior that comes with the exterior colors that I want. I like the current model because of the excellent visibility and large interior.

I notice almost all the new SUV releases have been increasing the exterior size at the same time they shrink the interior size. They are making them aerodynamically sleeker at the expense of interior space. They may look cooler and have better drag coefficients, but they can't hold anything anymore. They all have sloping rear rooflines that make the liftgate opening so small you can't fit a pizza box through the back anymore.

It seems the auto makers are trying to put a sedan body on a SUV frame. They are turning SUV's into glorified sedans with high seat heights.

The U in SUV stands for utility. Give me utility (space), or why bother? Go out and buy a sedan with better mpg instead.

tom::

With the sleeker rake on the windshield, hopefully they'll increase the length and wheelbase to about 6-8 inches to better compete with the likes of GMC's Acadia.

Wished that the middle seats would slide forward/back a couple inches to give third row seaters a little more room to wiggle their toes from the current setup.

They should of used the Odyssey's wheelbase and built the new Pilot from there, maybe a couple inches short in length.

But I'm sure it'll be a competant and reassuring as the current and outgoing model.

Had set my mind on the 2008 Honda Accord EX-L 4 Cyl.....then I had several problems with transporting items in my current sedan a 1998 Lexus and thought, I need SPACE! Started looking at small to mid-size SUV's. While searching the internet I found that the reliable Honda Pilot was going to be redesigned for 2009 and would debute as early as Spring 2008. So I said well I might as well wait. I found 2 other vehicles that interested me the Toyota Highlander and the Buick Enclave. The Toyota Highlander is still an option until I see the 2009 Pilot. I found the Buick Enclave to be a bit on the Large Side but I LOVED the 2 Captain's Chairs in the 2nd row seating.........does anybody know if this could/would be available in the 2009 Pilot????? My daughter has a Tahoe and it is so hard to get in and out of the 3rd row.

Jeff:

If you don't need the all wheel drive feature an Odyssey has far more room and mileage which is at least as good. The third seat in the current Pilot is useless. Even small children can't fit in it comfortably. The Pilot would be better if the third seat could be taken out. Then you would at least have more storage space.
