It's still up in the air if Honda is ever going to release an all-new S2000, but that isn't stopping the automaker from releasing special versions of the current car.
Honda has just released the S2000 Type S for the Japanese market which is very close to the S2000 CR that we are getting on these shores.
Both the S2000 Type S and S2000 CR come with stiffer suspensions, a new aerodynamic body kit, a massive rear wing and unique 17" inch wheels. There are only two differences between the cars. First the S2000 CR's suspension is calibrated more for the track while the suspension on the Type S is more geared for the fast winding in Japan. Therefore the suspension rates on the Type S are a little softer compared to those on the CR. The second difference between the two cars is that the CR has a removable aluminum hardtop and the Type S does not.
The S2000 Type S and S2000 CR both have the same high-revving 2.2L 237 hp four cylinder engine.

Yaaaaaawnnnn!! oh sorry :)
I meant to say, I like Honda, but this car is just junk.
Honda has more than made up on this car's R&D. If they really want to impress me, use that long nose on the car to cram a V6 300HP engine in there with 7 speed manual transmission. I know the car is light, but all the extra nose space is just a waste.

The Prelude had a Type S(well, SH here in the States) badge before it was retired....

It's a gorgeous corner carver, albeit a little overpriced and underpowered (read: torque). but then again, a driver's car is nothing without fantastic suspension dynamics and brakes. at least the groundwork is present.
i likey!

Wow, that thing is over the top boy racer! They should have gone a little less extreme with the wing and front spoiler.

Lol....I was at a Honda dealership a year ago and the general manager and I were talking. He said the models Element and S2000 were his slowest selling vehicles. He kept shaking his head saying, "Honda REALLY needs to come out with a new version of the S2000."
Yes the car is great on a track, great handling, but when you sit in it feels very old and outdated. It literally feels as though it's a mid 1990s car.

Wow just wow all I can say is they ruined that car by adding that huge wing on it, thats something a 16 yo kid would do when he couldnt afford to make the car faster. This car is a great handling car its power doesnt match that and thats what makes it fail it needs more torque like a 2.4 or 2.6l would be a bit better.

The S2000 needs an update badly. The interior and exterior just look so dam OLD. If they updated it with a 2.2L turbo engine, it would be sweet.

What is with the import car makers and those god-awful rear wings? That is about the ugliest thing I have seen on the back of an otherwise decent looking car.

The CR is basicly a track version of the car. the front and rear spoiler are both fully functional. this car was built to turn not go fast in a straight line. you dont need a huge engine to turn. the whole idea of the S2000 is a well balanced car. look up track times with this car it holds up with alot of sports cars for alot less money. "a V6 300hp" hhmmm well if yoru going to add 2 more cylenders why dont you get a little more power? and why does it need to be a "v6" why not an inline 6? the fact is it doesnt need any more power.

I mean seriously. My ALTIMA makes 15hp more than the S2000. No, I won't win on a track, but how many S2000 drivers autocross every weekend. I bet more take them to a drag strip than a racetrack. The car totally needs an acura turbo motor slammed up front and get some excitement generated from this car again. I don't know about you but 8,000 rpm and no torque sorta reminds me of an RX8.......... I come from owning a 91' DSM AWD for 10 years so I guess driving that car would just be a letdown for me cause I love the push of a torque monster ;-).

Honda is probably in the works for a total re-imagining of this car. When it premiered it was flat out incredible, and they probably do not want to bring it again unless they can get the same response.
I've heard that Honda has had a few inline 6 engines being moved in and out of their testing facilities, you can find news of it at some Japanese motor-sport enthusiast websites. I had to find a link to one on a forum that is closed since last year, and then I had to use freetranslations.com to get a crappy translation of the pages from Japanese to English, but all the same, an inline 6 would be a perfect fit for a new S2000 I think. I mean, think of the 3.2L from the BMW E46 M3 in an S2000: then it'd go from 49/51 weight distribution to 50/50, and given the cars performance with just a 237hp, I can't imagine how good it'd be then.

It needs in inline 6 for sure.
Anyone seen the 2JZ S2000 transplants? *evil grin*

You guys seem to forget...Honda Makes track cars. The power, weight and suspension are a package. They're balanced together for the perfect road race car with a soft side to make it streetable everyday. It is a beautiful car! The CR and TypeS are outstanding looking. The wings are beautifully matched as are the wheels. I just bought My fourth S2000 '08. If i raced every weekend it would definetly have been a CR. However there is enough space for a 3.0L 360bhp i-VTEC inline 6cyl.

It's about time they updated the entire look of the car, adding a body kit and wing won't do it.

very few people here know what they are even talking about. The original designer of the integra type R, NSX, NSX-R, and S2000, retired this year. Honda gave him a departing GIFT of a special edition car to be sold to the public in his honor. SHUT up about the kit and wing. This is a momentus and sad day in honda folks. They didnt do it to make more sales, it was already slated for discontinued production in 2007 for 2008. Leave it alone. BTW its just as good a car as any other sports car, depends on what you do with it! I like getting over 30 mgh on the highway. leave the inline 6 out of it!
