Chrysler is Planning on Being a Leader in Dual-Clutch Transmissions

Chrysler and its partner Getrag have built a $530 million gearbox plant in Indiana to build 700,000 dual-clutch transmissions per year starting in 2009.

Getrag owns the dual-clutch technology that reportedly improves fuel-economy and acceleration. According to Automotive News, the first Chrysler cars with the technology will be out in 2010 and will be powered by the new Phoenix V6 engine.

The new dual-clutch transmissions will have six speeds and should improve gas mileage by 6% compared to normal transmission.

My God, we need Cerberus to take over the White House... vote for Private Equity Funds in 08'! I mean, if they can take this POS of a manufacturer and do something like engineer a decent car, PLUS all the rest we have heard recently, just imagine what they could do with the catastro-f(_)ck in Iraq! mass producing it will help drive price down and make it standard in most cars. it is efficient and more fun.

I've been waiting years for this. It's like the best of both worlds. You get a smooth quick shifting auto for when you're just driving to work. And you also get a fun paddle shift transmission when you're driving for entertainment.

Ok so they might have a decent tranny now but how about the rest of the car? If that's still crap than it doesn't really matter if they have a dual clutch transmission or not.

Kyle could not be more right, but hey, if they are this forward thinking at Cerberus, maybe they'll even deal away with the old pushrod V6 and used DOHC! Heck, they may even (I god do I dare dream) make an engine that takes full advantage of E85s high octane rating via a highly increased compression ratio. Who wants to see an E85 car with 340 hp and 30 mpg? In the city? eh eh?

Heck, if they can pull off that last part, I'm going to get a Private Equity Fund named the godfather of my child. PEFs ftw!

What does Cerberus have to do with this? The takeover isn't exactly complete just yet. And since the news here is that the plant was just built, it's probably safe to assume that this was in the works quite a while before Daimler decided to dump Chrysler.

You just turn your left foot sideways and move it back and forth (heel for one clutch and the toes for another)! It gives a whole new meaning to "heel-and-toe double clutching".

E85 is about the worst way to improve gas milage due to its lower energy content per unit. Direct injection gas or diesel would be a much better option.
