The New VW Diesel-Powered Jetta Will Get 60mpg on the Highway...Should VW Release a Diesel Rabbit?

2007_vw_rabbit.jpg
It seems like diesels are constantly in the headlines now. Honda has been making headlines with its upcoming Accord diesel that will be out next year. Well VW is also planning a release of an eco-friendly gas-saving diesel next March.

In March 2008 the Jetta will once again have a diesel option, which is different than the old 1.9L diesel that was previously offered in the last generation Jetta. The new 2.0L diesel promises to have reduced emissions, which will make it legal in all 50 US states and it will have more power. Although the new engine will have more power, thanks to variable turbine engineering, 140 hp and 230 lb-ft of torque, the engine will get roughly the same gas mileage as the old engine. Early estimates are putting it at 60 mpg on the highway.

The diesel will be able with either a six speed manual or six speed DSG transmission.

Initially the engine will be only available in the Jetta and upcoming Jetta Sportwagen, but it could also end up in the upcoming Tiguan and the Rabbit. VW is currently discussing the possibility of transplanting the diesel in the Rabbit. Since VW is interested in expanding their new diesel lineup it seems logical. Unfortunately the New Beetle was not mentioned.

Casey:

I'd much rather have a diesel Rabbit than a sorority girl diesel Jetta. You can also haul more crap in the Rabbit, since it's hatchback.

Jan-P:

Rabbit=Golf in Europe, and we already have the 170 hp Golf GT Sport 2.0 TDI with DSG.

Holy freaking crap!!! I just bought my first TDi (haven't gotten a chance to drive it yet though), but I am already psyched over the switch to diesel. My car has 90 hp with about 150 torque, but this badboy ups the anty to 140/230? And it does it with 60mpg highway? Excellent!

While I am a bit leary of the numbers (seem VERY high for that engine) I would love to see this become a reality. Heck, I might end up pre-ordering one if they can really pull this off!

Darmok:

You've got it backwards there, and it's mostly the rabbit cabriolet that is driven by cheerleaders and sorority girls and uh... "different" kinds of guys.

James:

Yes!!! Somebody finally said it. Volkswagen is gay. They need to bring back the Sirocco or the Corrodo. That may make them a little less gay. They're up there with Saturn when it comes to those things.

It is already available in other markets and it really gets some MPG's out of diesel.

The turbo is really really nice.

Different:

Hey wiseguy. I'm a "different" kind guy and I'll bet you a new Jetta that I can kick the crap out of you. You too James you little closet case.. Besides I don't like cabriolets.

bear:

ok,
60mpg is usual in europe. Guys, you should get out more. "out" meaning this world. USA is just a friggin' country, not the whole f-ing world.
The 60mpg on highway, 2.0L turbo engine is not even the finest of what they have. Thats a 4 years old engine for God's sake .
Anyway, the only dilema VW is having is if it woth puting that engine in that car for N.American market.

Darmok:

I never said there was anything wrong with that. You have to admit that certain cars are often driven by certain categories of people. If I said Cadillacs and Buicks are often driven by old people, you wouldn't be offended by that stereotyping. Your specific case is not covered under a broad generalization. I'll admit that there are lots of guys in that category who ride Harleys or drive Camaros, and lots of other normal generic cars. But when you see a guy driving a Cabriolet, it's either his girlfriends car, or he probably has a boyfriend.

I actually like VWs, but there are certain models I have no interest in. GTI is cool, R32 is cool, Jetta GLI is pretty good, Sirocco and Corrado were cool. VW is also above pretty much everyone in the DSG transmission category.

James:

Hey, I'm all for homosexual men, it makes me have less competition for women. In all seriousness though, I live in Baltimore and it is a trend that is like that. I'm not stereotyping or anything. If you see a Man driving a Jetta, a Beetle or a Rabbit chances are well you know. Anyways, I like the GTI and it was one of the cars that I looked at when I was shopping. And who said that gay people can't fight. Jean Claude Van Dam and a lot of Martial Arts specialists are like that. Sexual Orientation has not to do with fighting ability it just has to do with the way you swing. You are stereotyping yourself when you assume stuff like that.

