According to the Los Angeles Times, Nissan is going to start taking orders for the 480 horsepower GT-R on January 1, 2008 and deliveries will start in June 2008.

Nissan is only going to send 1,500 of the GT-R's to the US in its first year and pricing will start at $69,850 and $71,900 for the premium model. You can expect most dealers to add a markup to those prices as well.

RETNIAP:

2 units please!

Travis:

I wonder how long it will take for haters and Corvette fanatics to flood this thread?

Guess what even if it is slower than the similarly priced 'Vette it has 4 seats, and a big trunk, and a much nicer interior with what looks like a leather trimmed dash, and it's got AWD in case it ever rains near where you live. All of that adds weight, and cost to building this thing. Yet it by all accounts matches a Z06 in performance for about the same cost. Seriously think about that for a bit before you say anything.

Having said that as ugly as the current Corvette with it's Chevy Caviler inspired front styling looks (why oh why gm did you have to beat the C5 with the ugly stick?) This Nissan looks a whole lot worse on the outside.

J.D:

Too bad it is down almost 200 horse on the cheap pushrod FI LS3 in the Vette!!!1!! Hey, you asked for it. ;)

Rafael Fernandes:

@Travis

I was thinking the exacltly same thing. How long before the thread become trash...

Anyway, long ago I realized that discuss against vette fans is the same that discuss religion or politics... so... dont waste your time...

About the news... Its a shame they will bring so few units...

Allen:

@J.D.:

Too bad the ZR1 Vette will cost over $100,000 and insurance will be even higher than on the Z06. And with 6.2L and Supercharging, General Motors is only squeezing 104 hp per liter from the engine. The GT-R is getting 123hp per liter, and if bored and stroked to 4.4 Liters (a serious consideration of some mod shops, I've heard) it could technically produce 544hp total, in addition to having more low end torque where as recent GM pushrod V8s have all the torque develop over 4000rpm.

Hey, you asked for it.

Eric:

@Allen:

GM also took a 2.0L engine and made it produce 260hp, and 260lb-ft. 130hp/L is quite impressive, though if they tried to do that with their bigger engines the cost would be enormous. They'd most like have to make it DOHC with variable valve timing and a bunch of other expensive crap. Not saying it isn't a good way to go, just that right now GM is better off building high hp/L for smaller engines, and leaving the big power to the big-cubed pushrod engines.

Scotty:

If you're spending more than $50K or $60 on a car, and your only concern is how much horsepower you're getting per dollar, than in my personal opinion your car purchasing priorities are rather shallow. But that's also perfectly fair, just not my priorities. If I'm dropping, say, $75K on a car, I'm looking at all sorts of other things, not only HP.

It's tough to beat a corvette in the HP/$ category, and it always will be. One of GM's core market advantages is value, and it always will be. Their 'Vette will always be a (relatively) cheap way to get over 500HP. You can spend 2 or 3 times as much and get fewer horsepower.

So honestly, who cares if you don't get quite as much HP out of a Skyline.

Travis:

I care more about the fact that the new engine will not mod nearly as well as the old one, so no more 1200+ HP Skylines :(, I wonder how many Vettes are out there pushing hard to break into the high 6's in the 1/4.

Mitsubshi gets 295 hp and 300 ftlbs of torque from a 2.0L in the new Evo.

If you're buying a Skyline with the thought of modding it to those extremes, your priorities are not those of the other 99.99% of 'vette or skyline buyers.

True, both cars are cult classics which people like to mod, but on the flip side of the coin, fewer than a handful of people are going to mod them to put out that amount of ponies. I'm sure it's possible to add a few hundred HP to the Skyline, but again, if you're going to those extremes, you represent the significant minority, even with a car which 'so many' people mod. But hey, everyone has their own priorities and that's what makes cars so fun and interesting.

I suppose the Skyline owes a certain something to the cult community. But I'm sure it wont be long until you see disgusting HP numbers out of the car.

@Travis:

While this is not the inline 6 of the past genrations,Nissan has had a history of overengineering their engines. I have no doubt that speed shops are already devising ways to extract more power from the engine and foresee easy 600-700hp engines soon.

Kell:

As I said before: Excellent car, but heavy at 3800lbs compared to other cars in it's (perceived) class. Personally, I don't think comparing it to a Corvette is fair to the GT-R. It's autobahn coupe vs. slice-n-dice with a back seat. Different priorities.

Justin:

People on this site need to educate themselves before they type, especially the anti-domestics on here. First of all Travis and Allen. Travis acting like he is waiting for the GTR haters to start flaming this thread, and already starts a war with his biased comment, so your input is taken as a grain of salt. Allen, what on earth are you talking about more torque? There is no way on heavens earth a DOHC 3.8 V6 will EVER make more torque than any LS series GM motor, let alone the ls7 or 9... The ls7 does not drop below 300ft lbs of torque in it's entire band. And for all the biased morons out there, the pushrod (OHV) was developed after the OHC. A pushrod motor has a flatter torque curve, and makes more HP per pound yes that means more than HP/Liter which is a stupid concept with no bearing. It's also smaller and cheaper to make and cheaper to modify. Since the introduction of roller cams and rockers they can turn high RPMs as well, but they don't need to because they have a flat torque curve which means they are efficient.

Justin:

Also, old import motors like the RB26 and 2JZ came with forged internals and an iron block from the factory, which is why you could get so much HP out of them. Manufacturers don't do this anymore because it's not necessary and it costs too much. But at the time it was the only way they knew how to do it and be reliable. There was no advanced technology to those motors. Now days, most motors are aluminum because they are lighter which makes them more fuel efficient, but you can't get as much HP out of an aluminum block, on top of that now days the internals are always cast. I don't know what the 3.8 in the new skyline will have, but if it's not as flexible as the old rb series then thats why.

nissandealer:

I dont know where this information came from. There will be no orders. Whatever Nissan dealership wants to sell The GTR has to buy 25k worth of equipment and pay 25k just to sell it. The GM is the only salesperson, the service manager is the only advisor, and there is only going to be 1 service tech certified to work on the car. There is no ordering process.

nate:

ok, peak torque does not mean it produces all its torque after that. a turbo 3.8 v6 will no way in hell make more toque than a supercharged 6.2 v8. it doesnt have the displacement and a supercharger (roots-type) are noted for the ability to make power right off idle.
then you wanna flame corvettes for not going into the 6s. you need to think about that for a second before running it. give respect where its due, the gt 5.0 was the greatest thing to happen to the aftermarket, the domestic muscle cars were pushing 6s long before some overpowered import that needs extra power to push its overweight ass to a fast time. we had 10.5 cars running 6s a few years ago. no import in sight. rules and regs ruin the imports chance since they are so far overweight.

dennisil:

the nissan can lap the nuerinbug in germany faster than a Z06, even faster than a konigsegg even faster than a turbo 911, or a zonda... and thats all i care about, straight line races are for cameros and srt4's.
