It looks like the first photo of the all-new 2009 Dodge Ram has been leaked. Earlier today this photo showed up on the internet, but it was still up in the air if the photo was valid. Well now it looks like someone over at Dodge messed up and put the photo on the Mopar Accessories site for the 2008 Dodge Ram.
This is definitely not a photo of the 2008 Ram, instead this is the first photo of the throughly reworked 2009 version. There still aren't very many details about the new truck, although it looks like Dodge engineers added a little locking storage compartment on the outside of the bed like the Nissan Titan.
Thanks to Boogster for the tip.

Looks ugly, just like the current model.

A step backwards in appearance if you ask me. I think the current Ram looks good and really upped the ante when it came out a few years back.
Looks too similar to the Avenger front end.

Did Dodge hit a wall in the design department? This is like the 3rd revision of the orginal Ram that debuted back in 2002. Same shape that we have been used to seeing for the past 7 years. But, this revision looks better then the last. The funny thing is since this revision looks so close to the last two models, you prob won't even notice these new models driving past you if you weren't really paying attention, that's how close they look to the past two models.

Owning an '06 Mega Cab, this looks like a Ford. The front bumper is much worse, shoulda kept the round fogs. The gap between the wheels and body is way too small, even for a 1500. And the two tone body molding really makes it look Ford like. Also seems the "Big Rig" style is just slowly melting away. My '06 looks much less aggressive than my '96. And the locking storage in back breaks the clean lines of the bed side, terrible!

That was just classic :)

Is it just me or is that thing stealing some of it's front end design elements from the new Lancer?
I see a lot of sharp looking individual design elements, but over all they don't seem to fit together properly at all. It's like half of a truck that was trying to look sporty and sleek was mixed with half of a truck that was trying to look massive got blended together randomly and none of the pieces fit properly. The front fenders, headlights and grille would look sharp if the hood and bumper matched them a little better.

My first thought was wow this is easily the cleanest, most mature and handsome pickup truck design on the market now.
But then I see everyone else here seems to hate it. That was a surprise. I think all the other trucks except maybe the GM ones have gone gaudy and over-the-top in trying to look macho and crap. They look tacky and ridiculous to me.
This, on the other hand, is understated, pure, perfection. Wish I could say that about more other chrysler vehicles lately.

It looks fine to me... not great, but certainly better than the current F150s.
I want my next car to be a truck... I know I'm never getting rid of my current car (91 Integra- lives up to it's name) but it would be great to have a truck in addition to it. I miss the body styles of old.

get off the foreign oil crap already. Its a truck for Gods sake. Some of us need the versatility of these vehicles and are willing to pay for the gas to run them. BTW, my other car is a civic so MYOB you little tofu eating pinko liberal commie.

"tofu eating pinko liberal commie"
Ha, that got a good chuckle out of me.
The gas thing is a concern to most people but there is no denying that people need trucks and other work vehicles. Afterall, its kind of hard to carry three ladders, a power generator, a tool chest, and thirty other things in the back of a Toyota Prius.
As for me, i own a Honda Civic and a Trailblazer. The civic is my daily driver but my wife and i love the trailblazer because it allows us to carry our kids, all their stuff, and tow a boat or trailer when needed. I have no need for a truck, but i do love the utility that a vehicle like that provides. Eventually, i would like to replace the trailblazer with a Tahoe or the new Sequoia. I will give us the power of a truck with the space of a minivan.
I can't get that in my Civic (which I appreciate for its economy)

Most people do not buy a pickup on its looks. They usually buy it because of the utility part and how much horsepower/how much it can haul. Besides, I think it looks nice. :)

