GM is going to build a new range of diesel in engines in 2009. The new 4.5L V8 will have class leading torque, power and refinement. According to GM, the new Duramax turbo-diesel will boost efficiency by 25 percent, while cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 13 percent and nitrogen oxide emissions by 90 percent.
The new engine will produce 310 horsepower and 520 lb-ft of torque and it will be used in many of GM's new light-duty trucks and the HUMMER H2. It is also compliant with the new 2010 emissions standards and will meet emissions standards in all 50 states.

I wish people would stop bashing American motors. All of the top selling cars in the US are made in the US anyway...
I welcome the thought that GM and can itself from its blunders of the past. But if they do and I really think they want to, we are going to have good cars coming back from our original auto makers (US).
Thanks

Andrew, the top selling American cars ARE made in the US, but they are not American brands. Toyota makes the top selling sedan (Camry), for instance. SUVs are still top selling from America, but in luxury cars its not Cadillac and Lincoln leading the pack.
I for one hope all three of the big three finally get it real rough. Nothing, not even Toyota taking the worlds biggest auto maker slot, has shaken them back to reality yet.

The Toyota diesel is all-new. It's only been on sale a few months, so I'm sure the technology is up to date. I suspect it's tuned to meet the (more agricultural) needs of the Aussie commercial-grade Land Cruiser 70. I think there's a lot of untapped potential there. Certainly if it comes Stateside for Tundra duty it will be tuned much higher than that. Surely hate to just see this kin of car under a GMC car cover... LOL...

So, if this new diesel fits in the normal v8 location.. could we see a diesel hybrid tahoe?
This engine is supposed to give 25% better mileage than gas (given the 28% higher energy in diesel, that's not really a suprise), and the hybrid Tahoe is supposed to be 25% more efficient than standard.
Doing some math (yes, I know that may be too many assumptions) but we could conceivably see a 25+ city/30 highway Tahoe, with TONS of torque. 520lb/ft. from diesel, another 150 from electric? WOW!!!
