The source who spoke with Bob Lutz quoted the exec as saying that the Volt will not look like the concept due to wind tunnel testing, which has proven that the Volt can get better gas mileage if it is a different shape. Lutz told the media last week that the Volt should be on sale by November 2010. Pricing is expected to start at less than $30,000 and GM is hoping to sell 60,000 units in its first year.

In its current design it does not look like GM could have sold this car for under $30k. They will need to make the car look more conservitive.
Market research also might have played a role in changing the design.

Chevy must have thaught they had a winner here and rather than produce theis sleek looking car they chose to refine the cup holders on a Chevy Aveo, geez GM needs to let the accountants out to smell the roses. they are killing this company, how about a car for the people chevy???

Sounds like a bad move to me, that think looks good. I was seriously thinking about getting on of them out when they're available. Now I'm sure Chevy will manage to F up the design.

Of course it would not look like the concept. It will look like a chevy in the end...which is why no one will buy it.
IMO, I do not think Chevy really WANTS to sell the volt. If history is any indication, Chevy resists any changes and continues business as usual despite turning market trends and demands.
Although, truthfully I hope I am wrong and Chevy does put their might behind an increasing obvious electrically powered future.

I'm guessing Chevy is playing it safe and waiting for other car makers to enter this market.
As a result, they will then enter an already saturated market with (by that time) outdated technology and a bland, designed by committee looking shape, guaranteeing a year or two of money losing production and a canceled model line.
They need to get this out now, work the bugs out on the early adopters (who'll be happy to get it) and then ramp up production, thus getting into the juicy part of the developing market.
But... 2010... ah well.

2010 will put them almost exactly ten years behind Toyota in producing a decent hybrid...sounds about right.

Will not look like the concept hey.......
Hmmmmmm.....
Well that was money well spent.
They could have spent the money on improving the quality of their cup holders or something.

Another magazine reported that the volt would be based on the Cobalt chassis and would be marketed as a Cadillac. So it really is no surprise that it would look like the concept. Hopefully, so design cues will carryover in the new model.

If Chevy makes this car right, and with enough range, it could actually preempt hybrid technology and make it obsolete. I'm sure that's their plan, and it could actually work. Kudos to Chevy for even trying. One thing: Faster!!
