Nissan unveiled the all-new GT-R at the LA Auto Show last week and announced a starting price of $69,850 for the supercar.
The GT-R is expected to be in US showrooms by next summer and Nissan of North America only expects to sell 1,500 of them per year.
Just in case you haven't been paying attention the GT-R is powered by a 3.8L V6 engine that produces 480 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. The car reaches 0-60 in 3.5 seconds and has a top speed of 192mph.

why did they stop at 192mph top speed, they should have it at or over 200 so that it would get more respect from lamborgini owners and ferrari owners.

Is it "US will only get" or "Nissan only expects to sale"?
So tired of these "limited edition" marketing gimmicks.
Only 300! Only 1000! Only 3!
Because we all know it will only be investors buying blocks of 100 at a time to resale and never touching them while the people who would actually buy them to drive will be paying 4x MSRP (see PS3 fiasco, GT500, etc)

Per dennisil:
"why did they stop at 192mph top speed, they should have it at or over 200 so that it would get more respect from lamborgini owners and ferrari owners."
my guess is that they set the final drive to win out on the acceleration side at the cost of longer gears that wind out to higher speeds. Most of the users (even track users) prefer acceleration out of turns and standing to "top end" numbers that they rarely have roadway to achieve.

It is purely an insurance move. A car can only go so fast until it is classified as a supercar or such. Most insurance companies will not insure it...

Perhaps the top speed may actually be slower with a taller gear. It may not make enough power to get to 200 mph with any gear. I doubt the gear selection has anything to do with 0-60 times, the supercar insurance thought makes a lot of sense though.

The numbers sound about right. I like the car but do not know too many people with $80k in their pocket.

That is the absolute dumbest thing I've ever read.
Do you think Nissan is thinking about insurance costs when they sell a limited number of $70k+ sports cars?
Gearing is imperative on any car, especially a sports car.

Once the two turbos stop spooling up, this engine is a big V6 , not a V12 lambo. I guess the turbos are kicking in pretty strong for acceleration, but when you're going 190 mph, not sure the turbos are still pumping max PSI ... that would be my explanation for a killing fast 0-60 and a top speed that doesn't seem to match the accelaration times!

yes, and the other 50000 are called GT-RS.

You are right about the insurance. I reconsider. It ws dumb.

I stand by the statement regarding gearing. Specifically, the fact that Nissans selection of specific gearing has to do with many many factors and not just 0-60 times. At 190 mph it may not make enough power to push it any faster without further modification. As far as insurance goes, you are right, that was a dumb thought.

A great car, and fun to drive I bet. The performance numbers are very fast. Remember though that the 0-60 time is very quick due to AWD. As far as the 192mph top end, AWD is just dead weight and parasitic loss when doing top end speed runs. If it was RWD it may pass 200mph but 0-60 would be in the 4's. The fact that it can make these numbers at a 3800lb. curb weight is impressive.

Nasty looking car. Plus it does not come with a PROPER standard/manual shifter. Would not pay $70K even if I had the money.
The GT-R's of yonder are way better. The only thing I like about this car is the instrument cluster. Love those digital guages.

top speed is brought about by gearing, power (max and gross) aero, and tire size (although tire size and gearing go hand in hand). the car might have the look for it, but you also have ot remember that downforce and drag comes into play over 100mph. there is 4 time as much force on the car at 200 as there is at 100. so there is quadruple the force on the car at 96 as there is at top speed.
as for this stupid comment
"...that would be my explanation for a killing fast 0-60 and a top speed that doesn't seem to match the accelaration times!"
the new zo6, viper and new 911 turbo looks to offer the similar performance. 0-60 and top speed arent really related. thats why the 2 american cars have 2 overdrives with the 1st 4 gears spaced closer together.

To Kingsley: you are one of those guys who still thinks the old Jags look better than any other car out there right?
Grow up and gain some sense of style. Car's styling changes to meet the audiences, and obviously you are on the outside looking in.
Its a good looking car and considering that we all knew it was going to have to be a love it or hate it car anyway, this is pretty damn good all around.

"Plus it does not come with a PROPER standard/manual shifter"
...Seriously? Did you bother checking out what this car's transmission can do? I'd LOVE you see you shift as fast, smooth, and safe as a dual-clutch transmission, Sport mode or no sport mode.
I love the stick on my 300ZX, but if I were pushing as much power as the GT-R and wanted to push it properly, I'd love a dual-clutch. Besides, for Nissan's fastest, most powerful production car, wouldn't they want the best shifting, fastest shifting, most efficient transmission available?
Again, I don't care who you are, it's next to impossible to sucessfully and smoothly shift through 6 gears w/ a .2 second gap, and continue doing so for the life of the car.
