Jaguar has revealed its new XF sedan ahead of its official unveiling at next month's Frankfurt Motor Show. The XF, which will launch early next year will replace the aged S-Type sedan and is very important for Jaguar.
The Jaguar XF draws its inspiration from the C-XF concept car. Jaguar hopes to go head to head with the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedans with the new XF. Therefore designers worked hard to move away from the old and stogy image of the current S-Type.
Initially in the US there will be two engine choices, both engines will displace 4.2L but with 300hp and 420hp. The more powerful version is supercharged. An XF-R version is expected in about a year with somewhere around 500 horsepower.
In addition to the new sportier styling, Jaguar engineers also fitted the car with a plethora of tech gadgets. LED headlights, voice-activated control for many of the interior accessories, a new shift-by-wire transmission control, touch activated interior lights and glove box release, Blind Spot Monitor, and adaptive cruise control are among the many available features on the new XF.
One interesting and noteworthy feature is the JaguarDrive Selector that is borrowed from the concept version. It features a rotary shift interface that is unlike any other car currently on the market. The device is flush with the center console when the car is off, but once it is turned on it rises to the palm of the driver's hand and can be rotated to select park, reverse, drive and sequential mode.

Jaguar used to be one of my favourite manufacturers, but since seeing this I'm now in mourning.
With this car, Ford have finally managed to kill the last remaining bits of individual styling that made Jaguar stand out against the crowd.
Jag has now joined the ranks of many other car companies like Mercedes and BMW that sell bland generic grey corporate-safe boring products.
I hope Ford sell Jaguar soon and I don't care to who, as the chances that absolutely anyone else could do a better job are very high.

It looks just like an Infinity sedan. I remember a time when Jaguar designs used to stand out. This design just blends in with everything else on the road. If this is the future styling of Jaguar, then Jaguar is dead.

It looks really nice. If I had the money, I would buy one.
Every time I see the a Jaguar, I think of the British mystery show with John Thaw as Inspector Morse. He always drove a Jaguar.
It would be nice if there was a more compact/smaller version for those of us who like smaller cars.

I'm impressed with this German fighter's technology including its engine specs, interior refinement, & especially it's lightweight aluminum manufacturing(not stated in the article).
Although the exterior shows an excellent side silhouette. pleasant rear end, they clearly bungled the front end which clearly took some design clues right off GM.... particularly the front end which resembles the Buick Lucerne. Another observation is the Cadillac inspired steering wheel.
The Germans will have to squint hard & wonder why a Lucerne is gaining on them...

"Designers worked hard to move away from the old and stogy image of the current S-Type." hummm.
Alternatively, they could have just call this one Mercury Cougar 2009.
It does not look like a Jaguar to me, and I find the shift gear pretty stupid. But if it light, powerful and it handles, maybe it is worth it, I don't know.
It could be worse of course, and base this one on the Ford 500, like they did with the X-type/Mondeo.

I wish that they had kept more of the C-XF styling, but overall this car is pretty good looking.
Nice engine ports by the doors, and it still has a little of that cat like look. ITs base engine is underpowered though: BMWs V8 is 360 hp, Mercedes is 382 and isnt there a 320 option? Both BMW, Lexus, and Infiniti can make 300 hp from 6 cylinder engines. Needing two more cylinders to do that from Jaguar is kind of bad. At least they could of made both engines supercharged 4.2s, and just offer one with more boost then the other.
I still wish they would produce the concept exactly as it was. But, this is good enough for the market. My money though will still be with BMW and Mercedes, they do just look better and have better engines for equivalent money.

I want to add though that the interior is very nice. Again I do wish for a little more of the concept in it, but that is a first rate interior as far as I am concerned.

Ohh sooo close. The side profile and rear are out standing, the front they screwed up on, the more I think about it the more I think it's a mater of the grill being mounted to high, that and the fact that it's actually tilted back instead of vertical, it would be a minor adjustment to make this car very good looking.
The interior is a total miss, the leather looks cheap, more like a Honda Accord, and the seats are thinly padded. The *shifter* looks like it's for show and not use. The dash is really plain other than the wood and the aluminum it looks like the inside of any basic 4 door sedan, slightly worse actually because the cut line for the wood where it crosses the center stack is awkward at best.

