2008 Volkswagen Tiguan SUV Revealed Before Its Official Unveiling this Fall

tiguan_front.jpg
These are the first official pictures of the new 2008 Tiguan SUV that is going to be revealed at the Frankfurt Auto Show this September. The new small VW SUV will compete against the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV-4 and will have AWD standard.

In Europe there will be three different TSI motors that all displace 1.4L with 150, 170 and 200 horsepower. There will also be two TDi diesel engines that displace 2.0L and produce 140 and 170 horsepower.

The US powertrain specs have not been released. Is it safe to assume that it will be offered with the 170 horsepower 2.5L 5-cylinder and the 200 horsepower 2.0L turbo from the current US VW lineup? A diesel would also be nice.

The Tiguan will be in showrooms in Europe by the end of the year.

gm0n3y:

Not that ugly for a Volkswagen. In fact, that is probably the only decent looking Volks that I've seen since the Scirrocco (or however its spelled) in the 80s and the upcoming one.

Doug:

with a name like Tiguan i was expecting something revolting like the subaru B9 Tribeca but this VW is a think of beauty.

Noranne:

Looks like a BMW X3 and an X5 hybrid.

Rob:

There is now way this model can compete with the CR-V and RAV-4. It looks to be too small in the rear for cargo capicity. I think it will be comperable to the smaller models like the Subaru Forester or KIA's Sportage - but I doubt VW will match KIAs price:). All in all, I think it will probably be a loner in a class of its own - which might be good for VW.

SS:

Remarkably heinous looking.

Erric:

All small SUVs are starting to look the same.
How boring.

Mat:

It looks to share many lines as Audi's A3.

Rafael Fernandes:

Is it just me or a 1.4 liter 200 bhp sounds weird?! I mean... i know its perfectly possible, but, for a "stock" car... i dont know...

200 bhp is the very same amount you get from the fabulous 2.0 fsi turbo engine from audi (audi a3 turbo, and others)

Jourdan:

That 200 bhp 1.4L is from the famous twin charge engine the 1.4TSI.. It got supercharge and turbocharge together.. While others are all turbocharge with either low (150) or High (170) pressure turbo with water cooled intercooler.. All engine are direct injected.. Their new GT golf also using the twin charge engine 1.4 TSI.. Europe engines are all Euro4 nowadays.. So their emission is clean thx to its engine technology and new improve converter..

Rafael Fernandes:

Jourdan,

I knew they have made a turbo+compressor 1.4 engine.. but i didnt know it was that poweful... Anyway, i think they went to far.. i mean... i little bit more displacement with a modern turbo (variable pressure) would do the same with less complications (less to go wrong, less to repair in the future)

I didnt have the chance to drive one of these "hyper 1.4" but from what i read they are not smooth as they should be.. i drove the a3 2.0 fsi turbo.. and that engine is awesome!

Obviously DaMinority:

Weep not, all lovers of the Fox (VW not Audi) Wagon, your replacement has arrived!

Michael:

The 200 hp TSI is not a 1.4 liter engine, but a 2.0 liter one. In fact, I think it is the same 2.0 liter TFSI, but with another name.
Tiguan has the same dimensions as RAV4 and it is a little bit smaller than CRV. It has a sliding back seat and a rear cargo capacity of 470 liters compared to RAV4 with only 410.
The advantages of Tiguan vs RAV4 and CRV? The "Track&Field" version with its "Off-road Mode" and the state of the art DSG automatic gear.

Itayi:

I am not technical, but I watch a lot of top gear, I am fascinated by the 1.4 ltr producing 150bhp
