Nissan May Void the 2008 GT-R Warranty for 2nd Owners of the Car

spy_shots_nissan_skyline_gtr_az.jpg

The unveiling of Nissan's GT-R supercar is right around the corner. The car has yet to enter production and there is already a waiting list. Some of those buyers on the waiting list may be looking to flip the Nissan GT-R to make a profit, but they may have to think again.

Nissan's vice-president of marketing, Jan Thompson, stated that Nissan is considering voiding the warranty on the GT-R for second owners if the transaction takes place within one year of the original purchase. Nissan hopes that voiding the warranty will discourage buyers from flipping the car for a profit. The final decision will be made before its official unveiling at the Tokyo Auto Show this fall.

That's one way to keep those greedy punks from trying to turn an easy profit :) Good for Nissan!

Good idea...maybe Ducati could consider such a thing...

Adam:

Why does Nissan care? They still get their money. Once the person owns a product they should be able to do whatever they want with it as long as it doesn't hurt somebody. I can see voiding warranties once there is a second owner, but limiting the time at which they can sell it? Lame.

ZZZ:

@ Adam

It doesnt make your product look good when people primarily buy it to resale and make a profit on.

Im sure you remember what happened during Playstaion 3 release, with 90% of the people standing in line just waiting to spam it on ebay.

Adam:

Yep, I did just that for the XBox 360. Doesn't seem to bother Microsoft very much, they ge the added hype and free publicity. If people are able to buy the GT-R and sell it for more then Nissan should see that as a sign that they can increase their price and still maintain adequate sales. I don't think many people would look at the reselling issue as that big of a deal. It doesn't make it look like a crappy product, it makes it look like a superior and highly-demanded product.

JohnnyNismo:

If I owned that car I wouldn't need a warranty. For one I would have the money to fix anything if I could afford it. Most of all, I WOULD MOD THE HELL OUT OF IT! Skylines are not meant by God to be driven stock.

Svtman:

Case in point look at the GT-500's.....

ZZZ:

so since Playstations 3s sold on ebay for well over $5000, that means its a good idea for Sony to raise the price, got to be kidding. And no it doesnt make it look like a superior product just because it resells high. That type of logic is just /facepalm

It makes your product look bad when everyone is buying it to resell it because guess what it shows that people dont actually want it to own, only to resell it.

Allen:

I sold an Xbox 360 when it came out for $2950, and a Playstation 3 for $1800. The Wii went for $3000. And it was the one with the most units shipped!

Anyway, I bet all those people who bought em quick were disappointed to learn that there would be an Xbox 360 Elite and a Playstation 3 80 gig version.

I agree with Nissan on this move though. One it will keep dealerships from overcharging (remember what happened with the Pontiac Solstice?), and it will keep paperwork down (warranties won't have two be thrice refiled).

As for me, it is disappointing I will not be able to sell one for oodles of cash, but all the same, good for the market.

Gary:

It's probably the only time a Manufacturer has actually looked out for the interests of it's customers. Make's me rethink my long standing anti Nissan attitude.

That has got to be the most naive statement I've read in quite a while.

John:

I think its a good move for Nissan. This insures that only real enthusiasts will be driving these beautiful machines.

"I think its a good move for Nissan. This insures that only real enthusiasts will be driving these beautiful machines."

in a nutshell basically, only enthusiasts should have their hands on this car, not ebay sharks

rene:

What a brilliant idea to get free publicity out of your own incompetence to have sufficient cars ready for launch.

Next is the boss on YouTube proclaiming this warranty thing, pulling another kind of guerilla advertising tactic.

Please please dont fall for it. Nissan should do a good job and supply sufficient cars from day one.
I wonder whether this is legal...

Sabby:

I don't see the point; from Nissan's perspective, whether or not people are re-selling their cars, Nissan's still selling them first. As long as they keep selling cars, the money keeps coming in, and the stockholders should be happy.

If people are re-selling items, for a profit, it doesn't necessarily mean they don't want or like the product, it simply means they want to make money (think of it as a good investment). Later on, when supply catches up with demand, those same people that initially re-sold the product, can simply purchase it again, and still have money left over. I don't see the detrimental imact.

A.J. Subram:

This won't stop people from purchasing cars at an insane resale value. If you're willing to spend 1000s of dollars over MSRP to get your hands on this car, a void warranty is nothing to you.

Tai:

The car will be base at 57k base MSRP. What sort of demand are they expecting from this car? Perhaps their production is way too low. I believe the original high-end skyliners were about 40k. If they would have kept the new skyline in that price range I would be the first to get one however at these projected prices i'll just wait and see.

Jon:

You've got to kidding right pricing the same as the the original Skyliners for 40k, while i whole heartedly agree it'd be awesome to see the car at that price but there is no way especially when you consider the hopeful performance of the car and the inflation since the first car, minimum wage isn't still what it was then for a reason.

that's the funniest thing I ever heard of form Nissa. They are idiots. They need to keep their dealers from ripping the consumers off first. Their own dealers are trying to get as much above list as they can scam someone into. I had dealer telling me they expect nothing less than 20 k above lest and tehy are taking bids on the cars.