This is gonna be like jag of the past. New car come out, styling scares people away. When the car goes out of the production, people realise: " Hey the car was quite good looking after all... ... Too bad it have went out of production."
Like one of the motoring show said: "The cars suddenly looks beautiful when they went out of production."

The car's a hit to me. If they price it right they'll have a winner. The look is fantastic! I don't understand all of the moaning about the styling. It has a nice refined, but distinctive look. The Jaguar look is still maintained by the side vent and front grill. The interior is very nicely done and the rear lights and style are attractive.
Ford, hang on to Jaguar. You have a winner.

Allen, you're looking at the engine options all wrong. The naturally aspirated 4.2L is meant to go against BMW's twin turbo inline 6. BMW's NA 3.0 only produces 230HP, so we don't expect this Jag to be priced with those models. The supercharged 4.2L produces an impressive 420HP, and that engine is going to be pitted against BMW's 360HP V8. It doesn't matter as much how they make the power, just that they make it. How is adding two cylinders and having more displacement any less valid than turbocharging? How is supercharging any less valid than increasing displacement?
By your argument, BMW's V10 is bad, because it has "needs" 2 more cylinders to produce "comparable" power with the V8s. BTW, keep in mind that the V10 I'm referring to has 500 net peak HP, but only a saddening 383 ft/lb of torque.
For clarity, a chart:
BMW 3.0L NA L6 @230HP (XF and E-series not priced this low)
BMW 3.0L TC L6 @300HP vs. Jag 4.2L NA V8 @300HP vs. Benz 3.5L NA V6 @268HP
BMW 4.8L NA V8 @360HP vs. Jag 4.2L SC V8 @420HP vs. Benz 5.5L NA V8 @382HP
BMW M5? 5.0L NA V10 @500HP vs. (Future XF-R?) vs. E63 AMG-made 6.3L NA V8 @507HP
With all that said, I don't know that I like the XF. I certainly wish it was more daring in looks, true to its Jaguar heritage.

Quite nice actually. They needed to make it more contemporary and they did and the old Jags were really dated by design. Nothing to really miss there. This design is actually worth a little extra over the Mondeo on which it is probably based on. Not a big deal though as Mondeos have superior handling.

My goodness graciously, they pimped my S80.
Can they please, please put an iron curtain between the two design studios, and not let the eight year old boy draw spectacles on the volvo?
XF80: crossed from Folvo.

Wow. Ford manages to completely demolish another car genre. Jaguar has gone the way of Volvo, assimilated to the bland US styling that makes you want to go into a deep coma. I'm ashamed to be an American. Who the hell is going to buy a jaguar that can be mistaken for a Taurus, or as one fellow above put it "Mecury Cougar 2009".

On the whole, it's not bad. Actually, it's a lot better than I expected based on the concepts I saw... Truth told though, I don't much care for the grill, at least not in the photos. It might be better if the logo was closer to the center.

Ohhh whoa is you! The drama! Why do people romanticize the past so much? I suppose we'd all love it if Volvos were still clattering shoeboxes and Jaguars still rusted at the wheel wells and left oil stains on the garage floor.
FYI, Volvo is flourishing and their cars are less bland today than they ever have been. Would you be happy if Jag didn't change the floundering S-Type ever?!? Then I'm certain that you'd be willing to be one of the six people that buy one in 2008. No? I didn't think so. And if you think that the XF looks like a Taurus, you need to get your eyes checked. Besides comparison to a Corolla, the Taurus is the generic design insult. The reality is that the XF is sexier than any Lexus or contrived Banglized BMW. It'll sell like crazy.

Poor Jaguar...So much potential, but terrible execution. The face of this car is hideous. Once again, Ford has dropped the ball...
(Though the inside, thankfully, is well put together.)

Jaguar needs a reboot.
It's gotten confused, trying to make larger-luxo-affordable-exclusive-performance-responsible cars. They've no clue what they are doing anymore.
They used to be a racing company that took that technology to the public roads, in order to earn money for more racing.
Now, they are an extension Fords accounting department.
Ford should give Jaguar it's phone number for Mazda (also mostly Ford now.) Jaguar should then massage the Miata, putting in a small inline or v6, in order to go toe-to-toe with the BMW Z4's. The engines for this program should be developed on the racetrack, then detuned for tractability and reliability.
But no. They will continue trying to make the ultimate European Taurus. Sigh.
