2009 Dodge Challenger Revealed Thanks to a Great Camera Phone

08challenger4.jpg
The upcoming 2008/2009 Dodge Challenger has been incredibly popular thanks to the camera phone. Even the great Brenda Priddy hasn't managed to produce as many photos as all the guys running around with their camera phones. Now we have the first photos of the production version thanks to another guy who just happened to have his phone handy.

Last week Chrysler unveiled the all-new Dodge Challenger to dealers in Las Vegas. Although the automaker probably tried to ban all camera equipment from the event, someone must have forgot that many of our phones are equipped with handy little cameras. OntarioStreetCar.com has posted a few photos of the car that were taken with someone's camera phone.

The car looks very close to the concept version and the only visible changes are the addition of the B pillar, a small lip spoiler on the SRT-8 and an extended rear bumper.

According to OntarioStreetCar.com the first Challengers will arrive in March as 2008 models. These first Challengers (5500 of them) will be all be 6.1L SRT8s equipped with automatic transmissions priced at $38,000. in July 2008 the MY09 Challengers will arrive with the 3.5L V6, a regular 5.7L HEMI and the 6.1L SRT-8. The 90' Challengers with the HEMI engines will have an optional 6-speed manual.

The car will officially be unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show this winter.

HaZ:

Personally, I think it's fugly.

get real, this isn't the 60s, or the 70s,

Polynikes:

I think it's beautiful. Much like the new Mustang, this car captures the classic muscle car lines. You probably don't like the styling of old muscle cars, but this car wasn't designed for people like you, so you can turn your nose up all you want.

Too bad the Charger got so fucked up. I hope Dodge fixes that shit.

SEALBoy:

This car doesn't look too bad, but IMO the Mustang and new Camaro demonstrate a much better blend of old and new...

Gary:

And another "Sports" car coming out with no Manual option at first, what has the world come to?!?!?

Robb:

I'm sure it would've been a nice car back in '63. I would rather go with a sleek japanese design. This one is definetely fugly.

wes:

I really like it, along with the Camaro style and the new Mustang. I am pretty sure you would actually need to like muscle cars in order to like the way any of the newer cars look. I for one would rather own a classic muscle car than a new Ferrari or something of that Caliber.

jeremy:

I like it a lot. Makes me happy in pants. I would buy one and run over the people who say they dont like it only because thats what you do with muscle cars. RUN PEOPLE OVER...LIKE YOURSELF. WHITE POWER

sorry about all the posts. not my fault...im not racist either. love you all...especially whites.

Chris:

^ Thanks for propagating the hick stereotype that is associated with any nice American car on this website jackass.

It looks nice. It fits in with the new Mustang and the Camaro concept. I would not buy one since it would be a gas hog.

I prefer little cars like the Obvio 828, Mini Cooper or the Smart Fortwo. These are my kind of cars.

As they say, to each their own.

Green Power. :)

wes:

Chris,

I do believe he is trying to make fun of anyone who likes this car by insinuating they are hicks. The guy is obviously an idiot, and has his own problems that he will eventually have to deal with.

I am not a racist either. Love you all not matter what color you are.

Mike M:

I have mixed thoughts on this car. To me this car looks too old-fashioned. It doesn't look a whole lot different than most of the custom cars you see now, nice wheels and paint job, new chassis, crate motor, and refurbished muscle car body. I don't have a whole lot of issues with the styling of the new Camaro or Mustang, however....like someone mentioned earlier they blended the old with the new. I still wouldn't get any, though, because the quality isn't there (my brother's Mustang GT rides poorly and rattles like crazy). I'll stick to Japanese or European cars for as long as I can afford it.

Kevin:

Just like i've always said..."retro" means you are supposed to evoke the old with the new, not copy the old with the new. That looks no different than a restored pro touring classic challenger. It's an virtually an exact copy in every way. So yeah it doesn't look bad, but the upcoming Camaro SS and current GT500 put it to shame in the styling department.

kw:

To me it looks good in pictures. Have to see it in real life to be sure.

Not surprised it doesn't appeal to the current tuner crowd. Nothing wrong with that on either hand. It's a big world with lots of room for people with different tastes.

Chris:

Agreed, need to see it in person. It looks thicker or more fat than it's supposed too... like from rocker panels to the window sill is very tall and fat compared to the windows, and there is too much vertical in the front.

It needs a blacked out diffuser or chrome bumper or something in the front and back, otherwise it looks like a fat brick and doesn't have the slender look it should.