The solution Man:

I don't care how gay the car is, if it gets 60mpg I'll take one. As long as it's not a PT Cruiser, ROFL...

Alysandra:

It can only get 60 mpg if it starts on a regular basis... don't waste your money on euro trash.

Remy LeBeau:

"It can only get 60 mpg if it starts on a regular basis... don't waste your money on euro trash."

Right, because it was the Germans who built the SUV that averages 9.5 mpg......oh wait, that was GM.

chris:

I have been driving my Golf TDI for 7 years. In that time I have driven as much as 1600km on a 55 litre tank (all highway on a nice cool summer day with windows up and no air conditioning - converts to about 68mpg). So far I have saved over $6000 on fuel and $8000 on maintenance versus my previous small North American sedan. I have even managed to tow my fishing boat with this car.

Whatever people may think the car is capable, it has saved me a lot of money and I have polluted less than my previous car. With any luck I'll get another 7 years out of this car. But if I need a replacement before then I will happily take a new VW diesel regardless of what people may think. As far as I am concerned the numbers speak for themselves.

wake up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
is there any good cars that came out of USA to be a hot seller in Europe car market?
I don't thnik so.....

larry:

New diesel engines will start at -40F temperatures and run as clean as gasoline engines. They cost about 1500 dollars more than a gas engine but the fuel savings repays that in two years or less. Diesels have fewer breakdowns than gas engines and commonly go 250,000 miles without major trouble.

The big change is the digital direct fuel injection systems that atomize the fuel at 26,000 P.S.I. Thats not a typo, 26,000 pounds per square inch atomizes the diesel fuel so it burns clean. Also all diesel fuel sold in the US since September 2006 is low sulfur fuel so the black smoke is history.

New tech diesel cars are powerful clean and quiet. 50% of new cars in Europe run on diesel now. A diesel powered car will get 30 to 40% more MPG than the same car running on gasoline. Americans will learn to love the new diesels.

Note,,,Volkswagen Rabbit is the same car as the European Golf. It used to be called the Golf in the US until last year when the folks at VW decided to change the name.

rene:

wow, 2006 already

Duane Wirak:

Definitely, VW should make a diesel version
of the Rabbit. Give it a stick. Give it 4Motion, too.
I have the '04 R32 and it's great, but a Rabbit TDI would be fun, too. It would be great value.

Hey you guys are really behind the times - yes ...the rest of the world is at 60 mpg and I got my Dec 2006 made Jetta TDI diesel in April 2007 and have 48,000 miles on it. I get 44 to 48 mpg sitting in traffic around NYC and 52 to 60 on the highway - with a 6 speed automatic.
I am not at all unhappy about trading in my 2000 Audi A4 - 1.8T Quattro becasue this Jetta has all the same features and raod worthy ability (except the quattro) and gets two times better mpg.
These American gass guzzlers driving at 75 mph need to take a breath and stop climbing up my rear end - at 65mph on cruise control I am cruising at 54-56 mpg - so there - so all you V8's and rolling condominiums....get with the program.

Axel:

Unfortunately this side of the POND (USA, of course) is somewhat ignorant because its lawmakers are so too!! The day will come that DIESEL might rule but, until people's perception are changed it WILL not happen. I too want a DIESEL, but Im waiting for MINIUSA to get their Sh!t together. I almost bought the Jetta TDI here in Puerto Rico but the bank screwed me and THEMSELVES!! I will wait another year fo MINI or else VW here I come again, I owned a Rabbit 4 dr whom I swapped a GTI engine on it trust me I was FUN!!!! DIESEL engines here i come to bad I may have to ditch my MCS 02 with 215 Bhp, I might keep it for memories sake and play on weekends PRICELESS!!
