Volkswagen is going to recall 340,000 Mexican made Jettas and Rabbits that were sold in the US due to a headlamp defect.

The recall concerns the rubber caps that could be missing from the horizontal and vertical headlight alignment screws. According to a VW spokesperson this defect does not pose a danger to drivers and starting today owners can have their vehicles fixed at their local Volkswagen dealer.

Gary:

This doesn't really help them with over taking Toyota in sales, now does it?

CS:

They need to have a recall on the intake manifold runner control motor as well. My car is brand new and the stupid check engine light stays on due to an intake manifold runner control motor problem. I've been waiting 3 months now and the dealer keeps telling me they have no idea when the new part is going to come in. This is not what I expect out of a $28,000 european sedan. So if you are listening VW, fix your damn quality control, fix my car and everyone else's car that has problems.

Alex Greene:

I think a move to save money on labour has backfired for VW. The quality control is one thing, another thing is quite a few people wouldn't buy it just because it is made in Mexico using dirt-cheap workforce. This is *NOT* a european sedan.

longdxcommuter:

Rabbits are made in Germany, while Jettas are made in the Mexico plant. However, while it seems rather an annoyance than a safety issue. I agree with CS that VW needs to upgrade their reliability. They make appealing cars, but I avoid them like the plague due to horror stories from friends about poor quality and ambivalent dealers.

Alex,

Well, VW is losing tons of money in the US market. The only choice they really have is to build plants in the US or to just stop selling VW's here. With the weakening dollar shipping them from Europe will cost to much to the American consumer.

I almost made the mistake of buying a VW, I changed my mind after I did some research on vehicle reliability.

Eddie:

so are these the VW's that are built in Mexico, or China? I dont own a VW myself personally, but I know some who do.
I also like the mouse cursor that is in the middle of the picture... maybe VW needs to have another recall and fix that problem as well

Trooper Bri:

That's a pretty wimpy recall actually. Not sure why it got focused upon. Didn't Toyota or Honda just have a big one ??

More and more auto makers are opening plants in the US. This is due to states offering great incentives to automakers. Plus we have a far more educated workforce than a lot of these global facilities. That includes specialty trades from other industries that are receding here in the states.

Blessedly, a unionized workforce is not allowed at most of them. This is giving working Americans an alternative as Detroit struggles with it's problems of dealing with an old way of life that has for the most part moved on.

I also enjoy doing automotive glass replacement. I must say that the VW/Audi/Porsche are by far my favorite. Very good install and choice of products they use. A rare occasion to find one that the windshield robots had a bad day with. Driving them isn't so bad either. ;)

Boogster:

Why did you add a cursor on the image? Anyway, I do think that owners HAD to either recall them or just wash the defects off to make it look shiny again.

rene:

well gary, they still have 9 years and 11 months left to catch-up with Toyo...

Steadler and Waldorff:

that's a lot of holes
