The Honda CRX is Finally Going to Return by 2011 as a Hybrid

1991civiccrxsi.jpg
The return of the much loved Honda CRX has been rumored for years. Earlier this year rumors circulated that Honda is working on a new CRX that will be based on the Fit platform. Now according to Winding Road, the next CRX is going to be a hybrid.

Thanks to the success of small cars like the MINI, Honda has rethought their ideas on a revival of the iconic CRX. For years the automaker refused to talk about a new CRX, but things have finally changed for the better.

When Honda released the Honda Insight Hybrid, it was very obvious that it looked like a modern day CRX. Well now product planners have decided that the next CRX will have a hybrid drivetrain, like the old Insight, although it will be called a CRX.

It was originally rumored that the CRX was going to return for 2009, but now it has been pushed back to 2011.

Is a hybrid, two-seater coupe really an adequate model to carry the CRX nameplate?

Erric:

The CRX was a great car. I hope some marketing guy doesn't ruin it. The CRX had performance, the Insight does not. This should be corrected, even if the new CRX will be a hybird.
I wonder why Honda never liked the CRX? It was WAY ahead of it's time.

JackCrackerMan:

Ahh yes, The CRX... I hope they keep the main body style true to the CRX and not "Hybrid" it out with some futuristik dumb look. Brings back high school memories of pulling up to someone and not being able to hear my car over theirs. (Damn those fart pipes!)

Sphere:

I'd certainly much prefer a small rear wheel drive car, but not with BMW's price tag.

Like the Chevy/Vauxhall Chevette (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_Chevette).

They even had a diesel in 1982, for those who like that kind of thing. A smallish rear wheel drive car, 130hp or so, maybe more, would certainly be fun to drive.

Why Honda or Acura can't bother with rear wheel drive cars AT ALL?? Can't they make it work efficiently, etc? Or they just don't care?

gm0n3y:

Hopefully it doesn't look like the Insight.

@Sphere

Agreed, there haven't been any good cheap RWD coupes since the 240sx.

I've been hoping for years that they would bring the CRX back. I don't know why they got rid of it in the first place. I had one in college that got close to 50mpg. Now that I have a family a 2 seat car isn't very practical.

I hope they keep the original design (minor changes to design). It would be cool with the hybrid but that might make it too expensive. It should not only have a CVT which would make it fun to drive but also very econimical too. A CVT would have the economy of a manual but the ease of an automatic.

I loved my 84 CRX. I put 50,000 miles on it in one year. :) Too bad I wrecked it driving under the speed limit.

I've hoped and prayed for a CRX for years and if it becomes a reality with a decent motor (I'm not opposed to hybrids, I own an Accord Hybrid, but it needs to be a good performer) then I'll be one of the first to put down a deposit.

kw:

Love my CRX. Have never understood Honda abandoning it. Fingers crossed for a new one.

I think with all the recent advancements in electrics and hybrids, it will be totally possible for Honda to faithfully resurrect the CRX as such. I am a current CRX owner and i love the car got some minor problem with its Honda catalytic converter - http://www.catalyticonverters.com/honda_catalytic_converter.html but was easily fixed. Sure, it isn’t out of this world fast but there is just something to it that makes people fall in love with it. If anyone can pull it off it will be Honda, let’s just hope they listen to their buying public on this one.

Sabby:

Speaking a small rwd vehicles, hopefully Pontiac will bring back the Fiero too! Now there was a car: mid-engine, rwd...

Brandon:

Why do you guys keep talking about RWD what the hell does that have to do with a CRX, The CRX was front wheel drive. Dumb asses

kw:

Many people prefer RWD for it's dynamics, which often provide advantages in racing performance that are difficult or, at a certain point, impossible to obtain with FWD.

However, it's often a point used by people who disdain any car with less than massive power.

scotty:

Oh great...

A whole new and updated generation of CRX's for young asians to pimp out. That's all we need... It'll be about .04 seconds until someone slaps some 19's with low-profiles on there...

I like the CRX as much as the next guy, but I've come to despise them over the years only because virtually all of them are pimped out in some way. It's a great car - minus the 19" tires and cheap looking body kits.

NoDos:

Scotty, why do you have to say asian kids? Your so ignorant. If you've ever attended a national event like NOPI Nationals, you'll see that its loved by everyone and asians are the least of them all.

Scotty:

NoDos, that wasn't the point of the comment, obviously. Don't loose sleep over it. Yes yes I know there's lots of people who pimp out cars... But the single largest demographic is most likely young asian kids. That, or it's probably pretty close.

Chris:

Scotty:

You've obviously never seen a mexican in a $300 beater car with $5,000 rims and a 6 TVs then.

Or a white person in a pimped out Honda pretending to be black blasting rap and wearing gold chains, etc.

In fact, all the ricers I see in Tucson are driven by mexicans or white boys that think they are black. I hardly ever see asians driving that crap.

Obviously DaMinority:

What scotty failed to mention is he lives in Korea

Peter:

If they bring back the CRX, I hope they bring back in at least two versions... the CRX HF (which would be a hybrid) and the CRX SI.

But I believe a CRX successor should be built off the Honda Fit platform, rather than the current Civic. The current Civic is too big to build a true CRX successor off of.

And the engine I'm envisioning in the CRX SI would be the 200HP 2.0L engine that is in the current Civic SI coupe.

civichatch eg:

if not we will make it our own hybrid by dropping a k20a2 in it lol

bg:

CRX with a K20 man that would be crazy lol

Web:

Stop everything! The CRX was cool the way it was. If they brought back the same exact 91'.. Cool looking, cheap, good on gas and fun. They would make so much money if they brought back the same exact car!!! Don’t put all of the new electronics in it! All that does is kill the gas mileage! Give me a new 91' CRX si.. But they won’t. They will screw it up with those shitty looking wheels and things they put on the gay ass hybrids. Why do the hybrids have to look so stupid?? It’s awful.. I would buy a hybrid if they didn’t look like a piece of shit. Make the new Civic a hybrid with SI wheels and body!!! I think these car companies need some new designers!!! Its like they know gays buy them so they make them look gay too.. 91 CRX SI... same pricing, same engine, same wheels... EVERYTHING EXACTLY THE WAY IT WAS...

lewis:

i own a white crx it does mad skids and i like it that way they shouldn change them to some stingy hybrid car makes it look pathetic anyone here with me?

marc dolphin:

i too loved the honda crx si 88-91 models!
the hf was sweet too, just not enough power as all the si models i have owned....i was trying to find these cars in the united kindom, but found out all about importing and why it isn't something many can afford to do?
it could run anywhere up to $25,000 to get an imported version from the uk to conform to us epa standards...BOOOO!!!
DAMN IT HONDA...WAKE UP...20008 "IF IT AIN'T BROKE,DON'T TRY AND FIX IT"
GO BACK TO THE 88-91 CRX,HF SI MODELS,NO DX...AND THEN WHILE YOUR AT IT...PUT THE 90-91 HATCHBACK SI BACK INTO PRODUCTION AND MAKE ALL THESE CARS STAY CLOSE IN LOOKS TO THE 88-91 WITH BETTER PERFORMACE....UP IN THE 260-300 HORSE POWER RANGE...YOU WILL BE THE TOP CAR SELLER AGAIN...TRUST ME...CRX...c-r-x...CrX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
