Ford Escort May Return as a 100MPG Hybrid in 2011

escorthybrid_opt.jpg
We all should remember the Ford Escort that was very popular in the 1980's. The "World Car" actually saved Ford in its early days, but as the 90's set in it quickly became unpopular and died by the new millennium.

Well the Ford Escort may return to the Ford lineup. According to Next Energy Ford is working on a new 100 mpg plug-in hybrid for 2011 that will be named the Escort. If the photo rendering is anything close to what the actual production model is going to look like, the new car should help you forget all those negative feelings that we had for the old Escort.

The new Ford Escort Hybrid will finally give the Prius and upcoming Volt from GM some competition. If Ford is indeed working on this model it will not share its platform or design with any other Ford vehicles. In addition the hybrid system will not be borrowed or leased from any other automaker.

Jim:

The Escort?!! This should have been the new Focus!

"The new Ford Escort Hybrid will finally give the Prius...some competition." At least Ford isn't 20 years late to that party.

Remy LeBeau:

100 mpg? If memory serves me correctly, the US companies haven't even hit 40 mpg (real world driving, not some one time testing in a lab). Why not shoot for something realistic like 45 or 50 mpg?

HanZ:

this looks like sci-fi to me.

hybrid-diesel anyone??

A.J. Subram:

Lets not forget that before Ford's recent struggles, it was the most pro-active of the domestics when it came to pushing new technology. To be far, Ford, engine technology wise, is still far ahead of GM and Chrystler. Ford was developing Hybrid technology at the same time Toyota and Honda were; they just were slower.

I wouldn't be surprised if they took a tiny diesel from a Euro Ford and mated it with a hybrid drive-train similar to the Ford Escape

Also by 2011, Lithium Ion battery should start to become mainstream. All the automotive companies have said that Lithium Ion batteries will make electric vehicles and hybrids more viable.

I really have to applaud Ford for demonstrating that domestics can make just as fuel efficient vehicles as the Japanese if they really really really commit to it.

Travis:

100 mpg is really not that hard I seem to remember that Volvo managed to break 100 mpg back in the 80's, with some test mules that were basicly just lightened family sedan, then plugging in a low HP lean burning low displacement Turbo Diesel. There are plenty of very high MPG diesels in Europe, by which I mean they make the Prius look like a gas guzzler. Look up the recent Audi A2 for an example. For that matter VW managed around 300 mpg from a prototype 1 liter car a few years go.

I expect an explosion of Hybrid Diesel's that get 75+ mpg to happen in the US in the next 4~5 years to be honest, This Escort is likely going to be one of them if they make it.

Biil Owens:

10 years late to the party. I guess the Excursion and the Super Duty had priority.
I like the looks of the car pictured. I really hope they do it.

Rethdog:

that's more like ford! forget your gas guzzers there's a billion chinese look to consume gasoline soon - just revive the RS / Cosworths models for those whom want them & to get more interest.

nice styling (looks similiar to euro focus st); i'm guessing a diesal as europe and the USA come into alignment at that time (2010 = euro 5)

why not be really innovative and plan for and offer to lease a expansion battery pack? most of us drive less than 30 miles to work - if enough of us pushed - work would install charging points.

Gary:

As stated before, this should have been the next Focus even without 100 MPG. If it makes it out with that styling it should blow the Prius out of the water.

If Ford can keep improving their quality _and_ bring good designs like this to the US, they should be able to get back into the game easily.

Call Me Cynic:

I'm very cynical of hybrid vehicles. Prove to me that Ford can keep the costs down and not make a watered down 1.X liter underpowered, overpriced POS. Many hybrids made today have been proven to be too inefficient to have the kind of fuel economy their increased pricetags and increased costs to maintain to be long-term viable.

Another problem with Ford, is vehicle warranties and backing up the product. After 5-10 years a Ford product (with some exceptions) are ready for the junk yard, much less saving you gasoline money..

Diesel:

Don't worry. You won't get a shape like this on a Ford in US. The US Ford will forcefeed you a completely unrelated, butt ugly version.

Diesel Hybrids could be hitting 100 MPG reasonably easily in a car of this class. Especially with Li Ion battery packs.

honestjohn:

Holy-shit is looks good... I would buy it today , To wait , Ha ha history as shown ford-sucks and japan in the same time fame will be selling a much better car.

A:

Not going to happen without a paradigm shift, consumers are too hooked on overweight cars with tons of airbags, sound insulation, crumple zones, 20" wheels... Until <2000lb cars start becoming a reality, 100 mpg will remain nearly impossible.

Allen:

THAT is what a car looks like. That car pictured on this page. If Ford builds it, people will come.... for a test drive. Then Ford just needs to actually put a good car under its skin (Euro Focus anyone?) and Ford will have a hot selling car for once.

longdxcommuter:

I agree the new Escort is attractive and should be brought to the states. It should use the Focus nameplate instead of Escort. My first car was an 88 1/2 Escort that was plagued weith transmission and electrical gremlins. I lived with that miserable car for 5 long years until, I could save enough money to purchase another car. Placing the Escort name on the new model will bring back horrible memories who were duped into buying these cars back in the day. The Escort (US version, not the much better Euro version which Ford feels compelled not to share ) sold well in the states because of rebates and initial cost of ownership. It was a penalty box, when my friends spent roughly the same money on vastly better VW Golfs, Nissan Sentras, and Toyota Corolla (SR5). The early nineties redesign was uninspired, and with the Mazda engined GT not withstanding, a boring car. At which time Ford abandoned the vehicle to prepare the US market for the eventual Focus.

greg:

A number like 100 MPG for a car like this is derived from whatever distance the car can travel on battery power alone added to the distance it can travel (highway) on one gallon of gasoline. So think 50 or so miles on electricity, plus a similar distance per gallon of gasoline = 100MPG. Obviously after the battery pack is exhausted mileage will drop to more conventional 2007 numbers unless driving in city conditions or your trip is a total of 100 miles in length after which you can plug it in for another go!

The the theory at least.

steven shaw:

Well i can only say i hope they do bring back the escort im 29 now and been driving escorts since the age of 17 i currently own a escort cab at the moment and love it i have tried other cars vectra fiesta seat but none compare to the escort i love them and would defo place an order now for the new model some people say there unrelialale i dont i have never been let down yet

Paul:

i would just like to say one i think bring back the escort is a good idea it's about time and secord i think that the escort should be built in the uk like the last one and it should be abit bigger than the focus but the escort should be made as a zetec s, ST and RS and maybe a xr3 and the focus st and rs should be droped to let the escort carry the sport version of the focus
