More Spy Photos of the Upcoming BMW 1-Series...This Time it is Red

We are all eagerly awaiting the arrival of the smaller than a 3-Series BMW 1-Series coupe and convertible. Last week photos of a charcoal coupe circulated the internet and now we have two more photos of the coupe thanks to Member Advevo of 1addicts.com.

The coupe seen here is likely the 135i with a M Sports package.

Noya:

I haven't heard much about the 1-series.

What's the rumored engine/trans/cost?

Casey:

Re: Noya

It is rumored that the top engine will the same 3.0L inline six that is currently in the 335i.

Remy LeBeau:

The low end 1-series should be around $25,000 and they're guessing up to $35,000 or so for a 135i (if they make one...I hope they do!)

Spikke:

An M1 would be wonderful.

Remy LeBeau:

That would most likely be the 135i. They'll (almost definitely) never use the term M1 for it because of the difference between the M1 and the M-series as we know it today.

IceBlade:

the 1 series is well established in the euro market as a 5door/hatchback, there is even a diesel and sport diesel(135 - 150 hp not exactly sure of the figures).
Whats new is the coupe and lets hope they keep the rear wheel drive train on the cross Atlantic journey.

There's never been a front-wheel drive BMW, so I can give you a 99.9999999999999999999999999999% guarantee that they will.

BigD:

A Mini is front wheel drive and made by BMW, so it's not that far out, but fwd is unlikely...

BMW owns Mini, but essentially it's a separate company. Yes, they now use BMW engines, but it's still a separate company. I'm talking about BMW, not any company that they own or any cars they built under license from another company (such as Isetta's).

gm0n3y:

If they bring the 135i here and it has the same 6 cylinder as the 335i (and assuming it is quite a bit smaller / lighter), that will be one quick little car.

Darmok:

They are saying that the 130 will have the same 3.0 I-6 that they used on the old 330, and that is the one that will be $25k. Should be a fun little car for a good price if that's accurate.

Bimmerman:

Since the 335i has comparable acceleration to the E46 M3 (the current one), the much lighter 135i should be able to out accelerate both....I'm already saving.

And yes, it will be rwd. Europe doesn't have the awd craziness fad that we do here, viewing awd as a winter driving aid only. Regardless, the car was not engineered to accept an awd or fwd drivetrain, and to put one in for the US market would be prohibitively expensive. And no, BMW doesn't do fwd BMWs. MINI isn't BMW, it's a subsidiary.
