According to recent reports by Edmunds and the Detroit News, the new Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks are not selling as well as the automaker projected. The automaker was hoping that the all-new trucks would speed their recovery, but that may not be the case.
The new trucks are taking longer to sell than the last versions. There are also fewer incentives on the new trucks.
GM sold approximately 200,505 trucks in the first quarter, which is far below expectations. Currently it is taking an average of 81 days to sell each truck compared to 55 days for the old model.
There could be many reasons for the dip in sales: gas prices, the housing market, design issues, etc.

That is good news to me. Most of the pickups I see are being used as comuter vehicles, carrying one person. The thing they do best is wasting precious unrenewable resources.
They only really make any sense if you have to haul stuff all the time.

I have a GM vehicle - the Tahoe. I am looking at buying a truck but why would I buy it when the Japanese vehicles all have 5 and 6 speed transmissions and tow more??!! And let me tell you about the quality issues I have with this thing... Never again....

this is no surprise. if americans keep thinking that patriotism will keep selling their shitty cars then there in for a rude awakening. Americans are fighting for oil in Iraq but in america their building gas guzzlers. Wake up and smell the shit on your knees! People don't want your GM shit. They want reliable economical vehicles with a reputation such as Toyota which I might add is the number one selling car in America. Don't spoon feed me this patriotic/traitor shit.. I'll spoon feed you $3.25 for a gallon of gas that lasts 10 miles. I wont pretend its all ok because we all know its not. I am a Toyota owner and I approve this message!

I agree with Bill Owens, Trucks and SUVs are NOT commuter vehicles. People always say "I don't want to get squished by a larger car"...well, if most people drove cars instead of 3 ton SUVs this wouldn't be an issue(like overseas).
To "POS_GM"....it's quite obvious you are extremely biased and narrow minded. All I hear from people like you is "If (any Asian car company) built a V8 it would be WAY better than the cheap American gas hogs....well...I hate to prove you wrong but Nissan's Titan gets very much the same gas mileage as a comparable Ford or GM. Open your mind just large enough to realize that ALL car makes have problems and ALL car makes will use the same amount of fuel when compared fairly.
Also...I love to state the fact that my 400HP, 4-door CTS-V gets THE SAME gas mileage as Honda's (Acura here) 2 door, Titanium bolted, 290 HP NSX.

Actually, my Nissan Titan makes a great commuter vehicle for around town. I'm a homeowner, and as such I need a truck. There's always something to haul: Garbage, lawn mowers, furniture, etc. I'm going to have a truck no matter what. My wife drives a Honda Accord Hybrid (31 MPG), so I also have a nice comfortable, safe, and efficient vehicle for long drives. So, how would I benefit from owning two cars and no truck? I wouldn't! But I drive the truck daily because my wife drives the Honda daily. Even at $4.00 if I were to drive 150 miles a day (that's 10 gallons per day at 15 MPG which is what my Titan averages), that's $40 per day. Now subtract the cost of gas for the Honda, we're at $20 per day is the premium I pay to have the truck. There are 20 work days on everage per month for a total of $400 per month. That's that same (or less) than the payment on another car, and let's not include insurance and maintenance!
People drive trucks because they make economic sense even if gas gets to $4 per gallon.

Wha? o_O
I guess me failed logics and maths. Possibly engrish too since I can't find enough info in that word problem to solve for X & Y.
Gah, my eyes gone stuck in cross-eyed ways.

@Meh
This is the problem with the world today. People don't bother to pay attention in Math class, can't solve a word problem for themselves, and then have to rely on a biased media to tell them how to feel about a situation instead of actually being able to think about it critically.

I didnt find the new gm truck improved that much over the older version plus it doesnt look as good. This is the tangible sign that the japanese is starting to overtake the america truck business.

