Shelby Supercars (SSC) has managed to beat the world's record for the world’s fastest production car.
Yesterday SSC closed down a two lane stretch of highway in Washington State to attempt to beat the record with the 1183 horsepower Ultimate Aero Twin Turbo.
In order to qualify SSC had to test the vehicle twice in each direction of the highway. The Ultimate Aero TT posted a top speed of 257.11 mph on its first pass and 254.55 mph on its second pass, averaging 255.83 mph.
Of course the times have to be verified before the Ultimate Aero Twin Turbo is given the title of “World’s Fastest Production Car”.

Funny how it no longer impresses me if a gasoline powered car does anything a few miles faster. Diesel maybe but not really either but electric, that might.

I hope they swept the highway first.
How long of a stretch of highway?

Lamborghini called and said they wanted the Diablo back.

NASA then called Lamborghini and demanded their fluid dynamics analysis back...being that general shape is common in many high speed land vehicles.
BTW guys, this thing uses a 6.2L 2 valve per cylinder pushrod LS3 V8 all American made. Half the cylinders, half the turbos, half the valves...
And it gets like 15-18 MPG city and 22-27 MPG highway and apparently out slaloms the Enzo as well.
And it runs on the 91 octane pump crude we call gasoline here in the states.
Why can't Europeans make smaller more efficient engines instead of W16s with 4 turbos that make less power and get less gas mileage? Ouch.

Actually the whole car is American and American made.
And it beats the Veyron in a straight line and the Enzo in the twisties.

Interesting. Is it a luxury car on the inside too, or is it more of a traditional supercar? I'd be impressed if it were like the Veyron in that respect, but if it's just some powerful supercar, woop dee doo.

Maybe if I'm really good this year, Santa will put one in my stocking.

The Euro's and Jap's know that if you are going to make it last more than 3 years, you can't use those American blocks...;0

While the SSC's numbers are impressive, I am perplexed at this one upmanship among supercars. Top speed is great ink for car magazines and comparison tests, but it really matters little in real world situations. Further, it is contridictory to current dilemmas that the majority of people face. That is fuel economy, safety, and reliability. Quite frankly, supercar buyers buy these vehicles for their exclusivity and handmade craftsmanship. It is almost incidental that the car holds the record (for now) for top speed. Many of these buyers do not have the skillset or sanctioned locale to push these cars to the limit. Even the famed Autobahn have been limited in recent years. ( I have trained in high speed control courses(EVOC) and yet would include myself as someone not skilled in driving these cars to the limit). Just a tought.

I'd still take a Porsche 911 for everyday driving comfort. Plus it cleans the air as you drive! ;-)
/me still remembers the car review of the Viper that complained about how the wheel well stuck into the drivers leg seating area and caused cramping/discomfort on long drives. What good is a supercar if you can't drive it everyday?