Take a look at what the '03 Cobra rear bumper looks like compared to a regular Mustang; it uses a 2pc bumper with a black cutout and you'd be surprised at just how much better it looks.

I am a big hater of large, esp. tall 1 pc molded bumper covers, very cheap looking.

Allen:

All I have to say is that it better have optional high tech equipment like Bluetooth, sat-nav and such. I can see a select group of people who buy this meerly for nostalgia, but if it had a few everyday-friendly options it'd make it much more attractive for people looking to get a coupe for everyday use.

Myself, I prefer sedans (sporty ones), and Bluetooth is a must for me. I'm one hands-free OG, know what I mean? (sorry about that last sentence, but ever since I heard someone say that on the radio, I cannot help but laugh at it)

Biil Owens:

Good old Detroit. Big on the outside small on the inside and uses gas like it were a renewable resource. If it was 20 grand at least you could afford to buy gas for it. But then again once you drive it off the car lot it will be 20 grand.

SVT:

aigh't anyone else besides Americans should not comment on this. this car is gonna be only sold only here, in states, i don't know why others bitch about it here. I don't mind the retro look but if it gulps gas retro style, if it handles retro style it should go straight from assembly line to a museum, we need modern suspensions and cars not weighting 2 tons that need ridiculous engines to propel them...

@Robb
"sleek Japanese design"? yea they have been stealing Mercedes Benz, BMW and other European manufacturer's lines for years.

@HaZ
it isn't the seventies but it should be. cars were better ( i really think that), music was better, noone was bothered by cellphones and there weren't as many weirdos and fat bastards running (and puffing) around

XFireSRT:

Boy racers and Euro-snobs.... much like the Charger, you kids wouldn't pony up the money to buy them even if they were a carbon copy of the originals. These cars are built for people who appreciate the heritage, or more specifically, lived through the times. I'm 26, way out of Chrysler LLC's target audience, and I think it’s fantastic.

Oh, and to those who bitch about the lack of manual initially... all the REAL muscle cars were better with the automatic tranny. Stop thinking about your anaemic, no-torque, 4 cylinder engines.

If you REALLY need the manual, wait the 3-4 months, and get one then. You'll probably also avoid the massive dealer markup that way too.

And before I get sh@@ on for my post... I love all cars, American, Jap, German, Euro whatever. Can't you just accept that some people PREFER something that you don't? Fanboy'ism is all I see on these posts.

longdxcommuter:

The new Challenger does capture the lines from the original. I agree with the earlier port that the Mustang and upcoming Camaro are better executed. Most people remember musclecars fondly, but they were in essence pedestrian vehicles with bigger engines. They went fast, but stopped and handled poorly. The Challenger IMO was always too big and ungainly , whereas the Mustang and Camaro (especially 67-69) had well proportioned lines. The newer models do them justice.

butt ugly. of course, being a dodge, at least they won't last long on the road. i hate to think of them uglying-up the junkyards tho.

Owen:

I saw the side view of the car and I had a Baracuda flashback. It looks a lot like my dads old ride. I hate the color though.

unknown:

Thank gawd there bringing back the pony cars it has a v6 option I bet this car will be hawt in real life as well. I like the fact that they kept the v6 option so it will be affordable to many people and not just some mag racer that all these other new cars are.

Rene:

None of the retro's did really well (except for Mini), so GM thinks its a good idea.
Recycling America's past. Well, Irak is like Vietname, and Bush almost but not quite like Nixon.

Ken:

one word, fugly, reminds me of something you would see in a scrapyard, except with a nice paint job and rims thats it

Darmok:

"None of the retro's did really well (except for Mini), so GM thinks its a good idea."

This is not a GM car. Also, your comments about a war might mean a little more if you knew how to spell the name of the countries involved.

Chryslers PT Cruiser is retro and doing well. GM's HHR is retro and doing well. (IIRC). The Mini Cooper is really doing well. Ford's Mustang is doing very well. I think Chevrolet's Camaro concept will do very well, too. Retro does sell if done right.

WK:

All I can say is this car is as ugly as ugly can be. Whoever designed this should be fired. For god's sake, it's freaking 21st century now, it's not the 1960's/70's.

Gary:

Anyone that says this car is ugly, fugly, or any other variation of the word is a crack smoking idiot. Probably a honda loving retard with a sewer pipe exhaust on there POS 80 hp car.

This is a beautiful car, that will no doubt smoke just about anything that comes over here from Japan.

PS, my daily driver is a Honda Accord. Awesome car. I am nowhere near japanese hater, but when it comes to performance, there really is "no replacement for displacement". Toyota has finally learned that with the engine offerings its placing in the Tundra lineup.

