This morning on his way into work one of our dedicated readers spotted a BMW 1-Series Hatch driving west towards Santa Monica. The car had virtually no camouflage, except for the BMW logo which was blacked out.
I wonder why they are testing this car here, since we are rumored to only get the new coupe and convertible versions of this model. Any ideas?
Thanks Casey for the Tip!

Um, I've seen BMW 1-Series in LA before with Mexican plates. It's pretty common to see "Europe-only" cars here, since we're near the border.

The BMW 1 doesn't look any smaller then the BMW 3...
Whats the point?

The 1-Series is smaller than the 3-Series, in fact, its a lot closer to the early 3-Series.
And this is part of BMW's plan, as they have stated that some of the people that loved the 2002 and the 320i left BMW as the 3-Series got bigger, and they want those people back.

That's got the be the ugliest rear end I've ever seen. I sure hope they still have some of the rear masked off.

I spotted this car in Burbank in fall 2006 (from what I remember) with the logos blacked out. I had recently returned from a trip in europe where the 1-series 2.0 liter turbodiesels are everywhere, so it was all the more eyecatching to me. US BMW afficionados, say what you will about the looks, the TD version of this beast gets 60MPG and in person it's not bad to look at. I also saw one in Mexico. Though neither BMW Mexico or BMW Canada are officially importing them.