The truck looks like last year's truck, which looked like last year's truck, which look like last year's truck. There really isn't much change on the exterior. I only hope that the interior has received a good update.
Posted by D! | December 10, 2007 3:35 PM
Posted on December 10, 2007 15:35
Firstly, yes, its the interior that needs an update most. GM is offering wood in theirs, and its not even top end trim I think.
Second, does anyone else see some Toyota Tundra in the cab on the sides? I did.
Third, build a new nose Dodge. Its not attractive anymore, most people will drive right by the dealerships (and ads and websites) thinking "looks like Dodge hasn't updated the Ram yet."
Finally, if anyone here buys domestic vehicles because they think it helps the economy (and reduces the trade deficit), you may want to read this:
"The reason the Euro is so high against the dollar is not Europe's wonderful economy either: its nearly 20 years behind the US in terms of development according to multiple sources.
The reason the dollar is so weak is the price of oil: if you look back to 2002-2003, before the massive climb in oil prices, the dollar and Euro were neck and neck (and the Euro was the primary currency of far more countries with a combined total far more people back then too). But as the price of oil rose, so did the value of the dollar fall. Statistically speaking, the trade deficit isn't any real amount larger than it was in 2003 when we do not account for core commodity prices (food and energy). Food prices have risen slightly in the past few years but the US is still an exporter there, so only energy is left as a culprit. Oil is not just used for cars in the US: it's also the primary source of electricity after coal.
Again, go back and watch the dollar fall from 2003 to now: its falling in line with the price of energy rising. Thats because above all else, core commodities determine the value of a currency. If food and energy were suddenly 10 times more expensive in dollars just overnight, it would not matter a bit if in the same time the US began exporting more cars and stopped importing cars at all. People don't eat cars and cars do not run without energy.
The Us is dependent on Oil for its energy, Europe and other areas in the world are different though. France gets over half its electricity from nuclear power: the price of Uranium is quite stable. Germany, the Scandinavian countries and Italy mainly are powered by coal and renewables. Still, their total energy consumption is affected by one thing and one thing alone: cars. In America, you NEED a car to get around. The average commute is now two hours long, and the average distance several dozen miles from where people work.
Compare that to European nations, Japan and China, where the vast majority (nearly 4/5ths in some cases) live in densly populated cities, in which public transportation and walking are viable methods of getting around. Even though gas is $7 a gallon in Europe, people are not bothered by it because they walk to work or ride the train (and don't give me BS about how cities cause crime: that phenominon in the US was caused by the Crack Epidemic, and most of my example nations have very safe cities in terms of number of crimes per amount of people).
Hence the ultimate reason for the weakness in the dollar versus the Euro: if gas goes up in price in America, it directly effects American's daily lives and purchases. Here, to go to Wal-Mart, then Best Buy then dinner, you will probably drive. In Europe or Japan or even China, to go grocery shopping then to the electronics store then to a resteraunt, you can walk. So if gas goes up a $1, who cares?
It's sad then that some many people here wish to see American's buy more "American" trucks and SUVs for various dumb reasons from "Buy American" to "our lack of logic tells us they are safer." Nevermind that I can show you that energy prices are causing a weakness in the dollar, not net exports, and that the Ford Excursion (now that its production life is over) has had its final fatality ratio calculated and its been proven you have a greater chance of injury in it than a Mini-Cooper, some people hold onto those ideals. "
I wrote that back in November about the VW Scirocco. But please go ahead and try to prove me wrong: go graph out oil prices and place a graph of the value of the dollar to Euro against oil prices over the same time periods. You will find I am right: oil is the cause of the downfall of the dollar. Technically, any amount of money that leaves this country in an import is made back to us in "Capital Investments" in the form of the product you just purchased, and many foreign companies actually are owned in part by American ones or under contract to use American retail outlets and brand names: all which make Americans money in the form of Capital Investments. Investment is not part of Net Exports (which has made a negative number), but rather its own component of GDP which is Consumption, Investment, Government Spending and Net Exports. Hence, technically, any purchases you make in America of import goods increases Investment by the same amount as Net Exports decreases. Investment also increases when non-commodities, such as money from contracts, copyrights, and liscenses are included. Hence the reason American GDP keeps going up, even as we run a negative balance in Net Exports.

@Allen:
Excellent post. You are correct that the American dollar's collapse is directly related to the rise of energy costs. The infrastructure in the US is oil based and this reliance is the Achilles heel in our economy. China, Japan, and India's population is concentrated in densely populated cities where public transportation, motorbikes, scooters, are more of the norm. The majority of the populace in Europe is clustered in large cities where there is an emphasis on public transportation and walking. In the States, we rely and depend on our vehicles for commuting. The problem lies in that many US cities are ill prepared for the commute, leading to gridlock and extended commuting times. This further exasperates the effect of our dependance on oil.

Now back to the updated Dodge pickup, I see nothing inherently wrong with the styling. However, Dodge set the standard for American car design in the 90's and it just seems that the edgy design of that period is watered down now. I would agree that a keen eye would be required to differenciate this from the previous model at a distance. I just wish that Dodge would start with a clean sheet design and not try to incorporate elements from other large pickups( F150, Tundra, etc). I say this not as a slam on Dodge, but because I know that Dodge (now free of Daimler's reign) has a golden opportunity to reinvent the full size pickup. Like it did when it introduced the first full redesign in the 90's. I remember going to a dealership and being awestruck at that design. ( it was so unlike any other full-size pickup).

UUGGLY GAS HOG TRUCK. Allen why don't you write a book??? Warmed over version of the same thing. Won't sell. When will Americans learn? We can't build anything with good looks and Quality cept for maybe the Vette. Most people who buy these big gas hogs don't need them, sure some people with stupid horses need them but most just want to have a big American truck or SUV. How many times do you see one women alone in a big asss SUV on the phone and putting her makup on? When will we learn we have to make SACRIFICES to move this country forward and end our dependance on foriegn oil? We're funding the terrorists that want to destroy us. Stupid friggin' dumb ars Americans. I love the USA but the stupid people that live here and build these trucks like this Dodge and vote these stupid bushes as presidents and all the other aritocrats in washington tuely embarasse me to be American. I might as well be writing this to a bush, be it a weed or a president. No wonder the owrld hates us.

Todd S, as soon as you reach high school you may realize, that more than just "people with stupid horses" need trucks. Some of the happiest people I know have "stupid horses," and trucks.
I have two trucks, and I use them for truck only purposes almost daily. Sorry but a honda just won't cut it, even the Ridgeline.
BTW, vettes are faaaaaar from reliable and America shuns the concept of sacrifice, hence it being America :)

Wow, I saw this posting and thought it was a Ford too. I decided not to say anything about it, I wanted to see what other people thought first. Well, now that a ton of people are saying the same things I thought from the beginning I decided to add my two cents.
It really does look like a Ford! Dodge has really done great with the Ram through the years and if this is what they think is a good look, they've lost their design skills entirely. In the past it seemed as if they locked themselves in a room without any contact with the outside world and just let the creative juices flow and that has worked great. Now with this design, it seems as if the designers came up with ideas as if their design studio was at the end of the Ford assembly line!
Get it together Dodge, don't put this thing out there, you'll lose the great design reputation you have. You're the cool kid on the block, they all want to be like you, don't screw up like this!

I think the people who look at this truck and mistake for a Ford need to have their eyes cheked. First of all there is a big RAM head in the front grill not an oval. Second of Ford trcuks are more square looking, this is has more rounded curves.
