Acura Will Have Diesels on the Market by 2010

Honda has been making headlines lately due to its upcoming diesel engines that will first be offered in the all-new Accord (US). Acura on the other hand has remained quiet. Currently Acura does not have a hybrid or a diesel in its lineup to attract the "green" shoppers and to remain competitive with its competitors.

This will change in 2010 according to Japanese newspaper, Nikkei. Currently Honda is working on adapting the 2.2L 4-cylinder diesel for the US market and the automaker is also working on a V6 diesel for its larger vehicles. One our both of these engines could make it into the current Acura lineup by 2010.

The V6 diesel would be a prime candidate for the RL, TL and MDX vehicles. The 4 cylinder diesel would be a great option on the next TSX and the RDX SUV.

tgom:

Acura needs to do something with the RDX. I was considering one for my wife, but the gas mileage is pitiful for a small SUV. It gets 19 under the 2008 EPA ratings. Hopefully the diesel can get at least 27 on the highway.

Burnside:

A similar powered diesel will probably only increase the gas mileage 25% which would likely put the RDX in the 23-24mpg range on the highway. The Diesel cycle is more efficient, but doesn't represent more than a 25-30% gain in thermodynamic efficiency.