I think it's hilarious.
Bill Owens makes the best point.
Payton Byrd: it requires a full size, V-8 equiped truck to haul some garbage and a lawnmower?
Posted by Noya | May 2, 2007 9:31 PM

I agree with Noya:
I drive a 1997 Chevrolet Blazer (unfortunately), it gets 20 mpg highway (unfortunately), and if I ever need to haul some crap away or tow a lawnmower, I just hook up a trailer, which myself and a few buddies split the cost of.
Point is that unless you work construction, or farm, or run a business that requires you to haul more than 5000 lbs daily, you do not need a full size pickup or SUV.
Hell, a Nissan Murano can tow more than 3000 lbs, same to a Suziki XL7, or my personal choice (if I could afford a new car) a 07 RAV4 from Toyota! All of these can easily handle your average lawn mower and some trash (provided the trailer). Now my Blazer can technically do 5000 pounds, these vehicles will tow 3000 lbs+, but that is more than adequate.
I mean, most people with large lawns, ones that can be from 1 acre to 4, get around on John Deere's that cannot weigh more than 1000 lbs, and the trailers can be roughly that weight. You are still ahead!
If you really need more, the GMC Acadia, the Chevrolet Colorado, the Honda Ridgleline and Pilot, the Saturn Outlook and the Volvo XC90 will all do more than 4000 pounds. Even 5000 pounds.
But unless you are building a house or towing a boat that is nearly yacht size (a quick survey of Bayliner's an Chaparral's most common offerings tells me most people do not buy boats weighing more than 5000 pounds), you still do not need the fullsize gas guzzler.

I had a 2001 Dodge Dakota with a back seat. I could not fit two car seats in the back as there literally wasn't enough leg room to put a child behind me as I'm over 6' tall. A full size four door truck is my only option. There's a lot more that goes into the selection of a vehicle than the size of the bed/trunk. Before I had kids we owned a 1984 Nissan Pickup! Life changes, you adapt. When you see people with a full size truck, more than likely they have a real reason to own a full size truck.
And yes, Virginia, vanity is a real reason just as much as the vanity to say "I'm Green! I drive a Prius!" I drive a Hybrid too, but I bought the one that will kick the crap out of any Mustang 5.0 out there.

It's too bad that the GM trucks aren't selling well. I agree with Bill Owens, a full size truck is not a good daily driver. A truck has its purposes, for me it's towing my boat. Right now I have a Dodge Ram with the 5.9L(I wish it was a HEMI), it gets 10MPG. Although its got a big engine, its weak in its design, inefficient, and body is too heavy. The power is sluggish and it can barely haul itself let alone tow a boat.
If I could buy a new truck, It would be the new Toyota Tundra with the 5.7L. For me, it's power/acceleration and I need lots of it. Diesels don't count, they got the power but no accel. The Tundra also has a six speed tranny and it runs the QTR in the 14s. For those of you who've been to the track, you know 14s is fast for a truck. For example, a stock 350z runs in the 14s.
Just because a truck states that it can tow up to 10,000, how it does it is totally different. My Ram can tow up to 8500, my boat with trailer is around 3500. But when you factor in air resistance and hills. It's a piece of crap. Don't even think of freeway acceleration, just let everyone pass and change lanes when you get an opening.
The only GM truck I'll consider is the SS. Or next year when they put the Caddy motor and new tranny in.

Your a Toyota owner and so am I. So, I can say my 05 Tundra DC gets no better real world driving mileage than the next full size. I average about 16.5 mpg driving conservatively on the highway. And, when I am pulling a trailer with it, I get 9-10mpg. The new Tundra, while they have a ton of power, they get even worse real world mileage. The good thing about them is they will run forever. But you can throw your MPG argument out the window.
As for quality, the latest lineup of Ford have been called the best initial build quality after Toyota. So, we have already spoken with our wallets.
I know it's hard, but try not to be a clown, I am sure your mom taught you better than this.

