The Toyota Celica was killed back in 2005, but according to Toyota's German Chief Markus Schrick, the car is set to make a return.
Unfortunately the Celica is only going to return to the European market in 2009. Although it could come to the US eventually. It's unknown what shape this new Celica will take and if it will be revived as a low-cost RWD coupe.
Toyota currently lacks a sports model in its lineup, so lets hope that Toyota is planning on fixing that in the near future.

Those "new Trueno" photos on the Net most likely will become the next "Celica".
RWD, 1.8l engine... light.... turbo model perhaps.
no need for extras, make it as cheap as possible. make an affordable young person's car and Toyota has a winner.

Dear Toyota,
Please don't make a new Celica as lame as the last one.
Dear Honda,
Please don't make a new Integra/Acura RSX as lame as the current one
Dear Mazda,
Please make a proper 2-door rotary sports car again
Dear Nissan,
Please make something like the Silvia/200ZX again (light and quick, not fat and bloated i.e. 350Z)
Dear Mistubishi,
You've never really made a decent 2 door sports car, probably best to keep it that way
Think that's all of them.

If they make a cheap, light, RWD small 4 cylinder turbo, as long as it looks half decent, I would get one. It pisses me off how only the domestics make cheap sporty cars and I can't think of any cheap RWD cars.

To Brad:
The 350Z is not bloated, the 6 speed cars until the HR change and safety updates were 3188, hardly a bloat compared to the dodge anc chrysler offerings closing in on 2 tons. Even the S2000 is close to 2900 lbs and it is about as small of a car as you are going to find. Toyota needs something to fit the sports car nitch of the market, and hasn't had anything since the dissappearance of the Supra in 98'.

"The 350Z is not bloated"
Maybe not bloated, but it could sure lose a couple hundred pounds.
The biggest thing adding to useless weight these days is manufacturers (from all countries) cramming more and more airbags in. You don't need airbags. Really. They've been shown to only be useful in certain specific situations, but other than that they do either A) nothing or B) actually cause harm. I've totaled cars before. Thank god without airbags or I wouldn't have walked away with just some whiplash. I can't imagine totaling a car and not only having the whiplash but the added pain (and possibly broken bones) from getting hit from every conceivable direction by airbags.
I have no problem with the people who are all "OMG I'M GOING TO DIE!!!" all the time having the OPTION of buying useless crap to give themselves the illusion of added safety. However, to force everyone to buy them and not only get worse mpg but to be injured by airbags (and as we all know there have been several deaths from airbags too) is ridiculous.

Carnut57: Yeah but compare those weights to the S13 Silvia which was 2400lbs with 205HP stock. Although admittedly my ideal sports car is something that drifts like a mofo.

The last new ones were not that great in my opinion.
If the do make a new make live up.
The years before i liked, they looked better and were pretty cool, my friend had a 2.2 liter 4banger and that thing was quick for what it could do, 140+mph.

Umm Mitsubishi had a good 2 door sports car once. It was called the Eclipse GSX.
The 350Z is actually quite good by todays standards, not really bloated when you compare it's weight to other cars on the market. Everything is getting heavier these days looking around I get the following for non convertible cars. Corvette weights 3164 lbs, The current 350Z weighs 3339 lbs. A new Mustang is 3483 lbs, Heck a Civic SI weighs in at 2877 and is about as light as anything with any performance bent gets these days, well unless you fit into a Lotus Elise.

I'd rather see the Supra first than the Celica.

I agree with John, Supra before Celica.
And whats with Europe getting good cars first? Is it that the Euro buys so much more now? I remember back when the dollar was still on top it seemed like everything came to the US first, so is it just that?

They should leave the rwd lightweight for a Corolla replacement and bring back the sweet GT4/Alltrac celica model. Hell, use the 6th gen body again, it still looks nice. At least make a 2 door that can outclass the STI or Evo, that would be a nice move...

/agree
Toyota needs a flagship sports car. A new Supra would be great!
As far as an affordable RWD sports coupe, looks like Hyundai is on the ball. Definite test drive on that one.

You can add the 3000GT VR4 to that Mitsubishi list as well.
As far as the new Celica goes, who knows what will happen.

What happened to the 1989-1990 240SX? (yeah yeah, the other 10 years worth were basically the same mechanics, but the first series had the best body style ever)
Lightweight 2+2, CHEAP, bulletproof, 30+mpg on the highway, turned on a dime, and RWD with one of the best suspension setups on any cheap car. Sure, the engine could have pumped out a bit more HP, but they're also 17 years old. BRING IT BACK, NISSAN!!

I'm happy to see the Celica resurface, it sort of quietly slipped off the radar.
A Supra built in today's market would most likely get castrated with a hybrid engine or some other 'green' crap.
I'm still hoping that by some miracle the RSC makes it into the production line, even if only for a limited run.

As far as the Eclipse and 3000gt (read: dodge stealth) are concerned, they aren't that cheap. I'm talking, like a few people above, about cars like the 240sx (1991-93, my favorite).

i agree with everyone lighter is better but one big cost that adds tons of wieght and just increases cost is all those small motors and extras you dont need and i dont even want things like manual windows and the seats that move on their own the onlt thing they do is add wieght increase price and break anywhere from less than a year to 10 years down the line. useless. make a car with no extravagance cheap quick RWD!!!! and good suspension and you have a huge winner that everyone will buy

Dear German Chief Markus Schriek,
Please please PLEASE don't use ANY Subaru parts for the 'new' Celica!~! You will completely ruin your name and reputation as a unique and long lasting car. I have both GT and GT-S models and the GT-S is by far my favorite. I'm a girl but I like just as much out of my car as a guy; fast engine, good gas, nice looks, rare car, and reasonably priced. If this 09 was only made in a manual that would be great, true sports cars are manuals. A turbo could get a bit dangerous for the every day driver with 300hp but if it can get 33mpg on almost every tank like both my cars I'd say to go for it :) The Celica is BY FAR the best car ever made. My dad is a car jocky so I've driven plenty of vehicles and would NEVER get anything other than a Toyota/Scion/Lexus bc they're not as dependable. American made cars suck!~! This car is completely different than the Tiburon. My brother inlaw has that and it's nothing but trouble. I don't know what Toyota does to keep their cars going and in pristine condition but keep on doing it!~! Bring the Celica back, just use your parts!~!
