According to the Detroit Free Press, Chrysler has nixed plans for the large Imperial sedan. The main reason the plans were scrapped are because of the pending legislation in the U.S. Congress that will increase fuel-efficiency standards. The Chrysler Imperial would have been the largest and heaviest car in Chrysler's lineup.
Chrysler spokesman David Elshoff said, “The decision to build the Imperial concept was always contingent upon our ability to create a profitable business case for the vehicle. In light of the current economic climate and the climate for restrictive fuel efficiency legislation, we can’t justify a business case to add that vehicle."
Elshoff also said, “Frankly it would’ve been irresponsible to bring that car to market,”
Instead of focusing on the Imperial, the automaker is going to focus more on the next generation 300 sedan.

This is the first smart thing Chrysler has done in a long time...what an unbelievably ugly car. The Imperial got trashed in the car show reviews...and yet it got initially approved for production anyway.

I can't give this move the 'the first smart thing Chrysler has done in a long time' award, but I can give it the 'second smart thing' award.
I gave the 'first smart thing' award to the hopes that they actually make good on their pushing the double-clutch techology.

I think it's kind of sad, they had the Concept car at a local car show I went to roughly a year ago in Ann Arbor, I got to peek inside, the interior was impressive, very well put together, and just about the most posh/comfortable Interior I have ever seen, the car looks a lot better when it's not in Pictures as well.
Hopefully they will bless the next 300 with some of the interior quality this car was overflowing with.

So when is Mercedes going to axe their S class and BMW their 7 series? Are those not 5000+ lb heavy luxury cars with shitty 11 MPG as well?
Why doesn't anyone bash them for being non green and irresponsible for having big heavy gas guzzlers? Hmm?

Chris,
Because Mercedes & BMW don't sell large quantities of gas guzzling pickup trucks and SUV's that ruin their CAFE numbers like Chrysler. Hemi V-8 & V-10 Pickup Trucks cause Chryslers CAFE Averages to look bad and they don't sell enough fuel efficent vehicles th make up for it. It is not just Chrysler, this problem plagues GM and Ford as well. Personally, I dont think Chrysler needs a vehicle like this. I bit of work on the 300 will suffice. What Chrysler needs is a small car along the lines of the Mazda 3. They have no small cars in their line up right now. I do not consider the Caliber/Compass a replacement for a car.

I never understood why someone would buy a V10 truck, when the diesel varient had more power, was more HD, and was more efficient.

Usually the diesel engine adds ~$5000 to the price tag where the V10 adds only about $500.
