Jalopnik has posted several photos of the upcoming 2008 Toyota Land Cruiser. As we all know the Land Cruiser is built on the same platform as the recently revealed 2008 Lexus LX570. From the photos it looks like the new Land Cruiser will look almost the same us the new Lexus.
With gas prices as high as they are it is amazing that automakers are still churning out these huge gas guzzling SUVs. With the upcoming all-new 2008 Toyota Sequoia also in the works, where does the new Land Cruiser fit in the Toyota lineup?

Land Cruiser is a global market model off course ppl will still buy it. In most asian country the diesel LC is the bread and butter model for toyota.
Does Toyoto USA actually export the Sequioa to Asian countries and if yes how many?

Who still buys this thing? Australian's do. Anywhere outside a capital city, seems like one out of 2 cars is a LandCruiser.

...and the 25 Statute Miles per Imperial Gallon and the 200-plus HP he gets with it, does NOT qualify as a GASGUZZLER in my book...

Great. A fancier way to waste gas and massage your ego.

Takes the same amount of gas as two trips in an econobox. - and half the time.

An econobox won't get into 90% of the backwoods where I like to go, let alone carry gear for a week...this is CANADA.

I live in Texas and a lot of people buy SUVs and Trucks. If some of you didn't know, there are even a lot of hybrid trucks and SUVs already out on the market that a lot of people buy. These white folk love their big trucks but understand the value of having a hybrid too. Ford, Chevy, and Toyota have come through on that front. Also, FYI, these new enormous diesel trucks from Dodge, GM, and Ford get much better gas mileage and are leaps and bounds cleaner than they were a generation or two ago. Diesel tech has come a long way in the last few years.
I personally don't like trucks because they drive like crap. Down there though, short while ladies love the security of the big, brawny SUV like the Landcruiser. You don't see many men driving huge SUVs actually. They're actually a menace when you pair a WASP+Cell phone+SUV. Its a dangerous combination but thats just what our gals like. YEEEEEE HAW!

"Who would STILL buy this thing??" What kind of loaded title is that?
This Marc, editor who posted this note, is really on a mission against SUV. He must really think only idiots would buy this car. In my mind, he is the idiot.
Try to car pooling three kids for the hockey game, with all the gear. Se if you can fit that in a Passat. I tried, you can't!
Try to go on vacation to North Lake Tahoe in the winter, with snowy roads, ski and snowboard gear, wife and threed kids, maybe one kids friend. Try to put that on an econobox.
If you have a boat, a bike trailer, or live in rugged areas in the country, you'd want such a car. You don't need much imagination. Even if you don't put this car off road, or tow: if you have lots of kids and gear, this is one good option, that does not look as bad a Van (with the poor resale value to boot). And the mileage is not bad!
I think the editors of this site are teenagers, or people without wife and kids.

I'm sure the author of this blog thinks anything larger than a Nissan Versa is extreme excess and should be banned from the road. The reality is that people has ALWAYS wanted large vehicles and the price of gasoline is secondary to the experience of getting from point A to point B in as much comfort and serenity as possible.
When the author has 2.5 kids, and all the paraphernalia associated with those kids, and needs to driver further than the local supermarket, he'll probably be changing his tune.

Ideally you could have a large vehicle to cart around kids or gear, and a small car to drive when you're alone. These vehicles themselves are not really the problem. It's the people who drive them with no reason to drive them other than because they think it's cool.
The other problem with SUVs is that there are more efficient vehicles to drive when you have kids, namely minivans and wagons. SUVs are often purchased by people with kids who use the kids as an excuse to buy the biggest SUV possible with the biggest engine possible. Mostly because they don't want to look like people who have kids.

Yet if it was a BMW that had 300 HP and weighed 5,000 lbs with its 15 TVs and got 12 mpg, it would be praised as an engineering marvel and the next best thing since sliced bread.
*rolls eyes*

Minivans hold their value very poorly. If you compare minivan with a similar size SUV, you tell me who would lose more resale value in the long run? Minivans are not great for howling either. No v8s there. Even if you don't have a boat, you'd like to have the flexibility to at least tow a U-Haul trailer or something. Plus, minivans are mostly ugly. That is a very common reason to avoid a car, in my book. Nothing to do with "look like they have kids". I love my kids, don't hide them when I'm unloading their gear, quite the opposite. You don't know what you are talking about, Darmok. I just won't be caught dead in a van. If you can't understand why looks matter in a car, if efficiency is all that matters to you, you're in the wrong website. Lots of sportcars, BMWs and Mercs, here, too few econoboxes and Kias minivans for you.

Rich people, in America it costs more than an Escalade.

In Saudi Arabia, you cannot throw a rock on the highway without hitting an LC. And 95 octane gas is about 65 cents US per gallon.
And an Escalade is basically a duded up Yukon.

The Lexus LX570 is a barely duded up Land Cruiser and it starts $12K more than the Escalade.

I own a big Ford SUV for it's CORRECT purpose. Someone posts: "What's the use for these thiings?" I tow a travel trailer for recreation and I have a utility trailer for hauling building materials. Smaller vehicles will not pull these trailers. Those who do not ever tow or haul heavy loads should buy minvans or cars. My SUV puts out less than 2% of the pollutants that an ecoterrorist Volkswagen bus does.
You folks that think SUV's should be outlawed do not understand what an RV is. It can be a travel trailer that costs less than 10% the cost of a large motorhome that most of us cannot afford. See http://www.gorving.com/ So yes, there are constructive uses for big SUV's. By the way, most of my miles are driven in a Honda Civic.
The market should decide what companies produce. This is America and we should have the freedom to choose, not allow a bunch of downtown Manhattan yuppies determine our choices for us. You'd feel pretty ticked off if they outlawed double cheeseburgers just because they thought they are not good for you. Enjoy your car, allow others to enjoy theirs. It isn't your money or your time that is invested in it, so stop acting like you should have an opinion about what others should be allowed to drive.
Good for Toyota! They are producing what people want: dependable, high quality vehicles. Don't forget; they make the Prius Hybrid.

Land cruiser/LX 470/570 are more reliable and better in every categories than Range Rover/Escalade, Look at Toyota sales and profit margin world wide that speak volume, America/British auto makers excluding Rolls Royce and Bentley need to go back to the drawing board and find ways to improve it products. Come on, Toyota now have enough cash to buy GMAC, the so called largest Auto marker in the world? Last time I checked Rover Group has change ownership form BMW to (cash stricken)Ford.

The current Land Cruiser is a terrific vehicle though its Toyota pickup parts are a bit outdated compared to competitors. The only reason I'd be interested in upgrading is new features, more power and better efficiency. But unfortunately - based on these photo's - the only good thing I can say about his new design is that I won't have to look at it when I'm driving!

kudos to toyota for the new landcruiser, but i really think they should drop the 5.7 litre gas V8 and stick with the 4.5 litre turbodiesel V8. this would give it the same gas mileage as your average gas powered midsize car while keeping the same hauling capabilities that people buy these things for.
I really dont think SUVs should be banned, I think petrol engines should be banned in SUVs. Hybrids suck, thier performance is grossly inconsistent and they have the same gas mileage as conventional gas powered vehicles under load. Modern diesels rock, drive one and you will agree.
