What Were the Top 20 Best Selling Vehicles in the US Through July?

07fordf150_05.jpg
Reuters has posted a list of the 20 top-selling vehicles in the U.S. through July of 2007. There aren't really any big surprises here.

The Ford F-Series continues to dominate the market as the best selling vehicle with the Chevrolet Silverado coming in second and the Toyota Camry coming in at third place.

Here's the list:
Top 20 Selling Vehicles Up Until July 2007 (ranked by total units sold):

1. Ford F-Series: 411,926
2. Chevy Silverado: 357,893
3. Toyota Camry: 282,044
4. Toyota Corolla: 231,940
5. Honda Accord: 219,488
6. Dodge Ram: 214,569
7. Honda Civic: 201,652
8. Chevrolet Impala: 201,612
9. Nissan Altima: 164,717
10. Honda CR-V: 124,262
11. GMC Sierra: 115,185
12. Chevrolet Cobalt: 112,287
13. Toyota Prius: 110,565
14. Dodge Caravan: 110,507
15. Ford Focus: 109,876
16. Ford Econoline/Club Wagon: 106,045
17. Toyota Tundra: 105,990
18. Ford Escape: 104,645
19. Toyota-RAV4: 101,618
20. Honda Odyssey: 94,479

What is interesting about these stats:

-Domestic automakers (Ford, GM, Chrysler) have 10 out of the 20 models in the list.
-There are only three SUVs on the list and they are all small car based SUVs. The end of the large truck based SUV is here.
-Toyota has the most vehicles on the list.
-The Toyota Corolla is the number 4 best selling vehicle despite its age and the fact that it will be replaced soon.
-Only six out of the 20 vehicles are based on truck platforms.
-The Chevrolet Impala, Nissan Altima, Honda CR-V, Toyota Prius, Toyota Tundra, and the Toyota RAV-4 had the largest gains over the same period in 2006.

Eddie:

Hmm, I still don't understand why the GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado are not combined. Then again, if they were, that means that the Sierra/Silverado would be outselling the F- series.
I too am surprised that the Corolla is selling so well, particularly in that it's outselling the Accord and Civic.

Stu:

Yep Toyota continues to do well in automotive marketplace. Although people will not stop criticizing them for their bland styling and design, which is true some times, their vehicles continue to "sell like hot bread." For example, look at the outdated Corolla that is outselling both Honda Accord and redesigned Civic (which by the way also sells as a coupe) !!! In addition it is rumored that the next gen Corolla will have a coupe and/or hatchback variant. Hey I've grown up around Toyotas all my life and they have proven to be very trustworthy and reliable, and that's why they will continue to dominate car sales in the States. They may not appeal to the hardcore car enthusiast but they sure satisfy the needs of the everyday car shopper and driver.

zippy:

Proof that gas is still a bargain in the US.
While some of those truck sales are for working folk who need it, a lot go to surburban commuters.

long:

What a shame and clueless for toyota buyers, toyota are boring and can't not match honda performance, fit and finish. i would choose honda and GM over any toyota cars.

Darren:

People who have no clue on the history of Toyota should just shut up. These are vehicles built on pride and have proven to be the best in the world. After 5 Toyota’s now I own perfected Is300 Lexus. Any words against Toyota just come from haters.. Clueless Honda & GM owners .

Long:

Toyota tundra, camry, and corolla should be in the 50th place not top 20th cause they're the crabiest and ugliest cars and trunks on the market. If u considering a work horse jus go buy a Chevy Silverado or F-series. When in comes to look, performance, and quality honda rules and dont forget GM their creeping up. Thanks to Bob Lutz. GM will be back on top as No. 1 and Honda will be along aside of them. "Toyota Customer Are Fools"

Sphere:

I would buy the Tundra for the 6 speed transmission coupled with that beast of an engine. Heck I would buy it just for the looks alone, if not just to burn gas and piss off hybrid owners.

:-)

Long:

How in the world are you a Honda fan, but still tout GM? If you're all about "looks, performance, and quality" stick with Honda, but to go around and say that GM is all three of those is dumbfounding...

Long:

In the United States, General Motors is considered an old line company with an inferior product and a bloated management. In contrast, Toyota is viewed as the politically correct savior of the planet with unfailingly reliable vehicles. That TOYOTA RECALLED MORE CARS IN THE UNITED STATES THAN IT SOLD LAST YEAR the Tundra has been a complete bust is conveniently ignored in the effort to trash Detroit as stupid an arrogant.
Screw the media and stop taking side of toyota. Honda and GM rule.

leamsi:

I thing the is true the Toyota have good reliable car and I may say the look good, but what is true ford, GM are doing pretty well In that area and his cars are better looking cars, 10 years ago I be rather to buy a Toyota but not right now. Wake up! ford and gm have much better cars today.

Noya:

Will all the rednecks touting Domestics (Long & leamsi) go back to grammar school and learn the english language- your posts make me want to vomit.

Luke:

Are Toyota's really reliable???

Ok I don't know about the US but in Australia Toyota hammers you with add campaigns to get genuine Toyota service. They brain wash their consumers here to go to Toyota and get ripped off and the funny thing is most people do. Now imgaine if they didn't do these add campaigns. I reckon alot of services will be missed and the once reliable Toyota will no longer be reliable.

Well lucky for you that Toyota isn't at the top of the sales list like it is here in Australia.(First year actually). Corolla number one. Not to mention they have 5 veichles in the top 10.

The corolla is junk. I will take a mazda3, honda civic, volkswagen golf(rabbit) hell pratically any small car over it except the Nissan Tida(Versa). We have had the new one for some time and the interior is just full of plastic. The boot is about the same size it is in the Yaris (this is for the hatch corolla vs hatch yaris) which is shocking considering how much bigger the corolla is.

Well at least some sensible cars are creeping up on those rediculous truck sales.

Whats with the position of the prius. They don't sell like that anywhere else.

Long :

Just make sure you vomit all over your piece of crab toyota and not on my honda. With that name (NOYA) you should be driving a pink corolla with crome spinners. if dont like domestic cars then get fawk out, i should haul u and your family back to where you came from with a sweet Chevy HD Silverado. And you dont know about cars you little punk.

Jimmy:

Its no suprise Ford F-Series hit the top again. They are very reliable trucks and great for work/play. As for whay the GMC/Chevy trucks were not added together is understandable. That would mean Ford/Lincolns trucks(the Mark series) would have been added along with any other variants Ford owns.

As for Toyota they are not as reliable as you would think. I had a 2006 Corolla rental with 6k miles on it. I was driving it on the highway in San Antonio when it vibrated violently and smoke plummed out of the exhausts that was so thick you couldn't see two inches in front of you. After that it dropped to 20mph and the tachometer wouldn't go above 2kRPM and was goig between 1k-2krpm. Turns out the engine blew. And I was barely going 70mph when this happened. A friend from Puerto Rico told me Toyota engines are not built very strong and can blow like that at anytime.

As for American cars, it does seem that all the cars are getting much better in terms of quality and reliability. In fact the 2007 series of Ford vehicles were rated about the same quality as Toyotas(since they seem to be the best). And GMC is getting better except with its Cobalt(re-vamped Cavaleir or as I call it Crapalier) and the G6 which is a re-vamped GrandAM. ANd Dodge is getting pretty bad. They haven't been selling well and their cars aren't that great recently.

I myself wounder whay Ford quit production on the Contour. Its great quality, performance and modability made it a great car. I have a 99 with 80k miles on it and never a problem with it and I have seen a few suped up to 500+hp/tourqe.

Maybe the Fusion will turn out just as good but doesn't look half as good as the Contour/Mondeo did(still does in Europe)

Mart:

Some other ways to look at that table of statistics:

1) the top four selling cars in the US are all Japanese. Hmmm.....
2) the best selling "American brand" car in the US is the Impala. Huh? Isn't that a large car? Where are all the small American cars? (Cobalt is #12, is that the same size as Civic and Corolla?)
3) Where's the Nissan Maxima? Not in the top 20? Hmmm.....
4) Only 12 vehicles are outselling the Prius in the US... way to go Toyota! Prolly selling as many of those as they can make...
5) I agree with Zippy, you'd wonder what all the fuss is about over gas prices when the top two vehicles (by a significant margin) are still large pickups.
6) It's odd to see a headline like "Toyota's Tundra is outselling GMC's Sierra!" on the same page as a list claiming 115,000 Sierra sales and 105,000 Tundra sales.

Nate:

The top four cars may be by Japanese companies, but they are all manufactured in the US.

Torque:

Why does the site owner here not let posts stay that mention that Toyota used $3000 incentives to grow sales?

Marc:

Re: Torque

I don't recall any posts on this post about the Tundra rebates. I did mention the rebates in other posts about the Tundra. Sorry if the system deleted your post.

Don:

What I'd like to know is how many of these "sales" were from individual buyers versus rental car companies & fleets? I could be wrong, but my guess is the F-150 was sold mostly to fleets, not to your average Joe Sixpack pickup truck buyer. I'd also wager that half of the Chevy Impala sales were sold as rental cars.

JJ:

the most amazing thing that I have noticed in my years......people will buy something by how it looks.....not according to the intended purpose.....each brand and model has its use....work...play....basic transportation.....and fuel economy....I've been working on and repairing vehicles in my shop for over 20 years.....each make has good and bad built in....however most people will swear by whatever their parents or they drove when growing up with no real idea what life is all about and will speak from igorance and even argue about it just to hear themselves make noise......
