2010 Porsche Cayenne Hybrid Will be Able to Drive at 70mph Using Only the Electric Motor

When the new Porsche Cayenne Hybrid comes to market in 2009 or 2010 it will feature the ability to travel at 70mph without the use of the gas powered motor.

The gasoline engine will help propel the SUV up to 70mph and once it achieves that cruising speed the engine will shut off and the electric motor will be used to maintain that speed.

The hybrid is being developed with Audi and Bosch and it will achieve 26.8 mpg. It is expected to start around $44,000.

Rafael Fernandes:

Simple question:

70mph for how long? (i couple of minutes probably).

If they said the the gas engine would be working in steady middle rpm (economic range) and only recharging the battery, with the electric engine being responsible for powering the wheels, it would sound much better...

Come on porsche, you can do much better...

Travis:

one would presume that the gas engine will kick on and off at 70 mph to keep things going.

anyways from what I am reading on other sites it will get 32 mpg Highway, and 26.8 mixed cycle. compared to the 18.2 mixed cycle for the current Cayenne. And that is a pretty impressive jump, in economy. I also read 75 mph for the electric motor and not 70.

Allen:

No time for this but I say that this is Porsche, a company with plenty of cash for R&D and a long history of doing just that. A few years ago they bumped the HP of the engine from 450 to 500 and increased fuel economy. Now they are just going to do it again.

Porsche can do this. And as to staying at 70 mph, I'd expect it to actually hold that speed for quite long. Someone made the dumbass comment that it;d only do it for a couple of minutes, i'll wager hours. Rafael, you do know that there are electric cars that outrun Ferraris and Lambos right? And that one of them can go 300 miles on one charge?

Rafael Fernandes:

Allen,

In fact, i do know. I just finished my major in computer engineering and I work in a electrical engineer research group.

I dont have the numbers here right know.. but taking the prius as an example:

Prius = 1254.2 kg (2765 lb)

Porsche Cayenne = aprox. 2500 kg

Even with more batterys added the prius cant go further than 40 miles only with the electric engine (research for EV mode).

So, even if porsche fit the cayenne with 3 times the amount of batterys that the prius have, i wouldnt do better.

Allen,

I know how much torque electrical engines have. Thats why they would easily out run a ferrari in aceleration, BUT you have to power them, by cable or battery, and both are still not good enough for mobile things (cars, ships, planes).
TGV (in france/UK) is a good example of their power...

Just to be clear, i have nothing against the people that develop hybrid or plug in cars. i do like the idea, what a dont like though, is the way they announce it, try to foul people. I would be much more clever to porsche to announce that the have a new cayenne hybrid that almost double the mpg.