I believe that the U.S. auto makers are reaping what they have tried to sowed in our asses for the last 37 years...If the U.S. automakers is the reflection of our ability to produce a vehicle by the rule of thumb standards "create something that they will have to replace in 5 years so they can come back and buy from us again with our flashy commercials" you companies deserve what is happening to you now...Can you not see it? as the United States slowly drift into a semi 2nd world country, the EU will slowly take its place as the world leader. What? did you honestly believe that the U.S. was going to remain as the World's Leader? Come on people, you need to refer to the book of Revelations in the Bible. Yes we are living in THAT time, NOW...and we are just starting to see it shift over. Honestly people...if the Volkswagen bug in the 60s was a foot in the door into our market, do you not believe that they will do the same? Its a sad sign of the times when you see a Charger labelled "Made in Canada" The U.S. couldn't build a quality vehicle that is required to combat the other automakers, its just not in them to do so, and for the wrong reason, and thats where they have failed all of us.

lets see I own only american cars, all original 1991 d-150 w/ 250,000+ miles runs great, 1989 mustang 5.0 125,000 miles never a problem, I'll line up against any hybrid and blow their rice burnin doors off, 1993 dodge dakota V6 171,000 miles, 1997 taurus 160,000 miles, and a 2006 ram 1500 hemi 4,500 miles that gets 15 mpg beating the hell out of it, dont give me that crap that an american car doesnt last as long as asian crap, might I add all of them run great

You all that say there is no need to own a full size truck can kiss my 6'5 290 lb football injured ass. My size and back won't allow me to ride in a car without becoming stiff and being in a ton of pain. I am a professional and I have a 07 Ram 1500 Quad Cab and it is awesome. People should not stereotype and say that a full size truck is good for construction or towing only, it is also great for driving over curbs, medians, and small cars. I had a 02 F150 before and it drove and felt like junk compared to the Ram. I have also driven 06 F150s and they feel like tanks. I test drove a Titan and it felt similar to my Ram, just lower to the ground. I've never driven a Tundra or GM truck. Everyone just need to buy what they want and be happy with it. It is funny how Americans bitch about gas, shit in Europe they pay like $8-15 for a gallon of gas, why do you think the all ride scooters and those little ugly ass cars?

Those new Toyota full size pickup's look awful thirsty to me. Also, they are the ugliest truck on the road.
GM should have known that a pickup will not save the company.

Ive owned 5 different generations of honda accords, a 300zx and a 05 Titan, and an Xterra. Its safe to say that I havent put my trust into the domestic vehicles. That will probably change here soon. I just drove a Yukon Denali and for the retards that post on these boards I really feel for you. GM is building nice vehicles. The new Sierra is just as nice as my Titan. The interior(GM) is nicer, and I have the Titan LE. Back in the late 80s and 90's it was beyond a shadow of a doubt that american cars were inferior. this is not the case so much anymore. The accord and camary are just plain ugly. I think people just digest all the things they hear about american vehicles and dont do their own research. New caddys are sweet. GM Im proud that youre getting your act together. Japenese cars are just getting uglier and uglier by the minute. Oh and I just laugh at the Toyota truck every time I see it. Wow that thing is horrible looking. The one thing that is hurting the American car market is UAW. but thats another topic.

It is a very relible truck. My friend has a Gmc truck and its a 2007 and already had 5 diffrent troubles. No wonder Gm is going to the rotts of hell.

I am from London England and used to have to drive small cramped cars, because gas is over $8 bucks a gallon, and the British goverment kills you on taxes . But now i am living in the states and driving a 2006 gmc sierra. i could not be more happy. I dont care if gas goes up to $10 bucks a gallon . I am now a 110% american truck lover. If you want to drive a small eco car, please feel free to move to England. Cheers

Never figured out why pickups are so popular anyway- they are poorly made and overpriced gas hogs, unwieldy, handle terrible, terrible braking, deathtraps on wet or slick pavement, and the stuff you haul can easily get wet if you don't have a cap or ripped off if you have to stop for a bite to eat! Face it, people other than farmers and contractors buy them because they like the look. I'll stick with my G35 Coupe instead- it's fast, reliable, great handling, great braking, great looks, great comfort, every safety feature imaginable!
