More Details on the Upcoming MINI SUV

The MINI Clubman is the big news for MINI this year (pictured above), but MINI has something else in the works. We've already discussed earlier this year the possibility of a new MINI SUV (or SAV as BMW likes to label their crossovers) as the fourth MINI model. Well now more details on the upcoming MINI SAV have surfaced.

The new MINI SAV codenamed Colorado is going to enter production by the end of 2010 and is going to be built by Magna Steyr who currently builds the BMW X3 crossover (the next-gen X3 will be built in the US). About 80,000 of the new "go anywhere" MINIs will be produced.

The MINI SAV will also share its platform with the upcoming BMW X1 SAV.

So this Mini will be a Maxi?

I envision something that will look similar to a reduced Porsche SUV.

SVT:

Oxymoron, definition: MINI SUV

rene:

just thinking a-loud. Wonder how far you can stretch the Mini identity (design, branding, the whole lot). And should you stretch it towards Utility?
And will that be the logical next step for the demographic that bought the 1st/2nd gen Mini?

Personally, i would keep the Mini 'personal transport', not 'family transport' and evolve that further.

Dan:

Because the market isn't already saturated with SUVs and Crossovers (read: Crossover = WAGON)...

Morons...Stick to small, practical, fun cars.

Looks like Mini is becoming the new Maxi. Disgusting.

longdxcommuter:

Mini is a niche company that trades on the reputation of a classic Britich design. I would like to have the company stay focused on serving that niche. The Clubman is a good extention. I would actually like to see Mini offer a bare basics model, slotted below its current base. (Steel wheels, manual windows so that the base price is even lower) I will add wheels myself (a newer version of Superlight wheels thankyou) and can live with manual windows on such a tiny car. MIni should always be geared to the enthusiast. There is already a glut in compact SUV's.
