2008 Chevrolet Colorado May Get More Power Thanks to a New V8

Inside sources are confirming that the 2008 Chevrolet Colorado midsize pickup is going to have a V8 option. The V8 will be the same small block 5.3L V8 that is in the 2008 Hummer H3 Alpha. The engine is good for 295 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque.

Currently the 2007 Colorado has two engines: A 2.9L inline-four cylinder with 185 horsepower and a 3.7L inline five-cylinder with 242 horsepower.

If GM does indeed put the V8 in the Colorado it will go head to head with the Dodge Dakota, which is the only other mid-size truck that offers a V8. The Top selling Toyota Tacoma and Ford Ranger pickups are going to be left in the dust...

About Time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The 5 cyl really was not cutting it. The thing could barely pull a 3000lb trailer. This cannot come soon enough.

"The engine is good for 295 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque."

Are you kidding me? I got 300 lb-ft in my ranger 3.0 TDI here in brazil...

The F250 that ford sells here go out with a 4.0 TDI the produces 368 lb-ft.

I know diesels do better in torque, but guys at Chevrolet could do much better than this with a 5.7 V8

Unless Toyota fits their 4.7L V8 under the hood.

Oh yeah, let's not forget MPG and resale value.

Freaking rednecks...

George_in_VA:

Hmmm... I smell an import snob (Noya).

That aside, I agree with Rafael about diesels. GM should offer diesels in their small pickups. Honda's Ridgeline will be getting a six-cylinder diesel in the very near future, and given today's gas prices and the diesel's great torque capacity, moves like that make perfect sense.

Mark:

Noya,

The trucks with the best MPG are domestics, not imports (29 mpg for the 4 cyl Ford Ranger vs 28 for the Tacoma)
(23 mpg for the regular cab 2wd Chevy Silverado with the 5.3 vs 18 for the regular cab 2wdToyota Tundra with the 5.7) as for resale value, The Tundra is too new to predict but so far the resale value winner has pretty much been in Chevy's court since 1963.

Research before you post.

Obviously DaMinority:

This truck doesn't need power, it needs towing capacity and a new interior.

mark:

if the colorado gits a v8 in 08 im gitting one

Are you poeple kidding me. Somone said the 225hp 5 cyclinder wont even pull a 3000 lb trailer. I got news for ya dude, I tow a 19ft flats boat with a chevy lumina (160hp). No problems whatsoever.
300hp in a mid size truck is waaay enough, if not too much. To the moron in Brazil, you cannot compare diesel and gas in torque.
If 317ftlbs of torque isnt enough for you then you dont need a mid size truck, you need a FULL SIZE TRUCK!

Dan:

Well.... A little competition against the Dakota would be a good thing for us Dakota owners and those of us who may want to buy a new Dakota.

Personally, while i like the styling of the Chevy Colorado, it still isn't quite as big as the Dakota. The Dakota has a larger interior, and I imagine will still maintain a higher towing weight..... It is just a bigger truck than the colorado. Still, the MPG on that 8 in the chevy should be better than what Dodge offers.

I may have to take nother look at them again.

james Knigge:

The Canyon/Colorado 5.3 V-8, sounds like a winner. Will it be a Flex/fuel engine?
Can I get turn signal mirrors like my 2004 BUICK LeSabre has?

It also needs the "see thru Head Rest" on the rear seats (like Dodge Dakota Quad has), so when you look back to make a lane chg, you don't have a blind spot.

I want all the features that the big chevy truck has.

I would like to update my '85 Chevy S10 2.5 single cab to a Colorado/Canyon Crew Cab with a V-8, for more power. I like the size as well as the Data

matt shaffer:

why dont you make it a opption if you want more horsepower to where you could get the 5.7 make it the same one that in the 1500! That would make sents.

David Surgeoner:

u guys areall on crack lol
deisel is obviously more power and better mileage than gas and the inline 5 does have more power than even the 5.9 l dodge at the wheels. me and buddy tested this and the payload is pretty intense with 1500 pounds on the off road suspension
nice try though i use this truck to run a tree business and itt can even pull roots out of the ground
