The "F" version of the Lexus IS was unveiled earlier this year. The M3 fighter has a 5.0L V8 with over 400 horsepower. It is now rumored that Lexus is working on an "F" version of the GS sedan.
The Lexus GS-F could be released by 2012 with a V10 engine putting out over 500 horsepower. This would compete with the BMW M5, Mercedes-Benz E63, and upcoming Audi RS6 sedan. The GS is due for a redesign for the 2011 model year, so the GS-F could be released a year later. The high-performance version of the GS will also borrow the eight-speed transmission from the LS sedan.

Nice, it looks like the HP war is in full scale, just about every make has a higher performance version of their cars. I'm still biased to the CTS-V...the '09 is rumored to have 550+ supercharged hp.

The CTS-V will probably get a slightly detuned version of the SC engine the Vette SS is supposed to get. If true, that would make it easy to extract a lot of additional power.

Does it take that long to engineer a V10? In F1 they change engine designs from year to year...they could do better than 2012, surely.

The GS IMO is ugly. It looks like a camry with different lights. If this car really wants to compete with the M5, its got to have a WAY better exterior.

500hp? in 2012? *yawn* and compete with the m5 and rs6? no way, right now the m5 is over 500hp and has the sweest suspension ever, a thing no japanaese maker could possibly duplicate, and the Audi has over 600 HP!! what chance does this car have?

No, the Audi, which does not currently exist, MAY have 600+ hp. Out of the three cars you mention (this Lexus, the M5, and the RS6) only one currently is in production.

I'm surprised it takes Toyota that long to come up with a new car. But I guess when you have to learn how to copy perfection, it can take some time to try to out-do it. Anyone remember the old Lexus advertisements? The relentless pursuit of perfection? Products such as the IS were such blatant 3-series copies, except for that lame aluminum shift-knob. No one in the market for this kind of car would pay for something that shares parts with the neighbors Camry. Besides, in 2012 the M cars will likely have more power.

aaaand by the time this comes out BMW will have a 600hp M5... hell Audi already has almost (unofficially over) 600hp RS6 now (coming soon).
I'd rather buy a Vette or Viper. In 2012 (if GM and Chrysler survive until then) they will have even more HP than now and noone really needs a sedan that fast. Seriously. Get a Lexus and a purpose built sports car separately if you have enough money to afford that. Other than scaring the shit out of your family and friends you haul around why have 500hp sedans?

People calling Lexus Toyota are so funny. Do you not realize that other luxury manufacturers offer stripped versions of BMWs, Mercedes, etc.? It's actually funny because you CAN get a cheap MB or BMW but NOT a cheap Lexus because they use the Toyota name for that.
Bottom line is that Lexus is amazing in terms of reliability and dependability and THAT IS WHY THEY ARE #1 in the world (lexus/Toyota). It's funny that BMW and MB and Audi are so good that they can't even make something that lasts. SAD. German cars = crap quality.
