2009 BMW X6 Sports Activity Coupe Takes Shape...Is This the Ultimate X5?

bmwx6spyroof_2_560.jpg
BMW's new X6 SAC (Sports Activity Coupe) has been caught several times during hot weather testing. The latest spy photos gave us a better glimpse at its distinctly slopping roofline, similar to the Mercedes CLS that gives it the "Coupe" label. CarMagazine has posted a few new photo renderings of what they believe BMW's newest 4x4 will look like when it debuts at the Frankfurt Auto Show this September.

The X6 is differentiated from its X5 brother by its distinct rear end and overall sportier styling.

The new X6 will debut this fall with production starting sometime next year at BMW's Spartanburg plant in South Carolina.

The engine options will be similar to those in the X5. That means the 3.0L and 4.8L engines will also carryover into this model.

I thought Coupe meant 2 doors? I see 4 on this one. Looking at it it seems to fit the definition of Wagon more than Coupe. Next thing you know BMW will release a new Z4 and call it a Half-Ton Pickup

gm0n3y:

I agree, this is definitely more wagon than coupe. Does anybody (in North America) even buy these things?

DrFill:

Looks a lot like the current, and future, Lexus RX!

Coupe?!

I agree with Dr. Fill, looks like an updated Lexus RX 350/400

If this is a coupe, so is the Lexus, I would imagine.

Obviously DaMinority:

With that body cladding on the bottom and the weird slanted hatch, it looks a little like the Pontiac Aztek, as well as the current RX (which I am amazed nobody else thinks looks like the Aztek in profile).

Coupe not only means 2 doors, but it means a body style that doesn't support more than 2 doors, and has a fixed roof and a trunk (or no non-engine-end storage), not a hatch. Therefore, this is no coupe.

More importantly, I hope they bring this to the US as the X5, it's awful and maybe they'll concentrate on making great coupes with fabulous drivetrains like they should.

Jason:

Everyone is so quick to say it looks like the Lexus... Just a few years ago the IS was a blatant 3-series copy. Too bad it sucked and still does.

Japan has always been notorious for copying anything. This X6 just so happens to look similar to the RX.

I would consider buying this. Look how many people buy the Infiniti FX/Nissan Murano. They both look weird but then again it's a different type of vehicle. I'd prefer to have a vehicle that's not related to and/or shares parts with a Toyota Camry/Corolla, Nissan Altima/Maxima or a Honda Accord/Civic and pay more for standard leather seats.

Taz:

I live in the UK and I really cannot think of a group of people to which this car will appeal to. BMW have tapped (more like created) a niche market for an "activity coupe" for which I think there will little demand in the UK at least.