Don:

What you people obviously fail to see is that there is a market for retro, well anything.

And to be honest, I think its a good thing, people have different tastes, if you dont like it, well I know you will not buy it. But the fact remains some will buy it, just like the new mustang. And to be totally honest, I think its nice to see this car, but imho its not far enough from its original body style to be a new retro thing, it looks a bit too similar to the old styling. Especially from the camera phones blurry shots if it was not for the lights and the rims it could be mistaken as a 70s version. But I do like the car.

For those of you who are like its fugly I am more of a japanese car fanboi you can just keep your comments to yourselves there. Those cars never will be a true muscle car no matter how loud you make the exhaust, or how much nitrious you pump through them.

There are very few *real* gear heads out that that take a plain vanilla anything and actually truly modify the engines in these things. Its one thing to a plain model car and completely modify every point of the drive train and come out with a monster, its another thing to buy a WRX, put a fat muffler on it and CAI on it and call it muscle. It already came stock 260HP morons.

You bring a WRX or honda civix that was modded by the owner and has 475HP 500Trq full time not with nitrous and then you can have some props from the real muscle cars guys.

My 69 429SCJ naturally aspirated Cougar puts all those little street racers to shame =P

1. I like the retro-aggressive appearance that links the new Challenger to the menacing old Challengers. Ford, Chevrolet and Dodge got it right. OTOH, Pontiac failed with their GTO because it looked like a frigging Nissan Altima. Had they gone retro, they'd still be making them.

2. Automatic trannies are for wusses. They put automatics into these cars so that any idiot can drive them- and still sip their lattes, put on their makeup, talk on their cell phones, read their newspapers, etc. They put stickshifts into cars that are driven by people who want to drive the frigging car. If you fear the power, buy a flippin' SmartCar.

3. I bought a 2007 Mustang with the Pony package and a custom leather interior. I bought it because it was 10K cheaper than the base V8 model. I am frankly thrilled with my choice. I immediately replaced the tame stock muffler with a Magnaflow, and my car now has the menacing rumble of a smallblock V8. While certainly not a street racer, the car still has excellent pickup, snappy handling, stiff, stable suspension, and the wonderfully-aggressive retro-look. And it's a stickshift, to boot. For Christmas, I'm adding a cool-air intake. Still won't beat many cars off the line, but I'll be happy.

But the Challenger definitely has my attention.

John:

I think Dodge spent too much time on the athletics of the car. I hope it handles well, especially since its 38,000.

rene:

@darmok,

oops, sorry for typo apologies.

Must have been distracted by the rumour of the new Ford Pinto.

stromm:

There's nothing wrong with Auto, at least American autos, in an American muscle car.

I say this from experience. I am 38 and have had quite a few cars from a 1969 Camaro I found in a barn (inline 6, 2 speed) which I tore down and built up with a 380hp/400ftlpbtq 307 and a Turbo 350 Auto. I ate stick boys for lunch and didn't have to worry about shifting. Currently, I own a 1994 ImpalaSS putting out 300hp/350tq to the rear wheels. I have thought about going six-speed (pretty cheap at about $2000 as a DIY), but honestly, I really like that I don't have to worry about shifting.

American transmissions are built to handle tons of hp/tq. American engines are designed to handle high hp/tq without needed suppliments.

It's not a muscle car if it needs steroids. NOS, Turbo, SuperChargers are the equiv of steroids.

Now all that said, if fuel here hits $5us/gal I'm selling my beloved SS and buying a Venture1. It won't matter if it's gas or some other liquid fuel, you just know the "fuel" companies will screw everyone with high prices since the think we're already ok with paying that much anyways. Not to mention, the push for using farm based fuels are causing our food prices to skyrocket since the animal farmers are now paying twice as much for feed as they were last year.

Tommy Boy:

The Challenger is cool and all, but I wish they had brot back the Cuda insted.

Tommy boy:

I agree with you tmike, the junkyard is more of a place for something like a Honda or Smart. I don't blame you for being scared of this beast of a car, and I'm sure you want it off the road ASAP to make it safer for you and your....... um...... thing you drive.

Tommy Boy:

Man, if only I found this web sight two months sooner. So far nothing, no ricers talking shit, no hippies telling me "cars like these are the center of all prodlams", not even a Ero-snob calling me I'm a rad neck hick. (sigh) Well, at least I've got one hell of a car to look at while I wait.

Tommy Boy:

Sorry, I was in a rush.

kowalskii:
