Volvo Wants to go After the BMW 3-Series...Is it Possible?

2009_s40s60.jpg
According to Autocar, Volvo is going to re-position its S40 and S60 models by 2010.

The fate of the Volvo S60 has been questionable for quite sometime as it was rumored that Volvo was planning on discontinuing the model. Now it is being rumored that Volvo is going to position the S60 as more of a BMW 3-Series and Audi A4 competitor in 2009. This means that the new sedan will not grow much in size, but it will get new sharper styling, better handling and an improved interior. The overall styling of the car will be very coupe-esque.

Volvo is also going to drastically change its S40 sedan that is due in 2010. The next S40 could become a five-door hatchback like the Audi A3. The S40 name could also be dropped and replaced with V30.

Will these changes work? It will be nice to see Volvo finally come out with some more "striking" designs. Especially since the current S60 and S40 are incredibly boring compared to the Audi A4/ A3 and the BMW 3-Series.

Go Volvo! How about bringing back the world famous 240 model? I currently own a 1989 Volvo 240 GL and I love it because it's one of the easiest cars I've ever worked on and probably the most reliable car I've ever driven. Dang near 150,000 miles and still going strong. How many cars from the 80s can you say that about?

Dariel:

My 88 supra turbo is going on 200,000

Tsu777:

While not technically from the 80's, my 91 MR2 has 220,000 miles on it.

And it doesn't look like a brick, either.

Clayton:

Granted, there are some cars from the 80s other than Volvos that are highly reliable, however, this thread is talking about Volvos, not other makes. My point being that since Volvo is introducing new models, maybe they should bring back a classic with an updated look just like Ford keeps doing with the Mustang and GM did with the HHR and hopefully will do with the Camaro. There are some people that don't know what a S40 or S60 sedan is but they are familiar with the 240s. It only makes sense to redo the 240 with a modern look. Put in a turbo 6 or Yamaha V8, keep it rear wheel drive with maybe awd as an option, add all the bells and whistles of a modern Volvo and have a really nice retro sedan that stands out from the crowd. Are you listening Volvo? Please pay attention!

If it looks like the above vehicle, it should do well. It looks very nice; IMO.

Clayton:

One other thing, even though my 240 looks like a brick, I can easily find my car in any parking lot because of its unique look. It definitely stands out from all the other sedans. Bring back the brick!

meh...volvo's been slacking cuz of ford.

Very dynamic and sports line.

If volvo brings in their 4C-chassis and 4-wheel drive they sure can match BMW in performance! However, to really win the premium buyers there must be that sense of quality in every aspect of the ride, and the car.
Things like gearboxes just cant brake down, volvo!

"Especially since the current S60 and S40 are incredibly boring compared to the Audi A4/ A3 and the BMW 3-Series." .... says who?!

Perhaps the author is aged in his or her late teenager years or has somekind of obsession for the Bayerian badge or the Audi's olympic rings. The current S40/V50 styling differentiates Volvo by MILES from more concurrent and appealing opponents. It's just the touch of Scandinavian styling meeting the pure reasoning behind Swedish cars. Take my word, the almighty Swede's are at the moment where the Germans would always have liked to be. The Swedes have the styling that does not need renewal and more "anger" every second year.

Who ever wrote this article should grow up, learn that chicks are not to be picked up with olympic rings and/or badges. Such items are for puberty aged people. Face the fact, Volvo is Volvo because it looks like a Volvo, not some ridiculously offensively smiling beemer, that hasn't even got the gut (318 for example).

Shanie:

I think it would be a good idea for both style and saftey if Volvo would create some type of active rear brake lighting... For example: if your slightly pressing the brake normal brakeing lights should come on, if you are gradually pressing the brake down harder, there should be another set of brake lights that come on to warn other drivers behind you(not blinding them with a bright red light, but more red area of light.
