2009 BMW M3 Convertible Spy Photos...The M3 Version Will Also Get the Retractable Hardtop

3bmwm3cspycrop.jpg
Spy photographers caught the upcoming convertible version of the BMW M3 testing in Germany. The interesting fact about these photos is that the convertible has the same retractable hardtop as the regular 3-Series convertible. It had been rumored that BMW was going to use a lighter cloth top for the M3 version.

There is no word on the final specs of the convertible M3, but it will debut this September at the Frankfurt Auto Show.

What happened to all that independent thinking? Did they really sit around and think, yeah, our superconvertible will be just great if it's a couple hundred pounds heavier than it has to be.

Remy LeBeau:

....Except that most people who really care about performance wouldn't buy a convertible, so it doesn't really matter if it's a couple hundred pounds more. People buy convertibles to look cool, not to win races.

To be honest, in that price range, I'd expect ANY convertible to have a retractable hard top, regardless of the performance penalty. I just can't get my head around buying a 50K+ car that comes with a cloth top.

I'm kind of surprised though that it doesn't have the CF roof, I would have thought that they would have at least done that (unless they painted it).

Chris:

Or worse than cloth top, how about spending $50,000 on a Porsche that has a plastic vinyl back window when a $10,000 Mustang convertible has glass with a defroster?

Thankfully Porsche fixed that in 2003.

Obviously DaMinority:

Good point Remy, I agree except for all those pesky Miatas that win all those parking lot Gymkhanas.

This time, my point wasn't stupid consumers, it was BMW pretending to be concerned about performance first, everything else second. You make my point though, BMW sells what people want, not what makes the best performance vehicle.
