PRESS RELEASE

In another world premiere for the Australian International Motor Show, Volkswagen has announced it will unveil its new Touareg R50 in Sydney next week (11 October). Developed by a team of specialists at Volkswagen Individual GmbH, the Touareg R50 is one of the most powerful SUVs in the world. While Volkswagen has yet to announce detailed specifications, it promises the R50 boasts "generous" increases on the 230kW of power and 750Nm of torque produced by the current V10 TDi model on which it is based. Bigger wheels and tyres and tweaked suspension complete the high-performance package. Volkswagen Individual GmbH has also designed new exterior and interior features to reflect the R philosophy.

The R50 is the third model to appear under Volkswagen's sporty R label, following in the footsteps of the Golf R32 and the new Passat R36 - which was launched last month at the Frankfurt motor show. All three models have 4MOTION all-wheel drive to guarantee optimal traction.

wes:

Maybe they should release a new high reliability rated VW vehicle in general. Just what we need, a SUV that is "high performance" just so the vehicle breaks down faster than the others.

Cough.....Cough......

I am so glad that this web site is on the ball.
Has anyone checked out the Turbo Ford Territory on the Ford Australia site?
328 HP from a 6 cylinder petrol engine. Torque will never be the same as a V10 Diesel but is still excellent.
Ford has not even released a FPV version yet. When they do HP will be close to nudging the 400 mark.

Please consider the price difference between the 2 vehicles and you will see what the US is missing out on again.

svt:

those numbers suggest a diesel. why would VW release an SUV with such a claim when there are monsters like Porsche Cayenne?
and isn't the whole point of a diesel engine its torque useful for towing? So those low profile tires would not be good for any high payloads...

Staedler and Waldorff:

TDI kind-off means Turbo Diesel Intercooler.

zippy:

Turbodiesel-Direct-Injection

I'd imagine, with all that low-end torque and 4-motion that this thing will take off pretty good from the line.

Also, it'll probably achieve about 25-30 mpg too.

rene:

well, my first Golf was a Golf-D. It was a Diesel, not a 'Direct'.
My 2nd Golf was a TD. The dealer told me it had a Turbo.

And according to my text books, all diesels are injection. Either Direct or Indirect.

zippy:

All of VW literature here states TDI stands for Turbocharged-Direct-Injection.

something about hitler too, but I forget.
