VW delays the Introduction of its Clean Diesel Jetta TDI

2009 is going to go down in the history books as the year that diesels finally returned to the US. Volkswagen is going to be one of the first automakers to bring their clean diesels to this side of the Atlantic, but that introduction has been delayed.

The introduction has been delayed from April 2008 to late summer 2008. "This situation is due to a technical issue that was found during the later stages of durability testing," said VW's Adrian Hallmark in a memo to Volkswagen dealers. The technical issue is likely due to the high emissions standards that vehicles must abide by in the US.

Regarding..."This situation is due to a technical issue that was found during the later stages of durability testing...." I wonder if VW is experiencing similiar problems as Cummings diesel has had in the new Ram Pickups. I am not exactly sure, but there has been teething problems with the new Cummings Clean diesels of late. Hopefully, VW will correct this soon and bring this technology back to the US.

Durability testing..yeah, that's it. I agree it's probably the emissions bits that didn't pass during the long term tests.

SVT:

stupid American laws.... durability is definitely not a issue as we've owned a diesel VW powered vehicle and it had no trouble reaching 200 000 miles with just regular maintenance

@SVT:
I have no doubt that your diesel VW is that reliable. I think the problem lies in the new technology (urea traps, emissions controls that will be required on diesels in the US). Sometimes, the US overregulated itself

Dont hide, little yankees.
The diesel is coming.
It will conquer you.
Resistance is futile.

HYPE HYPE -- delay! HYPE HYPE -- delay! HYPE HYPE -- delay! Who does VW think prospective buyers are? A bunch of fools?
