The all-new 2008 Honda Fit, which is a newer version of what we have here in the US, just went on sale late last month in Japan. The all-new model has just received Japan's Car of the Year award.
The new 2008 Honda Fit is powered by either a 1.3L 98 horsepower engine or a 1.5L 118 horsepower engine in the Road Sailing (RS) version.
The Car of the Year award is decided on by 60 automotive journalists. The new Fit beat out Nissan's new Skyline and the new Subaru Impreza. Last year the Lexus LS sedan won the award.
Consumers also apparently love the new Fit since Honda sold over 20,000 units in the first two weeks the Fit was on sale. Honda originally planned on only selling 12,000 Fits a month.
The US is expected to get the all-new Fit late next year as a 2009 model.

Man.. this car is so ugly.. car of the year? who's smoking what?
I'm sure it's a good car but come on guys.. side windows cut into 4 sections with awkward black pieces seperating them.. head lights in a weird position.. ugly tail end.. the whole car looks retarded.
In comparison, my company has a fleet of hyundai accent hatches.. and while they are not the best looking small hatch, the exterior looks a lot better than these. I would buy the hyundai over the honda, honestly. ( even considering hyundai's bad, but improving reputation )
I really hope the USDM version doesn't look so goofy.
How 'bout a 2 door version that doesn't look like ass? thanks.

isnt that the jazz in europe? to me it looks just like it. i think the accord and civic look better (although honda's styling lately has been quite strange) but i guess this fills some slot somewhere.

@Andri:
The Honda Fit is the US market version of the Jazz sold elsewhere.

This car fits nicely in the slot of a hatchback small car.
Hatchbacks are very versatile in the City and other places where SUVs do not make sense.
The swivel front seats are also pretty cool as an option.

If you want a smart looking car, buy an Aston Martin or an Alfa Romeo. This car is small, comfortable, fuel efficient and safe, and it offers an amazing amount of flexible storage space. You don't buy a Fit/Jazz to boost your image, but to get the best and most reliable car for your money.

Well not as bad as what Carsguide put car of the year here in Australia. The Hyundai i30 WTF! oh to make it worse 1.6L turbo diesel. Um I don't know if you get the i30 in the US but it is the hatch version of the Elantra. It is a whole heap better then the Sedan though because it was aimed at Europe.
I thought I saw some Jap car award won by the Mazda2. Guess they have multiple car of the year awards like we do.
Now this Jazz. Yuck. I can't belive they made it bigger to start with. Light cars as they are called here are generlly smaller then the old model Jazz to begin with. Yet they make this one bigger. Guess they are trying to get more sales in the US then. But seriosly I'd have to say this is almost bigger then the Civic Hatch(which youse don't get). So the Jazz is basically Hondas low qaulity small car and the Civic Sedan better, and then the hatch the high qaulity one.
I though the award would go to Lancer, but that is more favourble to people who like some muscle in their car.

I HATE the looks of this car - it looks like a hideous micro-van got beat with the ugly stick a few extra times.
With that said, I have to say that this sounds like one helluva car. For those bashing it to pieces based simply on looks, a few words:
1. This isnt THE ugliest car, just close ;-)
2. Sometimes you just have to look past the "ugh" factor
3. Before reading reviews and other hands-on articles, take a quick look at the specs and available options vs. price - this is one hell of a people mover at a great price.
Great fuel economy, 118 HP from a 1.5L N/A is pretty amazing, very roomy interior, extremely comfortable ride with great handling characteristics, and MAN talk about a sunroof! (Nobody can pass up a full moonroof top!)
After reading the reviews, before I buy my xD or Yaris, I'm going to have to check this car out. This would be the UGLIEST car I've ever owned if I did purchase one, but it's hard to ignore the great press, specs, and price.

I actually drove one for a day (the current model) while my Civic Coupe was serviced, and was surprised by how good it was. I was considering buying it, but will probably wait for the 2008/2009 model. Most people tend to ignore it until they get a chance to drive it, or meet someone who owns one.

Sometimes the best cars are an implementation of function over form.

Ugly, but less so then the current one and way better then the Toyota Yaris. I am planning to buy one when it gets here in 2009.

I agree that cars in this league will not win beauty contests. But like many others, I have a long commute and small family. The current Fit has great features, practicality, and as a bonus is a fun car to drive. The new model is slightly larger and more powerful, but still retains the same mission as the first model. I definitely will keep this on my list

the yaris is much much much uglier than this vehicle, and not nearly as versatile with it's available cargo space.
thumbs up fit/jazz

I think the yaris looks tons better, and it is actually a very comfortable car with good handling characteristics - but the interior is lacking (on the US version), and there's no CVT :-(
The interior space is a lot better on the Honda, though. The Yaris/xD have sliding rear seats, but when you need the extra rear space bad enough to scoot the seats up, you've made the seats next to impossible to sit in, so you might as well just fold the damn things down (unless you need the seat as a support).

Can't believe people are worrying about what it looks like with no comment on performance.
It looks fine to me, but if it didn't, who cares what it freakin’ looks like?! It's what it does that matters and how much it does it for.
Tom's Hardware is always making the point of the imortance of price/performance per unit energy. This is a good way to buy pretty much anything. Cars included.
It's common sense like that which made Tom's what it is. And that's why some people visit.
If the new car does a good job, efficiently, for little money, then it is clearly a step in the right direction. Bring it on.
Anything that takes some pick-ups, SUV's etc off the roads is good news. The sight of bumper-bumper SUVs in cities does little to make anyone with a brain/conscience happy. Seeing this succeed on the other hand can make you feel good that important changes are starting to happen. We can all help to keep it moving by always demanding more from a price/performance/efficiency POV and by forgetting about subjective irrelevant BS like what our egos tell us it looks like and thinking about what it does, how much it costs to do it...

I can agree when someone says that the car of the year is the 09 Malibu, Infiniti G, 09 CTS, or the Accord. But I can't agree with anyone who suggests that the FIT is a fantastic car. I've driven this car, and I really don't get why people think it's so wonderful. It looks ridiculous and it drives like it has a mousewheel engine from a 1990 Geo Metro. Load it up with four adults and it's downright unstable. The interior is quite nice for an economy car and contrasts with the disposable feel of everything else. The FIT is purely for contrarians who need an occasional errand vehicle and want something quirky. Spend a bit more and get a Mini or an A3... much more substantial cars.

What's the point of comparing this car with models 50% more expensive? If I want to spend that much, I can think of so many more options...

hyundai?? You're kidding me. They are crap, look like crap, run like crap and you want to compare them with the Fit? Go ahead and buy your hyundai means there will be a Fit for me to buy.

What kind of auto transmission will it have? My Honda service guy says they are dropping the CVT due to problems, but I see it listed in the US and European drive reports.
