BMW 1-Series Will Start Under $30,000 in the US

BMW's upcoming 1-Series is one of the more anticipated models that will be going on sale early next year. BMW has already released the full specs on the two initial models that we will receive here, the 128i and the hot 135i. The one thing the automaker hasn't spoken about is the pricing.

Well according to Motor Authority the BMW 1-Series is going to start under $30K. The 230HP 128i will start under $30,000 while the 300HP 135i will start in the mid-$30,000's. Premium automakers are at a risk when they release lower end models and that is why Lexus has vowed to not break the under $30K threshold. BMW could change that way of thinking with its new 1-Series when it hits showrooms early next year.

Note to Acura: Your TSX is now seriously lacking power for it's price range. I'm not sure if even their 2.3T from the RDX can keep up with the TT V6 in this thing. Hell this thing will probably stomp the TL Type S too.

Lets see, a loaded TSX with 220HP or a loaded 135i with 300HP for the same price? Doesn't seem that hard of a decision to me.

As to pricing this car in the mid $30,000 for the 135i: I honestly can't see it. The 335i starts at just $4000 more, and its bigger and has 4 doors. And that is assume the 135i is priced at $35,000 even.

I mean, could it be a success? Sure, given its bound to beat some Porsche ass and look better while doing it, but that means you only get the enthusiast group.

A loaded TSX costs 30K flat no more. subtract 2k for nav and the car costs $28k and that's still loaded. We all no BMW rapes you on the options. How are you comparing a turbo 1 series costing 35k and a tsx costing 28k - two differnet worlds.

We have not seen pricing of the next TSX, or the next TSX for that matter (other than a wagon). I would imagine that it will be priced more against the 128 than the 135.

I would like one, but even at sub 30K (29995k ?) it is just too little car. If I had the extra cash I would get one for the commute.

The TSX is a more expensive Honda Accord with no V6. It's real competitor in the BMW lineup is the 325/328.

Who wants to drive a FWD Honda when you can have RWD or AWD BMW? You pay more because it costs more to build. GET IT THROUGH YOUR FRICKIN HEADS!

This is BMW's plan to charge more for the 3-series. A loaded 3 use to be in the low $30's, now it's the low $40's.

Similar to Honda with the Fit/Civic.

Will someone ever come up with a rational explanation as to why Americans think they need a freaking Panzer just to get to work or get groceries? If you had a large family, it would make sense, but most of these people are driving the cars (well, tanks is a more accurate term) with no one in them but themselves.

As to the car am just hoping they release a 135xi later in '08 or even in in '09. I love this car, but I need the AWD for when it snows or I have to navigate the sand of the high desert.

dont kid yourself into thinking the 135 is going to be around $30k, youll be lucky to even get the 128 at that price

Sorry, we have a small car, the other car needs some utility and it is served by a minivan now.
Where you live maybe you go to the footie game on the weekend or something, I do a lot more.

Anyway, if I had the money to buy it for a commuter, i certainly would.

With 300 lb/ft at 1,800 rpm (if I recall correctly), a 135i could probably out tow your minivan any day. The only hit it has (depending on if your kid is small enough to need a car seat) for practicality is that it's a coupe. Anyways, at least you're intelligent enough to drive a minivan instead of an suv.

I seriously would love to have the 128i. 220HP sounds like more than enough to make that a fun car.

I doubt that. My grandparents used to go camping all around the country (with a trailer) and they did all their trips using small, 4 cylinder engined cars with a manual transmission - never any problems, even in the mountains (and that was in the old days before there were ECU's that could adjust for the difference in altitude).

It's still a BMW. It will probably be in the shop more often than it's on the road. Not to mention, I would be willing to bet the Acura is more comfortable to ride in. If you want handling the BMW would probably be the best route, if you want reliability and comfort a Japanese car would probably be a better choice.
