The estimated base price for the GSR model is $34,000 and the top of the line MR model will start at $39,000. The MR model is mainly differentiated from the GSR model with its 6-speed dual clutch transmission (TC-SST). Both models are powered by the same 2.0L turbocharged 291 horsepower engine.
Mitsubishi claims that the GSR model will go on sale in February, but the automaker is more vague about the MR model, saying that it will go on sale sometime in the spring of 2008.
Are those prices too high considering the last EVO GSR started at $28,679 and the last MR started at $35,189?

They just priced themselves out of my consideration. I'll stick with my 2006 STI.

Yes it's worth the money. This car will easily outperform anything near its price range with 4 doors, as will the WRX STi. In fact, it'll outperform most "sports cars" in this price range as well. Plus with the newer refinements (in both EVO and STi) I think they will appeal to a wider range of people, not just the speed freaks.

Err, something that the poster forgot was that this pricing isn't final, the Mitsubishi execs hope to bring down this price some, maybe a grand or so.
But I agree with everyone here that I'd rather have a 335i or WRX STi for the money. Seriously the STi will be as fast and has a hatch, but is thousands less.
I've talked with some people inside, and this is actually what it costs to produce this car now. No no, its not manufacturers costs we are seeing but the margins on this car are as good as on the last one, not better. Simple cost of living increases in Japan have made this car that much more expensive to produce in just that past few years. Even the Evo 9, which sold well, did not help Mitsubishi stay profitable, did it? No, it did not, and unless the brand increases its prices, it will keep suffering.
Even though the yen is worth far less than the dollar, remember the yen is also a singular currency, there are not coin distributions worth less than a yen. One yen literally is one penny in Japan: their equivalent of a US 10 dollar note is a 1000 Yen piece of paper. In Japan the simple volume of Yen paid out to employees now means its more expensive to produce cars in Japan than in America, hence the reason so many Japanese manufacturers are moving production to America for their most popular cars sold here. Similarly, BMW, Audi and Mercedes are moving some production here, but that is both due to volume of currency paid in salaries and higher exchange rates of the Euro to Dollar.
If Mitsubishi could afford to open a plant here for the Lancer, they'd be able to offer this much cheaper. The company doesn't have the cashflows though, so it must keep producing the car overseas.
I hate to say it, but I still rather they built a good car and overpriced it than built a bad car and priced it right.

I think it's sad that the new model is considerably more expensive and it's also significantly slower in a straight line.
I've driven a couple Evo 9's and they were insanely fast...it felt like you should need a special license to drive one lol.
But have you read any review on the new one? They tout that with the DSG gearbox it's fast around a racetrack (how may people drive soley on a track?) The recent Motor Treand article didn't turn out that way. They compared a US model Evo 9 (which didn't feature the ACD and all the gizmos they've had overseas since it's inception) to an Evo 10 with all the electronics. That they didn't mention that our Evo 9 is neutered is annoying. I'm sure if they would have had a JDM market Evo 9 it would have destroyed the Evo 10.
And it's dog slow, with reviews showing 5.2-5.4 seconds to 60mph and 1/4 mile times near (gasp) 14 seconds! As slow as a Mustang GT. The Evo 9 would rip to 60 in 4.4 to 4.7 seconds.

First of all The $28,679 was for the RS not the equivalent of the GSR which was simply badged the IX, and priced at 31,399.
Second thing The GSR has a good old fashion transmission with a Clutch so all your R-tards who don't understand exactly what the transmission in the MR model is, and what it can do, can still have the car just the way you like it.
Next thing the WRX STi starts at 35K costs 37K with forged BBS wheels (not as nice as the ones on the MR, IMHO) and then moves up to 39K for the version with Sat Nav. One should also note that the Evo X GSR is going to be the car optioned to compete directly with the WRX STi, so it's actually cheaper, Though not by the margin it used to enjoy. The MR adds better shocks, better struts, better rims, and the DSG style racing transmission which is to be fair a pricey upgrade.
Mitsubishi did make a terrible mistake with the new Evo X though, They simply went too conservative with the engine, it needs to have 315 hp and 325 ft lbs of torque to keep this car where it should be in performance. And it was a foolish waste to put 7 air bags in standard, they should be an Option, Most of the Evo faithful do NOT want to spend an extra $1200 to carry around 75 lbs of useless garbage in their car. And no one wants 11 lbs of additional sound deadening in the MR either. Mitsubishi really needs to go back and make all this extra weight that most Evo faithful do not want into options.
Last thing, this news makes me really sad I was expecting a price range closer to 36K for the EVO X MR, and had been working hard to try to fit that into my budget, 39K likely pushes this car out of the range I can afford. And I really don't want a plain manual, they are just not practical where I currently live, Mountainous Terrain + Unholy Traffic = Pass when it comes to me driving a stick at this time.

IMO I like the styling of the car. However, the price point is steep. There is a dedicated following to the Evo and I am sure that the tuner possibilities are there. Allen's post is correct, Mitsubishi is cash strapped and not aligned with another large car company (like Chrysler) so production of Mitsubishi products in the States seems like a longshot and the EVO brand is a niche product at that. Personally, I have had great luck with Mitsubishi products ( my daily commuter car has 140K trouble free miles and counting) and would like to see Mitsubishi retain a greater foothold in the US market. the purist would not condone the more conservative and softer approach of the EVO X. But, I understand Mitsubishi's approach to broaden the appeal of the car. ( a similiar philosophy w/ Subaru's STI)

Hell if that was the price anywhere else in the world it would become a number one seller.
My point, cars are to cheap in the US.
Now I'll give youse the AU price, $AUD65000, thats about $USD55000. STop winginging! Its still even dearer in Europe.

You know, adjusted for the rate of inflation, this evo cost as much as the first lancer evolution back in 92. And really, if this car is built anything like it's previous iterations, it can probably still hang with the super exotics. Anyone see the Best Motoring where the stock evo7 outran a 360 modena? The price of the evo7 was about $30k, the ferrari was somewhere around $190k.
Although I doubt this new contraption can even keep up with an evo7, let alone an new f430...

I loved the previous Evo in NFS:Hot Pursuit :)
Having said that, $40K is too much for the fit and finish of this car. It also puts it up against superior competition.
The performance is deteriorating as well, due to added weight. Mustang GTs will be it's nemesis on the street, and they go for 30K (and Mustangs are cheap to mod).
Mitsu is appealing to a larger market segment and trying to add practicality to the car, however, gas mileage is worse than a V8 at 17/22 mpg, so using it for commuting and groceries is out. Why are they diluting this car? Why does it need four doors? Maybe offer a lighter coupe for 40K!

I bought one and I love it. I ditched the boring torque starved TSX. I agree the fit and finish is not the greatest. The trunk is very small and the inlcluded 2400 Recaro seats can sometimes be slighty impractical. Other than that I love it. Its a rocket and a true sports car. In the evo x, it looks better than the IX but doesnt necessarily beat it on the track, however MT said it does behave better on the track and the road. IT beat the STi WRX by 2 seconds according to motortrend. I got the GSR for 31500, 5000k off sticker and 0%. So dont get so choked up on the price.
