Chrysler Admits That the Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Nitro are Duds

Apparently Chrysler executives have admitted to their employees that the automaker misjudged the market for the new Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Nitro SUV. In a recent Q&A session a top Chrysler executive addressed the issues with Chrysler employees and assured them that the automaker is moving fast to correct the mistakes.

Executives are upset that Chrysler misjudged the market and their competitors. The automaker set their standards too low and missed the mark on such things as fuel-economy, interior quality and noise and vibration levels.

According to Bob Lee, head of powertrain engineering, "Our management has admitted that some of our competitors moved faster in some areas than we had anticipated and hence although we matched their previous position and added some improvements, we didn't set targets aggressive enough."

The Sebring and Nitro have been criticized for their low quality interiors, noisy engines and poor handling.

The new Sebring was rated 16th out of 16 family sedans by Consumer Reports.

What about the Jeep Compass or the Dodge Avenger? They also have pretty bad interiors.

Chrysler's Action Plan:
-Source more parts and materials from low-cost countries.
-Invest more in vehicle interiors.
-Use an interior design studio to focus on improving the customer experience.
-They hired ASI Consulting Group, which worked with Hyundai to help them better understand customer needs.
-They are modifying how performance metrics are set.

The info was not meant to go public, but it is authentic.

How about the quality in the drivetrain like the transmissions and a the 6cyl engines?

Does this admission also allow for people with past problems to finally get some repairs on the defective chryslers?

Mat:

Mitchell, I wouldn't classify a cheap interior or a noisy engine as things that can be "repaired".

"-Source more parts and materials from low-cost countries."

Yeah, that's what needs to be done, lay off local workers...who will buy the cars then?

mr.ed:

If they want to make amends and appear credible, they'll buy back and scrap the bad ones, correct the problems, and have the CEO and board commit hara-kiri. Very international.

I have to ask, does the top brass even come out and sit in these piles of crap? Do they have same price point Jap cars there to see the competition?

I mean look at the Nitro. It looks like an early 90's first gen. Ford Explorer with an over the top body kit lol.

And the Sebring...Enterprize anyone?

"Ok so people think that the interiors are low quality and pretty bad in design. They think our engines are noisey and the handling of our cars is crap. What shall we do about it?"

"Source more parts and materials from low cost countries."

"Great idea !!! That will save us money so we can all get a pay rise...can some one pass another beer....burp...."

Longdxcommuter:

This is exactly why Chrysler is in trouble.
How did a profitable car company go to the crapper so quickly? It is simple, ignore the reliability problems that plagued their products ( bad transmission, poor fit/finish, and poor dealer services). Ignore consumer demands ( great offer even more SUVs in a time of high gas prises...brilliant)

dusty muscle cars:

All things mentioned about the Nitro are true, but I think everyone has missed the the ride quality of the beast. I've driven a few trying to decide if I wanted to actually buy it. I was a Dodge service manager in the '60's and '70's.I have driven all that they had to offer.Having owned nothing but Chry.Corp. vehicles since 1960, I must say It had the worst ride I have ever experenced. It was almost as bad as driving a torsion bar car with a broken bar. What were they thinking !!!

I love it! Let's just copy our competitors and hope that they don't make any advancements to challenge the status quo!

Chazzman:

I used to love it when Chrysler set the benchmarks in styling! It seems now that they are merely trying to keep up with the Joneses but the Joneses are so far ahead now that Chrysler has no chance of catching up. Chrysler rushed to bring the new Sebring out with that gawdawful Crossfire wannabe styling and didn't notice that Chevrolet was reworking their Malibu platform int what looks like a very effective design with better fuel mileage and much nicer interior and exterior than the Sebring! Shame on you Chrysler!

Rick Hough:

Not only is the Nitro plug ugly, it doesn't go or handle - on or off road. What on earth possessed Chrysler?

Go to New York, take a look at the Chrysler building, and design us something that has the elegance and intelligence of your founders master work, then come back to the market.

ALLEN:

THE NITRO IS NOT UGLY IT'S TOUGH LOOKING; THE SEBRING LOOKS GREAT I THINK PEOPLE WANT TO PUT CHRYSLER DOWN MY PARENTS AND I HAVE HAD PASSED CHRYSLERS LIKE ARIES K; CARAVANS AND DAKOTA TRUCKS AND HAVE LASTED FOREVER NO PROBLEMS GIVE THE NITRO A TRY I LOVE MINE IT'S GREAT AND THE PRICE ISN'T BAD

andy rodriguez:

i bought a dodge nitro, it has about 4,000 miles and its been nothing but problems. it has stalled while driving and it has died out. the service tech fixed it six times. replacing the computer the keys sensors and much more. my file is being looked at but i already know what's going to be the out come "nothing" until i crash and injure my family or another person. i was told they were going to buy it back but those were just words, nothing has been put down on paper or files just get lost. this car is unsafe and i hope they take it off the road. who wants a care that could stall at any time, "not me"................

I bought a new 2008 Nitro on Jan 1st, and in most respects have thoroughly enjoyed the vehicle. I really like the retro touches, the very simple lines, the mean looking front end. It's also very room inside, which is important as I am 6'-1" (short side of tall).

My only REAL complaint is the programming and operation of the 4-speed automatic transmission and the torque converter. It's as if they are convinced this is an overgrown Prius or something. I'd be more than willing to sacrifice 0.1mpg or so, if the thing would shift properly, that is to say, NOT shift to a higher gear when that would bring the RPMs down to a mere 1200 (which is NOT enough to propel this thing unless going downhill with a tailwind).

Other than that, awesome vehicle! And a bit on the rare side, thank you! Due to the "lifetime" powertrain warranty (to first owner), I plan on keeping my Nitro a long time!

Nitro Owner:

Nitro Ugly! Mine is the best looking truck/suv on the road today. I have the R/T, so I cannot speak to the early problems with the 3.7L V6 and/or the 4speed auto-trans, as my Nitro comes with the 265hp 4.0L V6, and 5speed auto-trans with 4WD. I down sized from my Toyota Sequoia Limited and have been very happy that I did. With the stock 21 inch performance wheels and tires and improved suspension that comes stock on the R/T version of the Nitro, it handles very well on the mountain roads to my home and the only cars that have passed me since buying it are one Corvette and one Porsche Carerra Turbo and a couple motorcycles. 26,500+ miles so far and NO problems. Very satisfied owner and I average between 21 and 23 mpg combined driving that includes climbing 8,000ft of mountain roads about once a week.
